In pursuance to notice, books have been opened on the
20th Instant, for the purpose of recelvlngsubsorlptlons to*
tho capital stock of the Alabama and Florida Railroad,
(Montgomery and Pensacola Road.) and we are glad to state
that our eltlsens seem very sealous snd interested in this
matter. Private subscriptions, on yesterday, (the first day
only,) amount to a pretty good sum. There is no doubt

Tho Baltimore American, of tho 23d Instant, says:
Tho British Government bos made a very creditable
and liberal acknowledgment to Captain Nye. of tho
United States mail steamer- Pacific, for rescuing the
BSongcB and crow of tho British bark Jesse Stevens
m Impending destruction during a-vlolent gale at
sea. In consideration of the humane services per
formed on that occasion, the Washington Republic
states that the British Government has just sent to
that city, as presents, a cold medallion likeness of
Qudcn Victoria, with suitable inscriptions, and a gold
pocket ebrohometer, for Captain Nye, ten pound ster
ling and a gold mounted telescope for tho third mate,
and to each of the six sailors who volunteered to man
the life-boats, ton pounds sterling. These evidences
of royal gratitude will, it is presumed, bo distributed
according to custom, by tho British Minister, through
tbo medium of the Btato Department.
Mazzini and Baffi.—Anrelio Saffl, the gallant
friend of Mazzini, has arrivod safely In England, after
passing through the ranks of his deadliest enemies.
Mazzini was in perfect safety on the lost advices from
Italy, notwithstanding the Increasing vigilance of tho
Austrian police ; so says the London Morning Ad
vertiser, which adds that he may ba expected in En
gland In about a fortnight. There is one true spirit
at least who will labor in the cause of freedom while
Muzzini lives.—N. Y. l)em.
William Russell, of Deerfield, Mass., who died on
the 10th Inst., at tho advanced age of 02 years, had
his cofiln made years ago. and stored It In his house,
and would occasionally lie dowu lu it to see how It
fitted 1dm. He lmd a metalic sarcophagus prepared
to receive his cofilncd remains, und left Instructions
to have his funeral private, and all tho attendants
upon tho occasion were invited as formally as they
would have been to a wedding or a party.
It is afilrmed that a remarkable change is In pro
gress among the Jews in every country owing to a
manuscript being largely clrc dated by an influential
Rabbi, proving from Scripture that the time ha3 como

manuscript has been formed to further tho movement
proposed by tho learned Rabbi.
John Anderson, colored, convicted of kidnapping
John McKinney from Maytown, Pa., was sentenced

costs of prosecution, and undergo solitary confine
ment in the county prison, at hard labor, fornino

The resolution before tho Legislature, for a final
adjournment on the 2d of May, bos been passed by

Fifty thousand bushels of onions were raised last
year, in the vicinity of Westport, Ct., within a tract
of country not exceeding thirty square miles. Tho
Average yield per acre, was about 600 bushels.
