Congress, entitled “An act making appropriations for
tho transiwrtation of tho United States mall by ocean steam •
ers. and otherwise, during tho fiscal year ending the thir
tieth of Juno, ono thousand eight hundred and fifty four,”
approved March 3d. 1853. vis:
“Sec. 3. And be it further enacted. That tho Postmaster
General shall cause tlie facts to be investigated in relation
to the contract of A. G, Sloo, for tho transportation of tho
mail in ocean steamers from Now York to New Orleans,
Charleston, Savannah, Havana, and Chagrea. back, per act
of March third, eighteen hundred and forty-seven,
for the purpose of ascertaining how far the contract cor
responds with tho original bids, and shall report to Con
gress at tlie next session tho facte and circumstances con
nected with the said contract; and also for what,,amount
tho said mall sorrlco could be performed if a now contract
should be made, and whether the ships furnished under
said contract are built according to ita terms. Tho Post
master Genoral is further directed by this act to ascertain,
and report to Congress at ita next session, for what amounts
the sorvico, now performed under the soreral contracts
with the Navy and Pest Office Departments for carrying the
mail in ocean steamers, can be hereafter
