The lntly who lias figured before the public ho large ly in connexion with the Emperor of tue French, is Mrs. Knto Howard, the actress at the Adolphia Thea tre. She never was in the United States, but was the daughter uf a baker and pastry-cook In Drury Lane, London. Some years since, Miss Howard married an attorney’s clerk, named Gurley, from whom she sep arated in a few months. Louis Napoleon saw her on the stage and becamo enamored of her, hence the connexion between them. Tho young lady to whom the false paragraph going the rouuils lu the American papers attache* tho scan dal, was tho daughter of an honorable and respected Canadian gentleman bolding an official appointment in the United States, and married to utj American Indy connected with three of tho most Illustrious of the British nobility. The daughter, now deceased, was married to the son nt u noble duke, nnd every slur upon her character, and every word relating to her except that she had separated from her husband, is entirely false. She died puro in name and reputa tion, scarcely turned seventeen years—young enough to have been Mr*. Howard’s daughter.—Kingston (Canada) News. Our Nominee for Governor. Tho nomination of John Anthony Winston lias been responded to with singular unanimity bv the Democratic press of the State. Not an AJabama Democratic paper has reached us yet hut has hoi*tcd his name and given a sure pledgo of efficient aid to place him in the Gubernatorial Chair. Tho late State Convention only ratified the selection indicated by public sentiment among the masses of the Democra cy previous to Its meeting. And now the signs of his triumphant election nro equally palpable. This prospect of harmonious action throughout tho can vass is certainly cheering; and we are confident that our candidate will prove himself, worthy of it, by meeting out impartial justice to every portion of the State, unbiassed by section pride or prejudice.—Jl/ouf- gomert/ Ala., Advertiser. Mr. II. Mnrcrnff, of our city, accompanied by a few friends, was on a fishing excursion a mile of so be yond our bar yesterduy, when the party received a most unexpected ••bite,” and|mndo an unexpected haul. This was nothing more nor less than a large turtle, of tho kind commonly known a,* tho tortoise . shell turtle, which getting foul of a rope attached to the boat, was finally secured after some trouble nnd exertion. Hi* turtlesliip bad been seen there several times, (iws we learn)' by our pilots and fishermen for two years past, and many endeavor* have been made to catch him, but bo has played shy and escaped hitherto. Being two largo for tho fishing boat of his captors, he was secured to a targe tialuug Rmack, which will tow him in this morning.—Chat. Courier. The Superior Court for the county of Spalding commenced its session in this place on last Monday, ills honor Judge Stark presiding. Judge Crittenden was chosen foreman of tho Grand Jury. The general charge by his honor to this body ut the opening of tho Court was highly Interesting, particularly tlmt I iortlon relating to tho education of the poor. Mklanciioi.y Aocidknt.—It becomes our painful duty to record the death of a very worthy laboring man in this community, Mr. Dauicl Nicholson, who lost his lire by an accident on Monday morning last. It appear* that he and another workman were carry ing a heavy piece of timber on their shoulder*, on reverse sides, and when about to disburden themselves of it Mr. Nicholson attempted to tiirow his end of the timber over hi* head, but falling the log lodged on him, crushed him to the earth, tell upon his head, and broke in his skull.
