The Gardiner oase was resumed in Washington, on
the morning of the 4th. The court had been engaged
all day in an argument as to the admissibility of a
series of letters purporting to havo been written by
J. 0. Gardiner, and first to oontrodlot the witness,
and secondly on the ground of his being an accom
plice. The argument on tho same point was oontln-
, Bed on the 5th, with a prospect of a long continu
ance, whereupon the jury were dismissed until tho
6th.
The hands on board the steamer Osprey struck in
Philadelphia, on the 4th, for higher wages, but a
new set were Immediately shipped. Tho old bauds,
with other sailors, threatened violence; but-a strong
detachment of police attended- and prevented a dis
turbance. The steamer sailed lor Charleston at the
usual hour.
The Massachusetts Constitutional Convention as
sembled in Boston on tho 4th. Tho Whigs nomlna-

tion the Hon. 0. P. Banks.
Philip Allen, Democrat, was elected United States
Senator for Rhode Island, on the 4th, without opposi

bishop Mosquera, of Bogota, was presonted with a

Mechanics' Mhetino.—A large and respectable
assemblage of the Journeymen mechanics of this city
took place in tho Exchange, on Saturday evening,
having for its object, as wo understand, to place tho
Interests of labor In a more proper relative position
to capital, by forming a Mechanics' Association; for
which purpose a committee o( twelve was appointed
to report a constitution and by-laws at a subsequent
meeting. Not having been‘furnished with the pro
ceedings for publication, we have but a slight idea of
what passed.

The National Finances*—A Washington despatch
to tho New York Courier says— . _ .
Tho revenue recoipts from Boston, New York, Bal
timore, Philadelphia and Now Orleans for the mouth
of March, was five millions seven hundred nnd sixty-
six thousand doilara; for April four millions four
hundred and ninety-two thousand dollars; total for
two months, ten million ouo hundred nnd fifty-eight
thousand dollars, making nn increaso, from tho year
1862, of two million four hundred and ninety thou
sand dollars, which is at tho rate of thirty-three per
cont. Tho revenues of tho year from all sources will
exceed Bixty millions of dollars.
Tub Chicago Collision.—Moses M. Tyler and
Thomas Rockham, the conductor and engineer of tho
Michigan Central 'Railroad, have been admitted to
boil in the sum of $2000 each, upon a writ of habeas
corpus. Mr. Whiting, tho conductor, and Mr. Davis,
tho engineer, and the fireman of the Michigan South
ern train have also been nuraltted to ball by Judgo
Wilson in the sum of $2000 each. Each of the per
sons were also put under bonds of $200 to apnear ns
witnesses in tho judicial investigations to benercaf-
tor instituted.
A Washington letter to the New York Courier and
Enquirer says: The Attorney General haa recently
had before him a question of some im;»ovtance to the
Navy. Commodores Morris, Shubrick. nnd Skinnor,
nnd Commodore Dupont, were constituted a Board or ’
Commission, to revise the rules and regulations of the
Navy. They reported a codo containing some new
things, and dispensing with some others not new,
which excited complaint on tho part of many officers.
It is stated that this codo was signed by the Presi
dent and Secretary of tho Navy, in the last hours oi
the lato adminUtration, without being maturely con
sidered, and was promulgated to somo of the squad
rons in scrvico on the 3d March. The new Secretary
of tho Navy suspended its operation, and referred tho
K sstlon of Us legality to tho Attorney General.—

tho new code will therefore bo suppressed. The rules
and regulations will remain as before.
Tho frigate Congress, and sloop-of-war Jamestown,
aro soon expected homo from tho Brazil station, and

gate Savannah will relieve tne Congress. Commo
dore Salters will take command of the squadron.

A largo number of tho citizens or Marion County,
assembled at the Court House, in Ocala, on Wedcea-
day, tho 27th of April, to consider tho subject of a
Railroad across tho Peninsula of Florida, tho said
Railroad to commence in East Florida, upon somo
tributary of tho Atlantic ocean, within tho limits of
tho State or Florida, having n sufficient outlet to the
ocean to admit of the passago of sea steamon, and
to run through tho Eastern uiftl Southern pnrt of the
State, in tho most eligible direction to somo tributary
of tho Gulf of Mexico in South Florida, south of the
Suwsnnco River, having a sufficient outlet for sea
b teamen.
Tho meeting was organized by Major L. C. Gaines
being called to tho Chair, and John 0. Reardon as
Secretary.
Tho chairman in a brief manner, stated the object
of the meeting, when, on motion, a committee of

heartily concur in the action of Hernando and Hillsborough
counties upon tho subjoct of constructing a railroad across
tho Peninsula of Florida—connecting tho Atlantlo with tho
Gulf, and calling a convention of East and South Florida, to
assemblo at Ocala, on the first day of July next, for the pur
pose of uniting the interests. Influence*, and means, of these
sections as a course best calculated to promote liarmony
unity of action, whoreby ways and moans may be secured

Marlon, cordially Invite the counties in East and South

Melancholy Accident*
We regret to learn that Mr. Thomas Falnkner, of
this county, camo to his death on Tuesday last, in a
very distressing manner. It appears that in compa
ny with somo other persons, ho was about crossing
Flint River, somo seven or eight miles below Albany.
As they wero about leaving tbo shore, he took ids
gnu by tho mnzzie and endeavored to shove tho bat-
tcau off. Tho gun slipped and tho hammer struck
the boat with forco sufficient to oxplodo the cap.—
Tho^ntire chargo. consisting of buck shot, ontorod
his side, killing him instantly. Somo of the shot
passed entirely through his body, and lodged in his
arm.

Explosion of Gas—Remarkable Escape.
Wo learn that an accident, which camo very near
proving quite seriotis, occurred at the house of Henry
Atkins, Esq., No. 10 Bedford street, last ovebing—
Tho gas fixtures inau ante-room connected with tho
parlor bad been repaired daring the day, and had
been loft so that the g«3 escaped freelv. About dusk
a son of Mr. Atkiqn entered tho room from the parlor,
with a lighted lamp, and instantly the gas exploded,
causing a most frightful sceuo of destruction and ter
ror. Most of the glass in tho parlor windows was
blown ont, one of tho heavy parlor doors was broken,
and the drapery of tho room instantly set on fire. The
S maii who carried the lamp was scorched, and a
ter of Mr. Atkins somowhat burned about the
head, hut, most fortunately, no sorious injury was
sustained by eithor. The fire communicated to tbo
drapery was put out in a little while, and what
threatened to be a conflagration was happily avoided.
The premises show a sad scene ofhavoo, audit is real
ly remarkable that a more sorious result was not pro
