passod Speers’ Mill, tho water was up to the mill’s

We shall expect to hear of heavy losses on tho Gnir.
Wo havo just learned thrt the officers and crew of
tho Dtnnistmcn were providentially saved by a small
schooner that happened to be near by, and which
sent a yawl boat to their relief, just in time to prevent
them from all being lost. The vessel is a total wreck,
having been capsixed, and being mostly under water.
We now learn that this unfortunate vessel was con
signed to Mr. St. Cyr, by whom she was chartered to
take a freight of cotton to Europe. Mr. St. Cyr’a los
ses have been very great.
Wo notice that the storm was also felt at Indianola
and Lavaca, where it did considerable damage. The
Indianola Bulletin, of the 3d inat., says:
We had quite a storm yesterday afternoon, accom
panied by rain. The bay was lashed Into a roaring
fury. Tne wind from the northwest blew the lighter,
G. B. Innes, with 120 bales cotton, and the sloop Re
lief, with government stores, into the government
wharf, where they filled, and it is thought both nra
very materially injured. Several other small crafts
were driven ashore but received no serious injury—-
The steamship Perseverance, lying at Powder Horn,
and tho brig Virginia, in the pocket, rode out the
storm in handsome style.
At Lavaca, the new house of Dr. Nichols was blown
down, breaking tho legs of a deranged man. The
sloon Fashion was wrecked.
Tfio Lavaca Commercial, of the 30th nit., says:
Tho late dlscovorv of gold on the Colorado river,
near Hamilton's valley, lias already created qulto a
stir among tho people. There are now from threo to
four hundred persons at work in tho roiues, and we
learn that they ore averaging from five to ten dollars
per day each, and somo few of them have already
succeeded in gathering as much as fifteen hundred or
two thousand dollars worth of gold. Tho tide of emi
gration has already turned its course in that direc
tion, and a largo number of persons nro daily pouring
into tho mines in soarch of tne precious dust.
Tho Lavaca Commercial, of tuo 30th alt., in notic
ing tho business, healthy location and improvements
of that place, says:
We shipped fast year approaching nine thousand
bales cotton. Up to this date wo have nearly doubled
tho shipments of last year, and aa great quantities or
cotton are still in tho interior, our most experienced
merchants estimate onr cotton trade for this year at
twenty thousand bales at least. From tho vast im
migration coming into our country, it is said tbut
Lavaca will ship next year three times the amount
of this year. Tho goods forwarded through tills
place to the interior largely exceed one thousand bar

The Advertising Business.
Tn looking over onr list of <a Exchanges ” (which Is
probably tho longest in the country, havo been con
stantly increasing for a quarter of a century, In spite
of our efforts to crop it down) we having been struck
with the large amount of New York advertisements
contained in the columns of country newspapers—-
We notice the most of these columns are headed thus:
“ From Wm. H. McDonald's Advertising House, 102
Nassau-street, New York.” Wo also find in these
columns tho business cards of our most enterprising
and successful mercantile houses. From which facts
we infer two things, vizthat our neighbor McDon
ald is doing an immense advertising business, and
that our shrewdest and most prosperous business men
know the value of extensive advertising. It is, in
fact, tho only secret of success. True, other things
dro necessaiy. The merchant must havo the right
sort of goods ; he must sell at fair prices, and do busi
ness ou high and houorable principles to miccced in
the long run. But advertising is the sine qua non of
success. Bo much for what concerns newspapers and
merchants. A word for McDonald.
We find In tho Springfield Republican, of April
30th, an article reflecting somewhat severely upon
the Now York Tribune, for its endeavors to push the
claims of a rival Advertising Agent in this city at
the expense or injury of McDonald. We noticed this
unfair attempt at the time, and expressed our sur
prise that] the Tribune should insist that one of its
own tenants and agents should havo tho preference
in this advertising business over other good men. In
jnstico to Mr. McDonald and others in tho same line
of business, wetjiink the true state of tho case should
bo understood by the public. Frco trade, a fair field,
and no favor, ia the honest motto for all kinds of busi
ness.
We understand that Mr. McDonald is advertising
in nearly six hundred different newspapers, to which
ho will probably pay an aggregate sum this year of
id Tho ~ - 1
over One Hundred
Preserved Merits.
A correspondent of the Portland Advertiser states
that a process has been perfected In that city, by
which at merely a nominal cost, beef, mutton, veal,
poultry, Ac., can bo prepared and preserved perfectly
rresh, during a voyage to the East Indies and back,
the meat retaining its jnices, and being in all re
spects equal if not superior, to that just butchered.
It is an “ hermetically Bealod ” process, without
cutting tho meat into shreds and changing its charac
ter, or using tin canisters, which involve an enormous
expense. A roasting piece, of beef, or loin of veal,
of ten pounds weight, for example fe mado to yield
the water from its surface to the depth of one tenth
of an inch, which by a chemical process, an artificial
article, completely Impervious to air, fe soon formed,
and tins most effectually excludes the atmospheric
oxygen from the Interior. Tho meat, thus prepared,
is then packed In bran, in flour barrels, and will keep
in any climate, for any reasonable length of time, say
one or two years. Two cents a pound it is supposed
will on a large scale, cover the operation, so that pas
sengers to Australia can now bo provided every day
with real roast beef about as cheaply os they can bo
kept on salt provisions.
Singular Death,
Ou Thursday tho 27th April, a man apparently be
tween 25 and 30 years of ago,and whoso manner gave
evidence of mental derangement, wont bare footed to
tho residence of Mr. Bargo, in Fayette county, a*kod

came on in pursuit or him. The deranged roan was
seen by several of the neighbors, at different times be
tween that day and the following Saturday, but as he
was rambling through the woods with no particular
course or place iu view, bis pursuer did not succeed

have no disposition to dispute the palm wit!) our

placed in our hands three eggs, which weigh a little
over ton ounces. The largest one weighs very nearly
a quarter of a pound, 1b six aud three-eights indies
in circumference, and soven and a half over tho butt

were laid by an ordinary sized hen, and that ho nas

Hfe son was nhead. In a similar position, and a colt

* ; And by the river, upon the bank thereof shall grow all

of shall be for meat and tho leaf thereof for medicine.”
H ERE was hope for the sick recorded long ago. and eve

promises Khali not fail.
As medical arlonce discovers and designates the remedies
nature lias given, one by ono. the diseases that afflict our
race yield to the control of art. Of all tho maladies we
suffer from, nono has carried more victims to an untimely
grave than Consumption of the Lung*. Subjoined we give
soino evidence that this too may be cured, and that pulmo

Albany, N. Y., April 17,1848.
Dr. Ayer, taiwell—Dear Blr: I have for years been afflict

At first It seemed to make me worse; but In less than a
