The Brunswick Neics heartily endorse# tho Thom-

the part of Southern Georgia, and annexation to Flori

We believe there la not a permanent citizen rcald-

aider a "lop off” of Southern Georgia, and uniting
to Florida, ah the dawning of a belter day. Mu Jt
excitement prevails here In ibla cltv and immediate
vicinity In lavor of the scheme. In tact, we have
talked with many, and we have not found one indi

present condition, If lu secediug thereby wo ucoom-

of the sovereigns—where wc can at least hare a hear
ing In the interest of the wholo |»eople and the State
at large, without detriment to peculiar sections of
the country. Florida, wo believe, will jump at the
proposition. What a great and glorious State it will
make, striking from tho AlLunaha and Ocmulgee
riven, which would be the natural bouuduries be
tween the two States.
Tho writer or the foregoing does not hesitate to

says Draydeu, ‘ to make things plain.' Instructors
of children—and-it is n good thing there are schools
for such—should remember this, in their duties. • I
once saw a clergyman,’ writes one who has made the
thoughts and feelings of children his study, ‘try to
teach the children of a Rabhath-school that the soul
would live after they were all dead. The boys and
girls listened, but they evidently did not understand.
He was too alwtmct *at first. At Icngcth however,
taking his watch from his pocket, which arrested
their attention in a moment, lie said:
* James, what is this 1 hold in my haud ?”
4 A watch, sir.’
* A little clock,’ said another.
4 Do you see it?”
4 Yes, sir.’
‘ How do you know that it is a watch ?”
4 Because wo see it, and hear it tick.’
* Very good.’
He then took off tho case, and held it in ono hand
and the watch in the other.
4 Now, children, which is the watch? You sec
that there are two which look like watches. Very
well. Now I will lay the case down—nut it there in
my hat. New let us see if we can near the wntcli

‘Yes, sir, wo hear it,’exclaimed several at once.
4 Well, children, the watch can tick, go. and keep

children. Your body is nothing but the owe. The
body may 1st taken off ami hurried in tiic ground.and

TH© Evening Pvayrr,
Wo can scarcely imagine u scene more full of beau
ty and meaning than that presented by the little
child who kneels at his mother s knee to ask Cod’s
blessing upon the sleep into which he Ls about to en

mighty prayer. It recalls the past to-day, and it re
minds oi' tho future to-morrow ; lends us to feel how
much to-day's words and deeds will affect to-morrow’s;
and, above all, to teach as that the greutest physical j
or moral power which we may possess is notour own. i
but lent to us by a kind Creator. Sir T. Browne says i
that “Sleep is Death’s younger brother.and no like |

Yon look upon the babe asleep iu hi.s cradle, nnd
any it is n picture of perfect repose. You are right.
Tbe infant feels the fullest faith iu its mother's or
its nurse's care, and thus its repose is perfect. The
child will grow to manhood, and his face will no long
er wear that happy look of peace and faith, unless
he has learned to turn from a mother's to a Father's
care and love. If, nt his mother’s knee, he has daily
asked for that love, ho will still have the trustful
child’s spirit which hung so beautifully over his in
fancy, and grow every day more and more like those
who, having '• become like little children,” arc ready

Orlcutul Modest y and. PolUeutu,
A traveller iu tho Oriental counti iea relate* the
following:
“ At the town of Derr I got accidentally into a little
adventure tlmt might have proved extremely unpleas
ant. Small nt the place was, I contrived to lose my
woy, aod became entangled among n number of gar
den walls and narrow passages. Proceeding along
ono of these 1 fancied I heard female voice*, and
presently, emerging Into a shady court, beheld a
young Circassian in thu bath, attended by a black
female slave. In Christendom, thu lady would cer
tainly have shrieked, and brought forth tho whole
household in a moment; but her oriental education
had taught her great caution. Casting on me a look
of 8tirpn.se, as sho stood upright in the marble basin,
as white as the marble itself, she asked how I came
hither. I replied that I had lost my way, and knew
not how 1 had come nor how to depart. Perceiving
my perplexity to be unfeigned, sho replied—'Strang
er, you are in much peril; hut follow the slave, nnd
film will conduct you to a place of safety.’ Ho say
ing, she waved her hand towards a dark corridor,
through which, after bowing to the lady, I followed
the negress, till wo reached a small door opening in
to the street. As it would have been extremely awk
ward to meet any gentleman ot the establishment
within the walls, as they might have shot mo first,
and then inquire how I came thero, I felt considera
bly eased by escape.
A modem medical writer has a word for parents
who expose their children’s limbs to the cold. Wo
commend tho advice to all who indulge iu this prac
tice : 44 1 cannot pa*s without n word upon the bar
barous regimen which custom and the ignorant con
victions of many parents have prescribed for infnnLs
and young children. 1 allude to tho practice of half-
dressing children, which is adopted iu almost all
weathers, sometimes with a view to show off, some
times, it is said, to invigorate nnd 44 harden" the child.
The continued impression of cold thus allowed to be
made on the arms, shoulders, legs, and often bodies
of young children, must result, unless the power of
tho system ho very great, in gradually establishing u
congestive circulation, that will favor the develop
ment of tubercles in tho lungs or mesenteric glands,
of dropsy of the brain, chronic diarrhea, bronchitis,
catarrh, and so on, to say nothing or tho multitudes
of the little sufferers cut off by the croup, nud other
acute inflammations. Parents should know, nud not
forget that children have less power of generating
beat than adults ; and that consequently in cool or
cold weather, their bodies and limbs should receive
ns careful an envelopment and protection as those of
grown persons liable to tho same degree of exposure;
lor u more careful, the selfish attention of the latter
to their own comfort and health will hurdlyadmitof.”
