We are glad to team, (tom a Waihlngton letter
sometime since published in the New York Iltratd,
V (which hae just fallen under onr eje in an exchange,)
that the •* Hard*’’ have very cmuldmbly moderated
the views and limited the purposes which they were
' understood to entertain. The/ n6w disclaim all bos*
.tilitj to the aotl-oompromise Democrats or tho South
—Itortelonifti though they be. The writer says: •• It
, la hot the poUc/of tho New York national Democrats

• Booth. The/will leave the party in Georgia, Ala-
hamahnd Mlninipi to settle their own qnarreU among

rention in other people's affidrs; while, at tho same
' Mine, the New York national* all recognize no other
•' OtUooal platform than the Union, the constitution,
.and the compromise resting upon the constitution."
■ .The same writer sap truly s "It bus been also be
lieved that the Dickinson people would also require
the discharge of General Dairi* from tho War Depart-
. anent, as a secession leader against tbo compromise
measures before their passage and after their passage."
. He adds: -
Bat, if we understand the views of the distinguish
ed gentleman who will no doubt bo tho leader of the
- national Democrats In the House, they will make no
war upon the booth, neither by an attack upon the
Btate Rights majority lu Georgia, Alabama, or Mis-
■imlppl.uor by au attack upon the Secretary of War.
Southern secefarionistn was but a war of self-defence
against tbo encroachments of Northern abolition-
Ista. It was taken up as the extreme remedy against
Northern incendiaries, in wbat was believed to
few an alarming exigency. They tiled the issue
against the cession ol the whole of California to the
North In Alabama. Mississippi and Georgia. But the
. act bad been adopted by OongroM. the people of
these States acquiesced, and the striko for recension
was silenced. But, because a portion of the Southern
Democrats do not recognise the justice of giving the
whole of Caifornia to the North, it U not the policy
of New York bankers to taboo them. Their acquies
cence In the adjustment of I860 is enough, mid their
opinions concerning the injustice of a single measure
are far from comprehending any danger to the Union.
We do not hesitate to assert that if the movements
of the "Hards" bad been from.their inception con
trolled by the spirit here manifested, their warfare
npob the " barnburners" would bare awakened cor
dial sympathy in the minds of many Soathern men
who have hitherto regarded the contest with cold in
difference.. But when we were given to umloraitand
tbaCrr successful in prostrating the soflshcll*, their
next move would be the political destruction of all
who bad opposed the compromise In the South, it is
net strange that the so-calied secessionist* reserved
their sympathies. Not that we had any particular
affection for the ^barnburners, or even for the soft-
abclis; but we did not care to be very violently in
favor of men who were understood to be no more the
enemies of the barnburners and softs than they were
Muscogee Knliroml.
The lost issue of the Columbus Time* contains the
report of Mr. Gbiffin, President of the Columbus

ings of the road, for eleven months, have been $59,.
699 39, and the current expenses, for the same period,
have been $37,807 95—showing nett profits to 30lb
November, $21,731 44. The statement of receipt*
■bows, says the President, that these profits have all
accrued within the lost four months, or since the con.
aummation of the connection between Columbus and

Is made of the operations from tho 1st of August last
