ductive even to Guano 'Hie Ammonia in Guano, being free
or volatile. Its escape with other elements for which it has
a greater affinity was certain, and of course nn entire loss
to tbo future improvement of the soil. To remedy this, to
make tho Salts uclive, to make the Guano a durable man
ure, to iusuiean immediate return for outlay tu a first
crop, equal to Giiniui and to afford a manure that would

My anticipations have been realized beyond my hopes,

lish the result* of their experiments In the public papers,
that the best Information .:iny be collected upon the sub
ject. If I am right in theory and practice. In the estimate
1 place upon the value of the compound, can any subject
be more vital to your interests T Is there any question
more worthy of your investigation ? Should it not attract
popular attention ? te there not in what has already been
shown, ample reasons for nu early enquiry into Us relativo
value, both for land nnd crop witn Guano alone ? If such
a course does not deni -ustrate all I l\sve said, you will not
be troubled with further communications from me. My ob
ject is. that you should not be decoived. and the moment I
find I am. I would not continue the enterprise for one year’s
cotton crop of your whole State. I have invested somo
character a* well ns money In this enterprise. That 1 have
authority for tho preceding statements, will lie confirmed
by the following extracts froa lettors emanating from sour
ces entitled tothe highest confidence and consideration.
Under date of'JOth of list August. Mr. Chrteholm again
writes me in regard to the result* of the Salts alone :
••As ills time to think about making manure and other
prejiarntluns for next year’s crops, those of this year hav
ing received all the atteutIon. except harvesting that wc
can give them. I have thought it advisable, from the disap
pointment of other* the preseut year, to be to time with
you. wo lmd a most unprecedented drought, trora 1st of
April to fith of July, wlil-.h lias told sadly upon roost of our
crops, and also upon the effects of all manure. Of course
the Renovator has suffered ns well as other manures, but
lately our cotton crops have begun to show tho good effects
of your Renovator. A few Hunter* have without aar solici
tation on any part, expressed decided approbation ofitsef-
fects upon tho cotton, which they did not nppenr to have
the least idea of ever seeing, having applied It on their
E norest and most exhausted lauds. In hopes, apparently, of
otog able to condemn it. On my cotton it alreadygnes
ahead, one barrel per acre, of 450 bushels of cow-pen com
post, of tho best material, sedge and old j>ent. I have no
doubt that later iu the season its effects will be more per-
ceptlblo.
From my own experience. Ibellene it to he the Lett manure
I have ever teen applied to Isnuj Slajde Cotton on my lands.—
As soils differ as well as men. others may think or expe
rience differently, but my rule is to be guided by my own
experience, in preference to that of anybody else, as my
soil ami sitiiatii-n combined are rather peculiar.
Planters who have applied Guano lurgely to cotton al
ready express theinsclvos more satisfied with tlio effects of
your Renovator. I drop you this, therefore, to engage to
good time fully ns much as I engnged last year, and may
be a little more. You may save 300 barrels for me.
From conversation with Hunters, and from observation.
I would advise you to two different proportions for different
soil, for Instance, for very poor sandy soils, where growth of
cotton Is desirable, hall Gu mo and half Renovator j bptter
lands, but still rather deficient in growth of plant, one-
third Guano, or evon one-fourth, the rest Renovator ; and
to good growing lands, where fruitfulness only Is wanted,
the Renovator nlono ; and in newly cleared lands, a email
quantity hi the hob with the seed to give nn early start.-—
Hoping that your manure may continue to give satisfac
tion. and a necessary coiisenuencc.a large demand to you."

littlo that was left and directed my overseer to plow it up
and plant in tlie enine row* immediately after tho first
rains. Imping that .some good efh-cU of the salts might still
rcniatu. Tlie second jdaiitim: was done on tho 21st of Juno.
Tho seasons proved favorable, and tlio corn came up and
grow off finely. Ute nowin rousting ears, and will make
hard corn. In appearance it is nlmut a* good again as the
corn In tlie same field, plant' d on the same day, but with
out manure of any kind. The quantity applied was about
160 lbs. i>er acre. My overseer think* that quantity of
salts ami guano ha* had. under all the disadvantage*, ef
fect* about equal to tho application of thirty bushclaof
cotton seed per aero. 1 nin pleased with the effort* of th©
salts and guano, and wish you to procure and forward mo
three ton* of tl.e same article, if procurablo ut anything
like the rate of lust year ’’
Which is again followed by Dr. Baldwin B. Miller to
Messrs. N. A. Hardee A Co., my agent* in Savaunnh:
“ 1 hnvo delayed answering your letter relativo to tbo
Guano and Salt*, for tlio piirpooc of letting the corn on
which 1 put it iiinturo. U ha* already done so now. I
think It hn* added to the production 70 to 76 per cent. My
neighbors say 100 per cent.
The gypsum or aulphalo of I.imo. I think, has Increased
tlie production 25 per cent. It act* best upon Ntubblo
land, or land which lin* a good vegetable coat upon it. My
t lan of planting is a* follow* : First fallow tlio land well,
ly the rows six fi-ct apart by ruuniiignn8or 10 inch above!
quite deep, drop tlio Corn in tho furrow 3 feet opart, but
JX oz. of tlio Guano and Salt* to each hill, say )£ oz. on
each sldo of tho Corn, about 6 Inches from It. run a scut-
ter furrow on each aide ol the shovel furrow to cover tho
Corn, and afterward* run a cotton-board over tho beds.
The plaster I spread on tbo bottom of the hill and planted
the Com ou it. I used ii oz ; I think oz. will do better.
I wish you to order for nu- one ton of Guano and Salts,
made of 1’eruvinn Gtiunn. and thirty-tire barrels of Ground
Blaster, or Sulphate of Lime.”
C. F. Drake to X. A. Hardee tt Co.
"1 havo received your note requesting tho result* of my
experience to tlie unvol Kcttlewell-s Compound of Agricul
tural Salts and Guano, aud 1 embrace tho present opportu
nity toglve it to you a* fur os 1 am able. I have, the pre
sent season, used Hnster nf I’nrte, Mane’s Improved Super
Phosphate of Liine and the Salts and Guano, and must
give a decided preference totho Compound as manufactured
by Mr. Kettletveli.
-My first experiment was with a crop nf radishes; the
rows were planted 20 inches apart, tho first manured with
the salts and (iu.-ino. the second with Super phosphate of
Lime, the third had no manure at nil. and so alternately
through the bed. Those that were manured with the Salts
and Guano were full 60 per cent better than the othors.—
Tlie difference in color could be seen for 100 yards. They
were fit for market several days previous to the other rows,
and were more tender and were entirely free from that
stringency so objectionable to a good radish. There was
no perceptible difference between the rows manured with
the Super-Phosptutc of lime and those that had no manure.
My method of using it was this : t dug a trench from 4
to 6 inches deep, and scattered the Compound to It and
then covered to tlio depth of about tbice inches, and plant
ed the seed. The soil was a black, sandy loam. 1 also tried
it on salad with a good effect. Upon corn, its effect was
truly surprising.—the land upon which it was used was a
poor yellow sand, the ground was thoroughly broken up.
tho Compound was then sowed broad-coat at the rate of
800 lbs. to the acre, and harrowed in, aDd the ground mark
ed out and planted tint same ns the remainder of the field.
The portion that was manured came up first, and hoabad o
much better appearauce all through the season than tbat
which had no manure, but waa treated to other respects
the same. It ba* stood the exceeding dry weather of this
season very well: and a neighboring Planter of twenty
years’experience, says that it is full one-third better to
every respect. I intend to harvest It separately, so as to

.. with the remainder of the crop. A* to the
proper proportion of the Salts to the Guano, it is my opin
ion that two-third* of the Salts to ono of Guano Is beat for
the sandy soil in the vicinity of Savannah, as the agricul
tural Salta are generally deficient to this soil; for the low
black soil of this region one-lmll of each It may not be
improper to slate to connection with this, the result of my
use of ground Plaster: upon corn it was not perceptible,
but on a piece of Musqult Grass its effects were good, also
upon beans and English jicas. A* to the coat of using tho
Saits and Guano, I could not havo manured n* well In three
days, with two men and »team, as 1 did to loss than half a
day with one hand. I send yon this, not for publication,
but to encourage you tntbesale of an article that poa-
■cases some merit to tlio agriculturalist."
Wylie W. Mason, Esq., of Auborn. AU . wri'es me: '• I
am making a close experiment with the manures, Guano
and Salta, on one acre each of corn and cotton, and am
thus far much pleased. If the experiment succeeds as
well In fructification asfn the formation of tho vegetable
fibre, the manure ia the very best article for our soils in
this section.” ...
These testimonials could be increased far beyond the con
venience of peylug expensive advertisement*, but enough
has been nla to Incite curiosity, and if it firilt I have the
comfortable assurance of finding elsewhere a fuU demand ,
for all I can manufacture. I shall be prepared with a eon- ' ® tc „n«r Alabama. £ 0 7,?hv»iN A CO-
