We have been politely prasontad with a copy
of tha “ proeeadings of the R. W. Grand Lodge
of the State of Georgia, at its Annual Communi
cation, held in Saritmah, in May, 1847." From
these proceedings we are gratified to Iqarn that
ilia Order in Georgia ie in a highly flourishing
condition, growing in numbers and resources,
increasing in its capaciiios for doing good, and
extending the area of ite pli'lanihropio aclinu.
The report of the R. W. Grand Lodge of
Georgia, to the R. W. Grand Lodgo of the
United Staten for tha year, cotumcucing 1st
July, 1846, end ending 30th June, 1817, shows
lhnt, during that pertm!,' there li««*
383 initiations into the various lodges, 50 edmia-

aggregate of 45C. During the same period (here
have been 26 deaths, 5expulsions, end 81 sittpen

Duriog the time space of time there was ex
pended in the relief of suffering brothers, their
taiduws and orphans, Tor the education of ths
latter, mid for the burial of the dead, the aggregate
sum of $3,274 27. These reports eortaiuly show
that the Order in Georgia has reached a remark
able degreo of prosperity.

Is it possible we ere to hear nothing more front
Gan. Clinch's defenders, in reference to the note
ie alleged to have beeu given for Cep
itsl stock in the Beak of St. Mary’s? If this b«
an, the Whig candidate m iy well rue the day that
gnve birth to bis aspirations for the gubernationel
chair of Georgia. Whet ie the position of the
eaae! What the amount ol the defence! After
all the noise and bluster of the Geueral's friends,
in what does the caee materially differ from its
first statement to the public in Democratic, papers?
It was said that tha note was given for Capital
Stock in the 8t. Mary's Sink. Tha allegation
was proved by the pleee ofGon. Clinch’s attor
ney, as found npon record in a court of justice.
Have the facts of these pleas been denied 7 lias
Mr. Preston said that the note wee hot given for
Capital Stock I Where ie the witness, cognisant
of the facte of the case—who has been brought
forward to prove that the note was hot given for
Capital Stock in the Bank, as alledged in tho
plena? Is it not obvioua enough tlial, if inch was
tho trutli.it must be known to Mr. Preston, in all
probability, or if not to him, to ofiicors connected
with the St. Mnry’e Bank, or to " one of the weal-
lliiest gentlemen in Camden County,"v*ho en
dowed Gen. Clinch's note in 19.137 Why have
none of these gentlamcn stepped forward, 4o state
Unity and roundly to the public, Umt Uie pleas of
Mr. Proe'.on were based upon a gross and mani
fest error, cruelly unjuel to the character of his
ctiani ? If Gon. Clinch is himself too far eleva
ted above Uie people, to condescend to refuto from
his own lips, with bis own hand, iu his own prop
er person, a charge which implicates him in the
coinniisiiion of what his advoeates deem a “base
crime," at least some of Ida friends are expected
to step forward and do it for him. Why haa no
one beeu authorized to contradict tho injurious
report for him? Because the thing is ixroisiBLE I
Those who are host acquainted with the transac
tion ere also most familiar with Gen. Clinch's
fortunate conduct in the premises: They cannot
contradict the oharges. There ie no doubt that
they woold if they eould. Vain, therefore, ore the
noise and blueter aud indignant depreoation of
Whig presaoe, vein Mr. Preston's long letters, en
tirely vain all thase desultory efforts, when the
public only require a simple answer to a simple
question, by some one enlightened on the, subject
was or was not tho $10(JU note given for Capital
■took in the St. Mary's Oaokp
Was not the note of 183d simply a renewal
note ? Why har tho Republican dodged this
question likewise? Why ie Mr. Preston silent
upon It? Silence admits all that we desire—and
the public may rest assured, that the note of
$1600, dated in 1838, was a renewal of a note
boaring an enrlier date, HF oivbi* ron Csfitsl
■took in this St. Mart's Bank ! I jqj
If euch was not the consideration, it may well
be asked, how the consideration of tho note coaid
have failed? Every body knows that the busi-
ness of banks ie of such a character, that there ie
always a consideration of some kind for Uieir
notes. If Gen. Clinch had borrowed a thousand
dollare ( in 1838 from tbo bank the consideration
would have been good;—and the ota would nnev
•r hove gone into a lawyer’s hands al all. But
such was not Uie lictl Indeed it could oot have
been thefaet, because the Republican expressly
declares that in 1838, the bank of St. Marys could
not loin a dollar, even to the State of Georgia I
Never was a com more dearly made out in the
Court Room than is ibis charge of fraud against
Gen Clinoh. Ills fixed upon him, and more by
the acts of hi* own friends than of sny one else

Gon. Cushing arrived at Mutamoros on tho 3d
