Indicate a decided improvement In the money market.
Tbe success of tbe panic-makera has been short. With
all the alarm which they were able to create—and it j
must be admitted that many ol the banks have been j
badly frightened—where arc the failures which were
foretold? Seeing to what extent commercial opera
tions in all their departments rest on public eonfi-
aenre, it is remarkable thatthia essential basis of busi
ness transactions should have received such a shock
as it has lately felt, without more serious consequences
to the trade and prosperity of the country titan have
been witnessed.
Of commercial operations in New Orleans, the
Della of Sunday morning, in an article written Satur
day night, gives the following account:
General activity prevails in every branch and all
departments ol trade. In fact, we have seldom had
the pleasure of witnessing so general liveliness nnd
briskness, animation and growing contidcncc, os we
observed to-day. The bugaboo ol hard times, scarcity
of money, unparalleled tenacity of capitalists, has
blown away; or, perhaps, so many were more fright
ened than hurt, that they thought it policy to join
with the few, and ejaculate “ money scarce,” and
under the mantle of au excitement, take advantage
and create a real panic and pressure. Fortunately,
sound argument and common sense have conquered,
nnd the agitators can now quietly retire, unmolested,
to the walks of privacy, and re.it contented with the
weak invention and feeble attempts to impair the
credit, solvency and character of the commercial com
munity of New Orleans.
Considering that we are just recovering from a sup
posed financial pressure, the magnitude of the busi
ness in Produce, for the past week, forms one of the
luoct imposing contrasts which lias fallen to our part
to notice ; and, when wo come to scrutinize the im
mensity and character of the trade, we are almost
lost in astonishment at the repeated complaints of
the want of currency and money to conduct the opera
tions referred to, when the sales of Cotton for the
{ ia.it two weeks have reached one hundred and five
housand bales; sales of Sugar, twenty thoi'snnd
hhds.; sales of Flour nearly seventy thousand bills.,
—with Corn, Bacon, and other articles, in correspond
ing quantities,—summing to an amount approximat
ing six mill -ms and a halfdollare. Yet we are gravely
asked to eutertain the lielief of a want of facilities
for the prosecution of the glorious trade of the Cres
cent City.
Plank Uoail Cnae.
The long pending controversy between tlio Griffin
and West Point Plank Hoad Company and the Infe
rior Court of Pike county, was decided a few days
since, by the Supreme Court, in favor of the former.
The controversy was as to the right of the Compa
ny to occupy a public road with their plank road.
The Jeffersonian says this right " had been awarded
to them by arbitrators appointed under the charter,
and the bill sough! to set asido the awards of the ar
bitrators for fraud. At last April term of Pike Supe
rior Court, the case ivas tried before a jury, who found
in favor of the Company. The case was taken up to
the Supreme Court on thirty-six points of error, as
we understand, alleged to have been committed by
bis honor Judge Stark, iu the course of the trial uud
in his charge to the jury.”
The Jeffersonian adds:—“ Thus ends, we trust for
ever, this profitless and unpleasant course of litiga
tion. The Circuit Court of the United States nnd the
Supreme Conrt of Georgia, have both sustained the
decisions of Judge Stark, and we look to the termi
nation of these suits as the harbinger of a better
state of fueling among those who ought ulways to
have been friends.”
Mount Vernon Association,—The meeting of the
Association yesterday afternoon, to receive the report
of tho Directresses, and to hear an address from
Hbnry Law, Esq., was very unanimously atteuted by
the fair of our city.
The report was read by brother Lank, of the He-
publican. Its exhibit was most creditable to the
liberality of the ladles of Savannah. Tito total
amount collected, if wo recollect rightly, was 11,252,
fifty of which came from Montpelier Institute.
The address of Mr. Law, twenty or thirty minutes
iu leugtli, was marked by the usual characteristics of
that gentleman's oratory—animation, ease and grace
in delivery and unbounded fluency. He was followed
by Mr. Parke Godwin, in a few remarks, laudatory
of the noble enterprize in which the ladies nro en-

The Ericsson.—Accounts are somewhat conflict
ing of the trial trip of tho Ericsson, made on Friday
of last week. Tho New York correspondent of the
Ba'timore Ama ican says of it:
Tho Ericsson’s trial trip does not seem to have been
over satisfactory. Him made four miles an hour, and
what little hope remained of tho success of the iu
volition is now dissipated. The defect is precisely
the saino that condemned the first engine—the im

■'o thr Committee :
Gent*.—1 have received the communication signed
y tli.' Ship-masters of thc United Nates that you
ere deputed to lay before me, containing the par-
cul.irs of the gross outrage committed by thc Cap-
do if the port of the Chiticha Islands upon your-
lv * and others, citizens of the United States, ou
le 17th of this mouth.
The mere perusal of your statement is sufficient to
xcitc the highest indignation ; and it would lie u
tatter of surprise to me. considering tlie unprovoked
id ug/i-ijvateil nature of the nssault.and tho wounds
illicted by the soldiery, that you did not punish the
fender ou tlie spot, were I not aware of tho provep
,al love of order aud respect for thc law which so
istinguish our nation.
But, Gentlemen, you thought and acted upon the
ying o- easion, with moderation nnu prudence, in
le highest degree commendable. You pursued the
roper course, aud you detuuuded satisfaction through
in proper aud legal channel, and in doing so, you
ill not be disappointed ; for tho Government of the
fiitcd States has never yet permitted, nnd never will
•rmit, the perron or the rights of ita citizens to I t
utraged with impunity.
1 have laid your statement before thc Peruvian Gov-
rntnent. and it has promised that the Captain of the
- ort shall bo forwitlu removed from the command at
>e Chiucha Islands, and brought to trial to answer
>r his criminal conduct. I have exacted this, aud
mil see that is accomplished.
In returing to your vessels, therefore, I have to re-
lest thut you will use your influence with our fellow
tizeits at the Chincbas. to cal/n the indignation and
ngcr so naturally excited by the crintlual nnd uu-
; istilinble conduct of the Captain of the l’ort, relying
pon tlie will and the ability of your Government to
rotect and uphold tiieir right. Thauking you for

Mrs. Keen# was born In Bunbury, JJberty county. Bhe

who practised medicine In liberty county and Hovanuab.
Mrs. Evans waa educated In England, and enjoyed the beet

mind, and graceful manners; she wa# remnrkkbly cheerful
in spirit, always looking upon the bright side of life; she
united great decision and energy witli a kind disposition,
and an affectionate heart; her sympathies wero always
ailvo to the suffering* of mankind, and her charities large
and prompt. Her life was marked witli a most noble gene
rosity of spirit and action ; she delighted In making other#
happy, and she exemplified tlie truth that It It more bleated
to give than to receive. But she was blessed with a heav
enly charm, which gave a new lustre to her many virtues—
It was the“0race of God, which bringeth salvation.” Cast
ing away all human merit, and works of righteousness, she
lived by faith upon the Bon of God. and leaned on Ins al
mighty arm In every time of trial. For nearly forty year*
she was a consistent member of tlie Presbyterian Church,
aud her Christian character waa marked by prayerfulnes*
and unwavering trust In God ; Ills overullng Providence,
aud Ills glorious plan of salvation. Such was her charac

of death.
Wo cannot forget our ostceincd relative ami friend ; she
was one ol the last links which bound us to tlie fathers and
mother* of tlie Revolution ; she wa# the charm of the fami

we will remember that our lo** is her unshakable gain, nnd
