Masonic Annivkksahv.—In accordance with time-
honored custom, Tuesday next, the anniversary of
81. John the Evangelist, will be duly celebrated by the
Masonlo Fraternity everywhere. The several Lodges
of Savannah, os will bo seen by the proceedings
published In another column, are not tardy in pre
paring to observe the day witli proper respect.
Holiday Toys.—Among the many depots of St.
Nicholas to be found in this city, that of Mr. Hay
wood, at St. Andrew’s Hull, is largely attracting the
attention ol the little folks. IIo advertises iu this
morning’s paper that ho has just received a fresh
stock of goods by steamer, which are now open for
Inspection ; sales to continue this day, to-morrow and
next day. Crying babies tako the lead, and locomo-

DeBow’s Review.— 1 The December number of this
popular monthly is received. It is a work so well
known In the Uuited States, and appreciated by so
extensive a circle of business men of all classes, that
an extended notice of it is uncalled for. We see by
advertisement on the cover, that a few complete annu
al sets of the work—thirteen volumes, can bo had,
handsomely bound. A rare opportunity for obtaining
matter of a most valuable character, to bo found in no
other collection. Subscription to the work, $5 per

The New York Evening Mirror.—This is ono
of our old exchanges. A late number came to us
with its prospectus marked, which reminds us of a
long entertained, yet until now unfulfilled, intention
to say a few words commendatory of a paper upon
whose columns we not unfrequentiy draw for valuable
items of news and commercial metter. Ia its politi
cal proctlvlty the Mirror is decidedly “ Silver Grey
Whig," and as such enjoyed a respectable position
under Mr. Fillmore’s administration. Now that it
Is without official patronage, it has assumed a decided
ly high position as a newspaper, its energy and ability
placing it at once at the head of the evening press of
New York. Mr. Fuller, with tho able assistance of
which bo avails himself, has reason to bo proud of
the Mirror. Terms, daily $6; weekly $1. Asa family

made In tho Senate, were concurred In by the House.

A message was received from the Governor, relative to
the recess resolution. He said that ho signed It through
eourtesy to the Legislature, thinking, at the same time,
that though constitutional, it was not expedient.
By general consent of all prosent the Legislature ad

From WHmor’s IJverpool Northern Dully Times,

There are a few individuals In tills country whoso
hearts are really too large for their bodies—who would
reform every abuse, and mnko all nations conform to
their precise ideas on politics and religion—men who
would turn this waste earth into a beauteous paradise,
und perform any good work, provided it could bo ac
complished by a •* good subscription.” We give them
full credit tor their good intentions ; but us to tbeir
practical wisdom and consistency, the less that is said

That newly-formod body, the " Protestant Alli
ance,” has just held a meeting In London, ior the
purpose of memorialising Government on the aspect
of Popery abroad, •• especially with regard to the
K rsecution of British subjects in foreign countries.”
rd Shaftesbury and Sir Gulling Eardley were the
“ lions” of the occasion; and, as our readers may
bavo anticipated, there was a terrible display of vapid
oratory, to which the sentiment of Voltaire may not
inaptly bo applied : •* A terrible thing that so much
time should bo wasted in talking!” However, the
aH'uir wound up by the adoptiou of a memorial to
laird Clarendon, calling upon him to redress the nu
merous grievances of which they complained; and
there is no dm.bt whatever but what tho same will
receive, upon presentation, a most polite, dignified
and ministerial responso.
But wo should like to know who constituted those
gentleman guardians of their Protestant countrymen
abroad? We always thought that wo paid a Foreign
Secretary and Ambussudors for tho purpose, nnd tliut
whenever a foreign natiou committed uny outrage
upon upon a British subject, immediate redress and
satisfaction were demanded. IJut it does not appear
as if our governmental arrangements were complete
or efficient, and that it became necessary for u self-
formed clique to assume the reins of power. Really
those gentlemen would require a Secretary for foreign
affairs all to themselves. There is little doubt but
that ho would have moro work than he could ever got
through, even supposing each day were forty-eight
hours long.
We do not deny that tho laws of Tuscany are in
tolerant- that those of Portugal aud 8pain are no
better, if they are not worse—that they bcur very
stringently upon wliat Englishmen consider their
inaliable rights,—and moreover, tlmt they ought to
he either considerably modified or altogether repeal
ed. But, on the other hand, we must bear iu mind
that those countries are professedly Roman Catholic,
and that tho same obligation tests upon their several
governments to uphold that system of religion by all
lawful means, as noon our own to maintain inviola
ble the Established faith. Nor do wo see how great
blame can bo attached to those governments us long
os the interest of Church and Stute ore bound up to
gether. English law la decidedly moro liberal und
tolerant; but it must not be forgotten that the penal
statutes formerly enforced, both ngaitmt Catholics and
Dissenters, could not bo rivulled in atrocity by the
codes of foreign nations.
The Memorial complains of the revival of old pe
nal laws by the governments of Tmcany and Portu-
S il. But how can any reasonable tnun wonder at it?
os not England herself set the example? Has not
our Legislature created new penal enactments, aud
put them in force too, against the establishment of u
Catholic hierarchy ? Has it not forbid Catholic ec
clesiastics and religious orders from appearing pub
licly in the streets wearing any insignia of their re
spective orders? Have not motions been repeatedly
and porsevcringly brought into the Senate for the
purpose of violating the privacy of convents, and
unnulling tho dearest privilege of the Constitution,
•'that an Englishman'! house is his castleV? In
what country of the world do wo meet with such
rampant and insolent bigotry ? Do we not hear it on
the public platform—view it chalked upon tho walls
of our streets—und even tolerate it from the pulpit?

What just caiiBo. then, have wo of complaint, if Con
tinental countries take a page out of our own bonk ?
Let us, at all events, bo without sin, ere we throw
tho first stone! Let those gentlornen who are so de
sirous of abolishing tyrannical enactments abroad,
first of all endeavor to obtain more toleration at
home. Let them first pluck the beam out of their
own eye. What? We enact penal statutes against
Catholics, and wo complain that other countries
enact the same against us. Wo forbid a Jew from
taking bis seat in Parliament, because ho cunnot
conscientiously swear "upon tho truo faith of a Chris
tian I” and yet wo rave and rant about .'ibpity of
conscience, and the rights of man—aud me loutl in
declaiming against the Grand Duke of Tuscany !•
When shall we be shamed into consistency?
Some of tho reformed religionist of Great Britain,
having in vain strived to bring about a union among
themselves, havo fortunately found a grand rallying
point—" the Papal aggression”—and changing their
soubriquet have assumed the defensive. Those valiant
champions of the faith regard with jealous eye the
workings of the Jesuitical moles ; and, like the
“nervous gentleman,” fancy theyescry danger on
every side. And it would be hard to convince them
otherwise. We know " all things seem yellow to a
jaundiced eye.” and that within the whole pharmaco
poeia no remedy can bo found to suit the phases of
inonomaniucaldistemperH. Butria'ly Catholic nations
have more to fear from English fanaticism than we
have from theirs. One society labors to effect a revo
lution in the laws—another to overthrow the faith of
continental nations I How should we tolerate such
proceedings on the part of the zealous propagandists
of Catholic France or priest-ridden Italy?
This sectarian spirit is highly condemnnblo. It is
productive of the most fatal results. It sets nation
against nation—people against people-and effectu
ally destroys tlmt international good feeling which
even commercial and political policy should, far ob
vious reasons, BedulouBly cultivate. Wo hope Lord
Clarendon will teach such a seasonable lesson to those
bellicose representatives of " religious liberty” as his
distinguished colleague did to tho " fast” Presbytory
of Edinburgh.
The Eyklabue8 and Eyedrows.—In Circassia,
Georgia, Persia, and India, one of tho mother’s oarl-
ies cares is to promote tho growth of her children’s
eyelashes, by tipping and removing the fine gossamer-
like points wttli a pair of scissors, when they arc
sleep. By repenting this every month or six weeks,
they become, in time, long, close, finely carved, and
of a silky gloss. The practice never fails to produce
the desired efiect, and it is particularly useful wheu,
owing to infiamation of the eyes, the lashes have
been thinned or stunted.—Rotefand on ike Hair.
