It may not ba generally known among oar dletant
readers that the office in which Genoral Jackaon read
law In this town Is atlll, standing. It is a small frame
building, and seems to have beeuonco painted red ;
but Its coloh at present would be hard to de9cribo.—
The band of time U visible upon it. We visited it a
fow days ago ; It stands upon the lot of Nathaniel
Boyden, Esq., and in front or his elegant dwelling,—
A stranger would wonder that it was permitted to
remain a decaying and unslgbtlngly structure in the
midst or taste ana elegance 5 but there are associa
tions connected with it—be it said to the honor of the
propritor—that preserve it from the ruthless hand ot
R es. Its former teuant, after a career among
>st brilliant la the annals of history, now muul*
dors in tho grave, leaving behind hitn a name as last

he went forth, rising step by step, encircling bis brow
with fresh laurels, and extending the circio of his

Singularly Tragic
Silay of last week a moat tragic incident
On Wednesday of last weei
occurred on tho Central lteilroad at Tyrone Station,
In tills county, the particulars Of which are about as
followsAn Irishman whose name we have not
learned, and who had been employed about tho road
there for some time past, was awaiting tho arrival of
the train to come to Altona; and while loitering about
fell In with another man who was at work on tho
road ; and tho two by some means got into a good-
natured tussel, when the latter ran Boyishly away, tho
first pursued, and in the chase tho foremost tripped
ami fell, tho Irishman (being close upon his heels)
fell over him, and by a singular fatality dislocated his
neck and died instantly 1 Afflicting Incident sorely 1
But how much more afllictlug when we add that the
very train for whicli he was waiting bora his wife and
children .just from Ireland, on their way to meet him.
Imagine then the soreuuguhh which exorcised them
while gazing on bis cold and lifeless remains, instead
of receiving his fond and affectionate embraces. Tho
picture claims a to&r.—Hollidaysburg Register.

Tho Cleveland Herald has tho following touching
edmmenton charity:
“ Wo heard to-day a little Incident, which, though
it occurred so mo time since, was a most gratifyini
proof the happy results of charity properly bestowed
A gentleman had observed a little girl, clad in rags,
pawing with a bottle, which she carried to a grocery
to bo filled with whisky, and with which she returned
home. Ono bitter cold morning, when the snow
drifted through the streets, ho saw tbo child strng*
gling homeward through tho storm with tho omni
present bottle, her little bare legs glowing with tho
effects of the cold. Ho called her into bis house,
which she entered reluctantly, and his wife, one of
those never backward in deeds of kindness, clothed
tho child with warm hose, a comfortable cloak, and,
warm and happy, she went home, atlll bearing the
bottle which was the ennso of herownnndhersistor’a
sorrow. Her father was one that owed tho gentleman
n considerable sum. Evening came, and tho drunken
futlier visited tho gentleman, but lie was now a sobor
tnan; that day the contents of tho bottle remained
untouched. • Oh, sir,’ said he, * 1 owe you money.’
• No,’ was tho reply. ' I cancel tho debt, but yoo
must quit drinking.’
Tours stood in tho man's eyes as ho said—
"' Sir, I owe you, and yon clothed tny child, when
whisky made mo a brute, and I neglected and starved
By tho holy—I’ll never taste a drop again.'
And he has not. That simple net ov charity and
kindness had touched a chord which a thousand lec
tures or words of remonstrauco would never havo
reached.”
