General shall cause the facts to be investigated tn relation
to tho contractor A. 0. Sloo. for the transportation of the
mall in ocean steamers from New York to New Orleans.
Charleston, Savannah, Havana, and Cbagres. back, per act
of March third, eighteen hundred and forty-seven.
for tho purpi so of ascertaining how far tho contract cor
responds with tho original bids, and shall report to Con
gress at the next session tho facts and circumstances con
nected with the said contract; and also for what amount
the said mall scrrlco could be performed if a new contract
should bo made, end .whether the ships furnished under
said contract are built according to its terms. The Post
master Goneral is further directed by thlsact to ascertain,
and report to Coujress at its next session, for what amounts
the service, now performed under the several contracts
with the Navy anti Post Office Departments for carrying the
mail in ocean steamers, can be hereafter performed, upon
tho supposition tbnt the United States shall take the steam-

Under the act of Congress, approved 3d March 1853. en
titled‘-An act to extend pre-emption rights to certain lands
therein mentioned,” the Pre-emption laws of tho United
8tntes os they now exist aro extended over the nUcrnato
reserved seotions of public lands along the line of the rail-
road hereinbefore mentioned, where the settlement and im
provements were madeprior to the final allotment of the at
tornate sections to tho said rallro d. Therefore all claims
by pre-emption to sny or tho nlternsio section* of public
land* withlu tho limits originally reserved will attach, If
predicated upon settlements made prior to the 4thFebruary
1853. the date of the final allotment.
Claims within the six miles limits must be proven up at
any time before the day herein fixed for tho commencement
of public sale, and are to be paid for at tho rate of two dol
lara and fifty cents per acre. Claims outside of six miles,
and within the limits of tho original reservation, must bo
proven up prior to tho restoration of snid lands to private
entry.
Soldier’s bounty land warrants, at a dollar and twonty-
■flve cents per aero, may ho received In payment for eltlior
class of laud ; one warrant only, however, can be located
by each pre-emption.
Immediately after the closo of the public sale directed
by the foregoing proclamation of the President, applications
will bo received for the purchase lit prlvatoentry, or loca

outside of the six mile* limits, in such order as to prevent
