Hideous realities they are, staring him In waking hours from almost every arti cle of composition; and at night like hydra-headed nightmare they go riding poll-moll through his brain, laden with murdered autbography, mangled etymology, suffering syntax, gasping prosody, and a stiff dead corpse of common sense meaning. Owing to them editors incur the complaints of readers, the threatening denouncements of contributors, and the pain of seeing in their own composition distorted abortions, where the had hoped for reason and taste to appear. These errors are ubiquitous In appear ance, and consistent in hideousneHS; equally deplora ble and unconquerable. Lot readers possess sympathy with editors In their afflictions,—rather than ceusure what their best ef forts cannot entirely overcomo: while they thank their stars they are not " typosSomerset mug. Moderate aalea of Prime Mesa Beef are making at 818(3 820. Beef Hams are in fair requeat at 811(318 for old, and 816 for new. to arrive. Small sates of Cut Meats, are making at 8J<©9>£4 for Hama, and 6K(37R for Shoulders. Lard la a shade better, with sales at llj{f311&- Butter ia selling at 14(3104 for Ohio, and 18(3204 for State. Clieeae In demand for export at 9#f310X4. The money market continues active, and with little change in tho rates. There is a good demand on call at 7 V cent, which ia fretly met, and thu street rates for prime paper from 9 to 12 V 4- The banks, while by no means taking all the offerings, are yet discounting to a fair extent. The bids for fivo hundred thousand dollars of fl por cent bonds of the 8tato of North Carolina were opened yesterday afternoon, at tho Bank of the itepubllo. The bonds were awarded to Francis S. Lyon, commissioner of Alabama, at 3 per cent premium, who takes them as an investment of the funds of the Bauk of Alabama, held in trust for the debt of the State, due la 1803, so that the bonds will not coma on tha market in ten years. A higher bill was offered for a portion of the bonds, but Mr. Lyon’s bid, which was for th whole or none, was the moat favorable Cor the whole amount® Tho previous issue of those bonds were dlsposod of at 106, but thore is considerable difference in the state of the money ;'rkqt, at tho time of the first issue and now. The Cincinnati papers have been greatly oc cupied for some time past in narrating tho iugenious attempts to procure the escape of this man. lie was a principal in tho celebrated “ Martha Washington ” frauds. Tho museum iff Lowell, Mass., was destroyed by fire on tho 30th. The museum nnd theatrical proper ties were owned by J. A. Hildreth and John T. Cues- ley, vplued at $6,000, and were uninsured. Tho bull- ’ ding was fully insured. George Lake has been tried ot Ponghkcopslo, and found guilty of tho murder of his wife nnd two chil dren. The crimo was committed on the 7th of Juuo last.
