1-* i» puNsihle that our opponents are claiming
cr '(Jit for Gen. Clinch on tho acoro of his possess,
ing Iho common feelings of humanity T The Re
publican of yesterday morning evidently strivee
to make political capi'nl nut nf a piece of charity
nn the p-irt of the General, which wan exhibited
by thousands throughout tho land ol both politi
cal parties. It ise well known fact that while the
Washington Union opposed tho Bill upon which-
the Republican has commented at large on c «•
stitHiional grounds, one of its Editors gave $500
(exactly five times as tnucItasGott Clinch) out
of his own private pocket for the relief of Iroland
and Scotland. Gentlemen in Georgia liberally
contributed in proportion to their mentis Among
others. Gov Troup gHVo fifty dollars to be np>
plied to tho same charitable purpose. Whittle
there extraordinary in the conductor Gen Clinchf
Our neighhnrs jnd ing of others hy themselves,
are disposed to think that tho General's oppo
nents will regard " this very net an one of selfish-
ness;'' and will urge “ that he made this donation
to secure ilm good offices of the Irish iu his favor
tn the coming election."
The onpniiotits of Gon. Clinch will u'o no #uch
thing. They‘o£noot sec that ho has any claims to
especial merit on the gtnuud of a simple sot of
charity~*ucli at was naturally expected from
a man rolling in avosIiIi and luxury~and
therefore, do not contend against them. They,
with all honest adopted cUiKetu, however, do per-
q**ive, and perceive with the contompt it deserves,
that Gen. Clinch's friends failing in all their efforts
to sustain their candidate, have finally setup this
claim, evidently hoping to gull some honest De
mocrat into voting for him. .This is no nnusuul
thing with this same Whig party! But this city
is full of intelligent Irishmen who know wel|
enough which parly is truly and at hoart favorably
disposed to the naturalized population, which
party in its principles and its policy has always giv
en to the foreigner as he lauds upon thoso western
shores, the warm grasp or fellowship, which party
has rejeoted with indigiiHlion tho Native American
spirit that so strongly tinctures Northern Whig*
gory; aud whioh party has been mostdisposod to
brCRtiiojiitoouruaturaltzation laws tho spirit of true
liberality and pure philanthropy. Every honest
Irishman must be at heart a Domocrnt. If he it
not, he timid be deceived by just such wrotched
efforts of a partisan preas, as tho ono wc have un
der con-idoration.
The Repuhficou claims that Gen. Clinch has "a
propor sympathy for Irishtnon dying of starva
tion." What m in, in this broad country, Whig or
Democrat has not iho same sympathy ? Aud how
angeuerous how unworthy of a respectable press,
is that malevolent spirit, which without the slight
est evidence to sustain it, proceeds to cast reflec
tions upon Mr. Towns. It enquires,
"And what did Mr. Towns? Did hnmalcn a
donation of ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS?
Did lie make art donation ? We should be glad
to know what Mr. Tuwua* did."
These questions ere asksd within four days of
the election! There ia a most remarkuble degree
of fairness in this'. As if in four days it were
possible, without the aid of a magnetic telegraph,
to ascertain the exact sum which l(lr. Towns con
tributed, out of his own pocket, towards the relief
of the friah* And, wi'hom an answer to thia
question, our neighbors come lo the conclusion,
that Mr. Towns is not sn.kiud in his feetinga to.
w.uds the Irish as Uen. Clinch, 'fisr may hare
come to aontesiich concluaion(wu think it highly
probable, from thoir wild system of ratiocination,
which, so fir Irora tracing nn effect to cause,
puts the effect first and the cause afterwards,)
but they err moat lamentably if they think they
can gu.i any honest, intelligent Irishman into any
melt belief.
Without pretending to asperse the motives of
G*u. Clinch, in mubing this donation, wo would
mer*ly say that hie charity, like his credit as a
b**ker, will probably suffer in the haud« of his
K*alous but bungling supporters. In the fiist place,
they paraded thia liberality of his in thoir partisan
columns, and now suppose, ns a muttor of course,
that Gen. Clinch's motive for giving the hundred
dollars will be questioned. They know more
nbout tho matter than we do, and nro probably
awuia of some sinister motive on tho part of tho
General in giving thia money whioh we would no t
huvo drnampt of.
The IiRtelfevre frotu Mexico,
The first accounts which we received by Express
from Mobile, of tho arrival of a merchant brig at

eentre of the eity without being exposed to tho

best in the world) could send havoc abroad from

Tho great and iVulrewittg doubt is at tn wheth

We drop the corn, because our neighbours! of

virtually admit, therefore, that tho General has

Once again to the augar caue! The difficulties
into which this discussion of Cliuoh's generosity
has involved our neighbors, seem to have upset
thoir reason, and, with the book before tlicoi. they
read exactly tho reverse of what is written there*
in. They evidently had Mr. Daweon’a Report

MACON, Saturday Morning, Sept. 25, 1817.
Dear Sir,—There is no disguising the fact,
that the Floyd House is decidodly one among the
best conducted hotels in tho Southern States.
Civility and politeness porvade the whole estab
lishment. Ask the landlord a question, and, in
stead of receiving a short and rough reply, with
his back turned towards yon, he in the most cour
teous m inner gives you all tbe information yon
desire. Ask'lho nsijfjtants for a sheet of paper, n
wafer, nr for any. thing, ami your rrqnest is
granted in a way which Inclines yon to the opin
ion, that they rogurd it as a pleasure to wait upon
you The servlints are obliging and prompt.
Your room u kept iu fine order, ond you enjoy
the grout luxury of sleeping wi hout being tor-
mooted by tiro bug,-, bats.&u. With tiro character
of Air. Ls'nier’s table, yon, with many othors, are
familiar. It is useless, therefore, for me to e&y
any tiling more than thia; that it is all which one
can wish fur. Judging from the activity of tiro
merchants, I should infer that they anticipate
doing much business this season. The stock of
goods is vory heavy. Mscon is improving, I learn,
in evury respect, and I hope it will coutinuo to
