8. H. I*.
To Hargont.
I ask thco not, oh Ioto, to mourn
When Death, with visage stern.
Hath me to that far country borne,
From which no step* return.
I would not havo a single tear
To dim thy beaming eye,
When madly o’er my early bier
The wild wind* whistle by.
Or rather weep that 1 must lire,
Mid all the pang* of strife,
The fierce despair that care can give,
The agonies of life ;
Whilst passion weaves its loathsome spell,
And waves of trouble roll,
And in my heart dark vices dwell,
So hateful to my soul.
Weep not for me, oh love, at all,
When living or when dead;
Oh. let no bitter tear-drop fall.
No vain regret be shed ;
I’d rather by thy smile be blessed.
Whilst life doth hold me here ;
And when Death bears me to my rest,
I shall not need thy tear.

The Heard.—The Indies' Oirn of Edinburgh, has
the following, from a lady correspondent:
•' Dear Mr. Editor:—If you wish to retain the fa
vor of the ladies, you must advocate the cause of the
6mrtf and ntourtucftf.tlwse great ornaments of the
male sex. Shaving is a modern innovation. Samson
wore a beard, and we all know what happened to
him after he was deprived of il. The patriarchs, the
apostles, Luther, John Knox and Sbakspenre, were
nil true to nature; and we have all read of Aaron's
beard, which was famed for its great leugth aud
beauty.
The advocates for smooth chins cannot certainly
vaunt of the antiquity of shaviug, which only dates
back to the Norman conquest, whereas the beard
worn in its natural state dates back to Adam in Para
dise. What would a lioness think of her noble con
sort were he shorn of his magnificent mane, and
what can wc think of a man under a similar here&ve-
j ment? I am a married woman, Mr. Editor, and I

‘Washington's Birth Day.
Yesterday, the 22J, being the anniversary of the
birth of Washington, was duly honored in our city,
and doubtless, as usual throughout the Union. Our
various military companies were out in large force.—
The weather was pccular to the season—a bright 6un
Rhone forth and balmy health-giving breezes funned
the cheek alike of man and maiden. The city
throughout presented the appearance of a general
jubilee. At an early hour the bells pealed the nou s
of cheerful music, and tbo military began to assem
ble at their respective rendezvous.
The Georgia Hussars, Capt. Lamar, mustered thir
ty privates. They repaired at 10 o’clock, to Jenk’s
Race Coarse, on the Louisville road, where they went
through the usual exercises for prizes.
The first prize offered consisted of a silver goblet
and salver, which was won by private J ames W. Me

of the Wallach a i militia were incorporated among

refused to march against the Turks, and he coiisuma-

may be rel'ed on.
The Wal achian soldiers nre continually deserting

treason against the cause of liberty—of trampling I
underfoot the provisions of tlie constitution, and 1
making it more than ever the guardian and bulwark
of a farm of despotism too revolting to Ik? tolerated
on the soil of Europe ; and therefore he is to be im

New York Canal Enlargement.—The vote of
the people of New York on the U'auul Question con
firms the authority of the Legislature to proceed nt
once with the speedy enlargement of tlie Erie and Os
wego Canals. It authorizes a new ('anal Loan, in an-
tu'.inaii'>u of the revenues of the work, to the amount
oi F.r,UOOr.ffllu. i innouraoie Uuuugti a senes ot tour
years, not to exceed $2,250,000 in any one year. It
also makes valid the Canal Certificatesfissued and
sold under the Enlargement Act of 18.51. to thc
amount of $1 J>Q0,0QR, which from thc adverse decis
ion of the Supreme Court against the constitutionali
ty of that act, have uot hitherto been formally re
cognized as part of the Canal Debt. These are to fa*
redeemed or renewed by 1st of July, 1855.
The Japan Expedition. — A letter from none
Kong, dated December lltb, huvh that the Cnitod
.States squadron, comprising the Susquehanna, Mace
donia, Powhattan, Plymouthand Vandalia. were then
in the harbor, and were preparing for departure north
ward. Commodore Perry was expected over from
Macao, in the steamer Mississippi. At Canton, were
tlie store.-liip Supply, and tlie chartered steamer
Queen ; and at Whampoa, the slotvship Southamp
ton. The Sea Witch at Hong Kong, was about to
proceed to Namon, to ship laborers for thc Panama
Railroad. Doubt is thrown upon the reported death
ol the Emperor of Japan. The report is said to be
explained by the circumstance that the death of a
Japanese Monarch places the Court in mourning for
three years, during which time no foreign embassy
can be received.
A Welcome Citizen—The New York papers state
that CaptainCreighton. of thc shin Three Bolls, whose
excellent conduct as related to tlie rescuing of pas
sengers and crew of the ill-fated San Francisco has
won for him bo much deserved praise, has determined
to become a citizen of the United States, and either
has, or is about to declare his intentions to that effect.
Seamen Rescued from a Sinking Vessel The
captain of the schooner Prospect, at Norfolk ori'the
15th inst., from Bucksnort. says thnt on the loth, in
lat. 37 10, Ion. 73, he fell in with the schooner H. M.
Johnston, of Tremont. Mo., from Georgetown, 8. C.,
for Boston, with the loss of her mainmast and in a
sinking condition. He took the crew, four in num
ber. on board the Prospect, aud carried them to Nor
folk.
During the week, we have had three arrivals from Eu
rope—tho America, reporting an easier market, with sales
on tho 30th and 31st ult. of 11,000 bales ; the Canada, an
nouncing that the market opened heavily on the lst{inst..
but hail subsequently improved, and closed tamely, wilh
sales of the week ending on tho 3d instant of 43.000 bales •
and the Arabia, informing us that after the departure of
the C-inada there was a moderate demand, with sales of
the three day* ending the 8th inst., 26.000 bales, at a slight
improvement, (some circulars quote l-16d..) and that hold
ers were no longer pressing their stock* on the market.
The commercial news by the last steamer was considered
favorable, but owing to the accounts from the seat of war.
they failed to affect prices here, and the market closed
heavy at our quotations.
