General News—-Therejs at this time, says the Austin Gnsrttc of tho 4th ipst., and has been fora week or two past, a good fcal of sickness in this city and vicinity. The nruvnillig disease is called by the physicians “ acute dysenteiW' running, in some ca ses, into typhoid fever. f » The South Western Amvicnn, speaking of tbe de parture of Gen. Clark, Ex-Governor Paine and com- E for Fort Graham, on their railroad exploring says : Up to this city the gentleman express ed themselves well pleased with Texas—saw few ob stacles to overcome in the erection of a road, in tho general features of tho country. Wo are glad to learn, ears the Houston Telegraph, that tho Government is determined to sustain Gover nor Lane In the position lit has assumed in regard to the Mesilla Territory. Several companies of troops have been ordered to New Mexico, aud the move ments on the frontier indicate that a military force will soon bo concentrated near El Paso, that will ena- blo our citizens to take quiet possession of tbe territo ry in dispute. From the Gold Mines.—We fine in tho Galveston News of tho 10th. the following in relation to the so- called Texas gold mines : Mr. J. Howard and Dr. Thornton, of this city.ro! turned yesterday morning .from Hamilton’s Vulley, whither thoy travelled iascarch or the "gold mines,” and to view tho country. Mr. H. informs us that tho party to which he was attached spent about seven days in the neighborhood of tho Sandies, and all that thoy had been uolo to discover, after repeatedly wash ing panfuils of earth, was a few minute particles of gold, so small that a hundred of them would not bo worth live cents. He is thoroughly satisfied that goldis not to bo fouud in sufficient quantity to nay half a dollar a day. In tiie same neighborhood is some old Spanish or Mexlnan silver mines, but they aro not rich. Mr. Howard’s statement is entitled to tho utmost confidence, and wc call the attention of thoso papers to it that have given circulation to tho exaggerated rumors of tho richness of the mines. The Crops—From our exchanges we clip the fol- wing in relation to the present growing crops : Col. Wallace, on the Cibolo, has one hundred acres corn in tassel. • -.taMy acres in not bo *uniassod in mu 111 auj jivitiuu ui u-aiu. The Bastrop Advertiser, of the 4th inst.. says rain needed very much. Vegetation Is chocked and parched. Farmers say no corn will be mado uhless they get rain soon. Mr. Wicks, on the Cibolo, has two hundred acres in cotton. It is now in the bole, some two months ahead of Mississippi or Louisiana in cotton, A letter dated from Cane, Liberty county, on tho 2d inst., informs the Galveston News that tho crops in that neighborhood are excellent—corn iu silk and tassel ; cotton blooming, and sugar cano five to six toot high. T' tt Austin Gazette learns from a gontlomnn of oIV Qpunty, who was in that city a few days since, iatSi-% prospect for abundant crops in that county is by no means flattering. The spring was backward and wet, and the crops aro not ho forward as they are west of the Brazos. The Gonzales A’lKyuiVrriwyB 1 Notwithstanding tho extreme backwardness of tho spring, we leern from several of our planters that both the cotton and corn crops generally of this county are in a nourishing condition. Most of the corn is iu silk and tassel. A gentleman from Titus county, visiting Austin, informs the Gazette that tbe crops in Titus and sur rounding counties, although somewhat backward, promises a full yield, if favored with seasonable rains; nnd between that region nnd Austin they generally look well. The health of the country cust of tho Bra zos js vory good.—TV. O. Crescent, 10th. Rain.—We have at last been visited by something like a settled rain. It commenced yesterday from tho south-east, whilo all tho appearance oi a sedate and protracted spoil, such ns we are frequently visited by at this peculiar period of tbo year. We look for more cheering news of tbo crons in future, from the plant ers in our vicinity, and it wo are not much mistaken, may date from tho present, a cessation of the late dis tressing drought by which wo have so long been visi ted.—C'/uta. Standard, 21af. ..... Jr pant Hghtful showers falling, with prospects of more of tbe same sort. 80 far, it is the best rain wo havo bad at this place since tho 26th day of March. Wo iiopo it has extended through tho country.—Sandersville Georgian, 21st. Prevention Better than Cork.—A physician of our acquaintance prescribes the following: Remedy against the evils of hot weather.—A. diet composed mostly of vegetables and fruits, in moder ate quantities, cold but not ice water. Sufficient ex- erciso in tho open air to excite a free perspiration—- Avoid darkened rooms, solar light being os essential to animals os vegetables.
