Mr. Jkmkmiaii Davis, an old and rcspoctablo plant
er and stock raiser, of Tellair county In tills State,
called upon us yesterday and related the manner in
which, on Sunday last, he was successfully swindled
out of $200, In our city. It appears ho arrived here
on Friday last, on board the steamboat Chat. Hart-
ridgt, and, intending to transact his business litre in
time to return on tho same boat, he continued his
quarters on board. On Sunday morning ho attended
church, and In the afternoon walked about to view
the city. In his rambles he ascended to tho cupola
of the Exchange, where among others lie met a man
haring the appearance of a gentleman, with whom
ho soon became on noclublo terms. As tho newly
mado acquaintance himself professed to reside in an
adjoining county to Telfair, aud to bo engaged In
mercantile pursuits, and also to be quito well ac
quainted iu Savannah, the old gontlemau, Davih, at
once felt entirely at home in his society. After en
joying the extended prospect over the city and sur-
rounding country, talking over the prices of cotton,
which Davis had sold, and tl.e price or dry goods
and groceries, which bis newly made acquaintance
had purchased, and was to ship on board tho Charles
Hartridge, as he represented, the two descended ami
concluded to attend evening church service.
On their way to Church, however, they missed their
direction to the place Htarted for, and finully conclud
ed to take a walk into the suburbs of tho City. They
proceeded to korsyth Place, where they seated them
selves on the iron chairs within tho enclosure. After
talking over tho rapid strides mado in various im
provements in and about tho City and tho rising
greatness of tho Empire State of the South, they
touched upon tho financial condition of the tiines.and
then upon their success. Davis disclosed tho fact in
his assets were embraced a few hundred dollars in
ready money, whereupon his friend produced u check
filled up on the State Dank Tor $900, and Just then
thinking that ho had immediate use for #200, propos
ed that Davis should let him have thnt amount of
money until the next clay, aud rccoivo tho Check os
security for its re-payment. On being assured that
tho check was'*perfectly goal," Davih accepted it,
and after carefully stowing it away in his pocket
book, counted out $200 and paid it over, fouling hap
py to accommodate his friend, and not a little flatter
ed at the confidence reposed in him by one almost u
stranger, in placing in his hands n check for so large
an amount for tho temporary loan of the paltry sum
or $200.
After the exchange of documents tho stronger
friend saw at a littlo distance an acquaintance, to
whom he desired to speak a moment. He according
ly left tho old gentleman, money in hand, and ap
proached his friend. On meeting a moment's con
versation poised, when the third person snntehed the
mouoy from tho possession of the other, and made
oil*. The old gentleman's friend called out that lie
had been robbed, and asked for a knife or pistol witli
which to follow nfter the oilcndcr and have satisfac
tion. Mr. Davis, scarcely comprehending what had
just passed, and feeling his own security iu the check
which he possessed, declined furnishing a knife, ami
as for a pistol he Imd none. Thu friend, in upparent

_. . , , Washington. March 3. 1854.
Hie jury in tho Gardiner ease returned a verdict of
guilty this mnriiliig. after twouty-twu hours delihera-

Dr. Gardiner was plan d in the custody of the Mai

is supposed to have poisoned himself shortly uftci hi.*
It is not certain, however, llmt the ease is suicide ,
overwrought feeling, it is thought, may Imvo been the
Rnnun '
On entering the cell where Gardiner was confined
he was observed to drink some water, throwing his
head hack, and it is supposed he took a strychnine
pill. He was seized with convulsions almost imme
diately After giving a letter to Charles Gardiner,
his brother, ho remarked lie was going before a Judge
who would not pronouuco him guilty, and then ex
pired in great agony. His corpse remain* iu the jail,
t is not known for whom the letter was intended.
He was tliirty-Mx years old, had the education and
manners of a gentleman, and was engaged to be mar
ried to a lady in Georgetown.
Ills counsel’s exceptions to the hill contained twen
ty-nine couuIm, and some of his friends entertain the
opinion that the Circuit Court would have granted a
new trial.
The end of the Gardner drama has created tho
mostjirofound wnpation here. It is universally said
tlmt the government should turn its ntti ulion to ilie
cuiinsel who assisted Gardner in prosecuting his case
io , r V Commission. If the caw was a fraud.
Daddy Thompson, Corwin, Ac., should Iks mado to
show that they Imd no Imml in it. either by inflating
the amount or otherwise. Now that Gardner is dead
it will be a difficult matter for the government to get
legal iioasesslon or the money. It tho courts can fol
low it to his heirs,so they can also to his counsel, and
to every man who Ims received directly or indirectly
any portion of It. The civil suit which was pending
for the recovery of the money certainly expires with
