to extend to him that encouragement nnd confi

documents as this, and by a liberal patronage of
Ihe press, Hint the business ofn pi ire is extended

Tfao Result of the ’Election.
Exulting over tno fact that the next Legislature
will be Whig by a annll majority, the Republican
proclaims that it is a “victory worth having” bo-
cause “ It gives us two United States Seuator*, a
Judge of the SnpredtH Court of Errors fbr sTx
years, three or four Judges of Superior Courts,
Solicitor Generals, State Officer*, &c. Arc., and,
ehovo ell, it injures to tho State of Georgia a con
tinuance of that Whig policy under which she has
prospered so abundantly."
This is a fair specimen of how our opponcnle
smack thuir lips at the thought of the ioavea and
fifthessn soon to bo distributed among them. ,It
m difficult, however, to reconcile the arguments
so strenuously urged for tho elccti in of Clinch,
the fulsome laudation so lavishly bestowed npon
Craw ford, the abuse so abundantly heaped upon
McDonald for lib financial policy, though barked
by Whig Legiskmtrev, with the “oLmcoTpart of
the foregoing sentence. It etrikes ua os beiug
ftich time to drop this ridiouinu* humbug.
Our neighbours display better tasto in not de
claring the State opposed to Mr.-Polk's adminis
tration, than is usual with Whigs upon similar oc
casions. It is highly creditable to them that they
have not pretended to discover some plausible
pretext for saying that while Mr. Towns has been
electod Governor, the mnjtirity of voters in Geor*
gia are opposed to the present Administration.—
Although unfortunately, through local causes, di
visions in our party, ind.ipondent candidate*, etc.
•te., we have lost the Legislature, yet are we
chnereJ by tbe reflection ill it Georgia Isa Demo
cratic 8tato. that she has raised her voice for the
enuse of the country, and that although, beyond
all question, two Federal Senators will bo fasten
ed upon her, they will not .represent the views
and feelings of a majority of her people. Geor
gia is Democratic now ; how much more Demo
cratic must she bi ere another year shall have
rolled away!' Let tho spirit of the party bo a*
roused by tbe reflection that onco again,in defiance
of the expression of the popular tviih, two Whig
Senators, who repudiate the republican jloctriue
of instruction, who advocate to its full extent the
principle of protection,, who plant themselves
upon the ground or “no more territory,” who
sieteruatically struggle, on every important ques
tion, against the principle of State Rights, who
swell “the hue and cry” of the opponents of every
step liken by tbe administration in the present
war, and proffor hope and encouragement tu tho
iiifurlah-d foe with whom we contend, nnd our
word for it tho Domocrutio majority iu iIn Stato
will be quadrupled.
The election of George W. Towns must be
hailed by every Democrat with an emotion of un-
ininglud dulight. We recur with pleasure to an
expression which we used in*tho eorly part of the
campaign. It w^s called out by one of those
permnal attacks which hive boon so unscrupu
lously snd mule*oleutly made npon him. “At it
was reserved" said the Republican "for the Bal
timore Convention to unearth a Folk, so was it
lift to the Democratic Convention in this State to
blaze out with this light so long hidden under a
bushel,” West once adopted the greater pan
of the idea and the prestige it conveyed! ' And
as the peolde of the Unfed States elected Air.
Polk, and as Air. Folk has mode s must admirable
President, so will the people of Georgia elect Mr.
I'uwuv, and Afr. Towns will in ike a most excel
lent Governor.
There is a strong similarity between the esses.
Mr. Polk was not brought forward be'bre the
country because lie had glittered in the regimentals
ofa general, or had set the world on fire by the
magnificence of hie declamation, or the might of
his invective, lie was brought forward as an un
ostentatious Djkmociut; simple in bis mnnneta.
unpretending iu his ch meter, not pufied up into
couseqnance by overweening adulation, but of
■•erling integrity, round judgment, an intellcot of
high order, a decis ve character, but above all, or
PURE, UNDOUBTED REPUBLICAN PRINCIPLE. The
saute is the case with Mr. Towns; end although,ns
a matter of course, our opponents will continue to
deny the fuCt,yctTUEY know it is true.”
Mr. Towns, nominated by the Democratic Con
tention, is now the Governor of Georg in, aud the
best refutation of tha unmitigated slanders with
