There was cousiderable excitement in Jersey City
yesterday,and at Bergen Corners, on account oftlie
strange disappearance ofn young lady on Thursday
night, under circumstances which induce her friends
ti k-lii-vu that she was forcibly abducted. Her name
is Emily Teal. Site resided at Bergen Five Corners,
one and a half miles from the Jersey City ferry. The
young lady went out into thc yard while’ her brothers
were sitting in the house. She bad on a sun-bonuet,
and a visette thrown over her shoulders; uud was
dressed in her night clothes. Not returning in the
course of fifteen minutes her brothers went out to
look for her and could not find ln-r. They found her
visette under tlm arbor in thc garden. Tlio neighbors
were aroused, mid a search instituted, which, up to
last evening, hail been unsuccessful. Notice was giv
en to the police of Jersey City, Hoboken, Newark anil
New York ; the neighborhood in the vicinity of her
redduueo has been searched, uud ell the adjacents
li'dds examined, without a trace of her. Her family
is in great distress, and her sister is derunged on ac
count iff this occurrence. The young lady is highly
respectable, educated, retired in disposition, anil bus
kept no company. It is impossible lor her friends lo
conjecture her fate, or suspect any person of the out
rage. .She is about 23 years of age, about 5 feet ft
inches high, rather slender in form, has dark hair nnd

Conviction of Stevens.—Some months since, we

Stevens and Stewart, of Florida, which terminated
in tlio deatli of the latter. The Jacksonville Repub
lican of last Thursday says: Thc trial of Stephens
for tlio murder of young Stewart, of Alachua county,
came off nt Ncwmuisville, last week, before Ilis Hon
or Judge Forward, and resulted iu tlie conviction of
mmislaughter. He was sentenced to six mouths im
prisonment aud to pay n fine of fivo hundred dollars.
Messrs. Sanders, Peden and Call, conducted tho pros
ecution, and Mr. Whit Smith, of Columbia county,
mid J. W. Owens, of Savannah, the defence.
Pacific Exploring Expedition—The Baltimore
■ American says; It is supposed that Commodore
Ringgold's squadron will no ready for departure by
tlio 20th instant. There is still a scarcity of men. but
it is believed that a complement will be secured in
time. The diminished supply caused an increase in
the compensation of seamen under thc late Secretary
pf the Navy, us follows; Wages of regular seamen,
increased from $12 per month to $13,00; ordinary
seamen, from $10 to $11; boys, from $8 to $8,90.
Shooting Afpair.—On Friday evening last an
affray occurred between W. lb Wurtheu, of this coun
ty, and Everett H. Kinchen, of Laurens county, at
this place, in which the former was Rhot with a pis
tol, the shot taking effort in the Jourer part of the ab
domen. Mr. Wart hen we learri Is recovering, and
Kinchen was brought before Ju*l!co Haines yesterday,
nnd tlm case continued till to-day, in consequence of
tbo absence fff witnesses. Both parties were intoxi
cated at tlie time—Sandersvitle Georgian, llth inst.
Execution-—Thomas Atchison, a native of Edin-
burg, Scotland, fifty-one years of age, and a houso
painter by trade, was executed at North Hempstead,
Queens county. Long Island, on the lath, for tbo mur
der iff Ralph Yoorhies, a farmer, sixty yean of age,
who lived at Plainridge, In tho same country. This is
tlio only execution that has taken placo in Queens
county since 1807.

Railroad, to Belair, to spend the day in recreation and

mans, wounding threo of the party, two in tho head
and one In the ear, and made his escape. Tho wounds,
