The Chicago papers contain heart-rendering de

father, mother and brother, shrieking like a maniac.
Three children from eight to ten years of ago were

Tho scene at the depot was awful in the eAtromo

The rumor that Chief Justice Taney intends resign
ing his seat in the Supremo Court is denied in Balti
more. He lias recovered from his lato sickness, nnd
has resumed the disclmrgo of his duties in the Circuit
Court.
Late accounts from Newfoundland, state that tho
ccul-fishery had been the most successful known for
many years. Already 650,000 seals had been ob
tained.
A new harbor on tho ocean, south of Port (Mod nnd
Rouge river In Oregon, has been found to lie feasible,
and is called Paragon Buy, and a city is Bpringing up
there called Crescent city.
Aiu’kst for Detaining the U. 8. Mails—Some
sugar boilers who were 6n a strike on Wednesday
last, while marching through Hudson street, instead
of giving way to the cars with the mails, obstructed
them. Mr. Peck, tho conductor, drew a pistol aud
fired at them wounding ono of their number. Mr.
Peck immediately gave himself ujf to the authorities,
but he was immediately discharged. Yesterday some
of the men engaged in tlto disturbance went to the
Police office to lodge u complaint against the conduc
tor, mid unsuspiciously giving their names, they were
arrested for stopping tbo mails. Their names aro
Thomas MonoLan, James Brady, Anthony Trust and
William Mountain. The man who was shot was
named Barnard Mooney, in the employ of Messrs.
Harris, Evans k Co., Sugar Refiners, No. 28 Leonard
street. It is to be hoped that this will be a lesson to
the usual violence which characterizes the proceed
ings of these " strikers," while parading tho streets.

pushing his pretensions partly and strongly upon
tho ground of his Bentonfsm. They are for making
the re election of Benton to tho United States Senate
in ’54, ono of tho great issues for tbo Democratic
party. .

'• In the State of Ohio there resided a family con
sisting of at) old man by tho name of Beaver and his
