Austria In a Tight l'lacc.
It is manifest that between Franco and Kugland on
the one side, and Russia on the other, Austria Is in an
exceedingly " tight place.” Of kindred with Russia
iu tho despotism ot her government, Austria no doubt
sympathises with N ichoi.as. Moreover, she is under

Messrs. Editor.* have concluded to givo you
Italian and Hungarian provinces, now panting for an
opportunity to throw off her hateful yoke. Poland
too, will be nppenled to by the Western Powers. In
this way, all the disaffected and revolutionary ele
ments of Europo may be brought to co-operate iu be
half of Turkey. And it is only in such nu arrange
ment of hostile forces that the cause of liberty and
constitutional government can find anything to hope
from the issue of the contest.
It is, we think, to bo desired by those who wish the
preservation of Turkey, and would like to see n.strong
barrier erected in tho path of Russian aggrandise
ment, that Austria may make common cause with
Russia. In that event tho Western Powers, if victory
shall declare in their favor, need only establish Hun
gary os un independent nation of tho lirst class, by
extending its borders and increasing its population,
to interpose a most serious obstacle in the way of any
further Southern encroachments by tho Czar or his
successors.
We confess that n conflict on the part of France,
England and Austria against Russia, merely lor the
maintenance of the effete government of the Sultan,
and Mahometanism ns the faith of the city of Con
stantine—a conflict in which liberal principles
would have an opportunity to assert themselves in
no portion of Europe—is not a conflict in which we
feel any particular sympathy with the combatants on
either side. In accepting tho alliance of Austria,
England and France pledge themselves to make com
mon cause with her against any of her disaffected
provinces. During the existence of such an alliance
there would be hope neither for Italy, Hungary nor
Poland. That the Czar would in anywise counte
nance the friends of liberty struggling lor Indepen
dence, is not to be anticipated.
Ou tho .other hand, should Austria and Russia
unite their fortunes, France, England and Ttirky will
find fhoir most serviceable allies among the oppress
ed subjects of the Court of Vicuna. The contest then
becomes ono of interest to every lover of constitu
tional government—for it will not be too much to
hope as its result, the independence of Hungary und
perhaps of Italy.
Fine Beef Cattle.
Wo noticed last Thursday morning a lot of fine
beef cattle ready to hike tho cars in this city for Sa

everything right he undertakes, und Scquntcheo Vnl-
Joy has won tho prize for a fine stock country—but
in this drove, tho Major has run abend of all compe
tition, and Scquatchoo has turned out a workmanship
or which no valley or country nod Ikj ashamed. Our,
Savannah friends will lie agreeably surprised at the
line opportunity nflotdcd them of luxuriating on lino,
fat beet at this season of the year, anil a season, ton,
when corn in the country is ho high that few stock
raisers will feed it away to fatten cattle.—Cluittnn

Wo understand that 18 of the aforesaid “ beef cat

The recent horrible murder nt Onondaga Wo»t Hill,
noar Syracuse, N. Y., of Mrs. Ruth Tiler, has created
intense interest throughout tho country. Most of tho
developments iu regard to it have been laid before
our readers, but every mail brings us something new,
putting a more terrible face upon tho affair. The Sy
racuse Republican, of Monday, has tho following:
Confession ok tiir Girl.—Tho servant girl. Mary
Cummings, now under arrest, has confessed that she
knows that Alfred Tiler murdered his wife I That a
criminal intercourse hud existed between him and her
for sometime past; and that she knew previously that
lie was going Vo kill his wile tint did not know when.
That some months ago he attempted to poison his
wife by inlusing poison into the coffee, but finding lie
could not poison Ills wife without affecting nil the
family, ho threw the coffee away.and she, Mary Cum
mings, washed out the coU'cu pot. She is supposed
to ho enciente.
She says that on the night of tho murder she saw
him kill his wife, and afterwards lie and site arranged
tilings and preparations to conform witli the idea at
tempted to In* conveyed by the testimony of a rob
bery.
A later edition of the Republican says that since
tho foregoing was prepared, some very Important
facts have been gleaned, which will lie inude public
in due time : that notwithstanding popular opinion !
is very much against Tiler, it should in- curbed until
further investigations have I on made. Tiler declares
lie is innocent, and is very calm and composed.
it appears that two brothers of tho girl Mary Cum-
miugs who were iu Tiler's employ, gave contradicto-1
ry testimony in the case, nml that one of them has I
large black whiskers nnd curly hair, and is as tall as
Tiler. The little boy, Henry Tiler, it will he remem
bered, testified that the murderer was not any taller
than Ids lather, and bad whiskers like his father.
Notwithstanding these circumstances, the telegraph
1ms informed us that the coroner's jury returned a
verdict of murder against the husband.
Tho murdered woman was buried by tho side of
Tiler's first wife, who died in 1843, at the ago of 23,
and whoso tombstone is iuscrils-d as follows:
•• I/i! where lids silent marble weeps,

LETTER FROM TIIK K)lFUROR TO TIIK CZAR.
" Palace of tiik Tcii.kriks, Jan. 29,1854.
“ Siuk : Tho iliflurencF which him arisen between
youe Majesty and the Ottoman I'ortu ha* assumed
such a grave aspect, that I think it right mysidl to
explain directly to your Majesty tho iiait which
Franco bus taken in this question, ami the means
which suggest themselves l<> mo in ordi r to avoid the
dangers which menace tin* tranquility of Europe.
" The note which ymir Majesty lias just sent to my
Government, and to that ol Queen Victoria, endenv
nrs to prove that it was the system of pressure adopt
ed from llm commencement by the two maritime
Powers which alone involved the question in bitter
ness. On the eontraiy. according to my view, the
matter would have continued a Cabinet question, il
the occupation of the two Principalities had not sud
denly transferred it from the region of discussion to
tlmt of fact. Nevertheless, although your Majesty's
troops had entered Wullaehia. wo advised the I'm to
not to consider that occupation ns a warlike act, thus
iimving our extreme desire for conciliation. Alter I
had con-wlted with England, Austria, and Prussia, I
proposed to your Majesty a note, designed to give
satisfaction to all. Your Majesty accepted it. Wc
hud hardly, however, h cn informed of this good news
when your Minister, hv explanatory commentaries,
destroyed all the conciliatory effect* of it, und thus
prevented us from insisting at ('oiistautiiioplo upon
its pure nnd simple adoption. The Porto, tor its own
part, suggested some modifications in the note, to
which the representatives of the four powersatVi-
onnn were not indisposed to agree. They were not.
however, agreed to by your Majesty, it was then
that the Porto, wounded in its dignity, its indepen
dence threatened, and being compelled to raise an
army to oppose that of your Majesty, preferred to
declare war rather than remain iu a state of imccr-
Tlie Kiiiprcss of Frnurc n Woman.
Of course she is a woman, hut we mean she has a
true woman’s heart. It will lie recollected that a wo
man in male attire was discovered at work on one of
the railroads in France, for the purpose of support
ing a sick husband and four children. The Empress,
on learning tin* circumstance, immediately lequc-tcd
to lie accurately informed of*the details of the affair,
und subsequently ordered the I'ol’owing letter to lie
addressed to the poor woman :—Madame—The Em
press lias read with peculiar inti rest the recital of the
pious fraud which you made use of to support your
sick luisliaiid and feed your poor children. Deeply
aflbcted at this recital, her majesty immediately con
ceived the idea of ofleriug to take under her charge
two of yonv children, and lias ordered me to come to
an understanding to tliutt li'cet with the Prefect of tho
Drome. The Empress is not ignorant that there arc
virtues for which the exalted of the earth can find no
reward, but she desires to give you a proof of the
sentiments with which your conduct lias inspired her;
she wishes, Madame, that yon should know that her
personal sympathy is acquired to the devoted wife
and to the courageous mother of u family. The poor
woman, whose name is llch-dicn, having selected her
eldest girl and eldest hoy to lie placed under the pat
ronage of the Empress, suitable arrangements have
been made for the accomplishment of her Mujosty's
philanthropic intentions.

The trial of John Charles Gardiner, for perjury,
will commence sometime next week, as soon as the
tainty ami humility. The Porte had claimed our [ minor cases are disposed ol.
support; the cause ot the Porte appeared tons to be
a just one, and the English and French squadrons
were therefore ordered to the Bosphorus.
“ Our attitude in reference to Turkey, wits that of a
protector, but it was passive. We diil not incite her
to war. We unceasingly addressed to the ear* ol tin-
Sultan the advice of peace and moderation, per.-uaded
that tills ivns tin bo-T mode of coming to an agreement,
and the four Powers uniisiiib-d together again, and
submitted to your Majesty some olln-r propositions.
Your Majesty, on yum- pail, exhibited the calinues.s
which arisesIroni tho consciousness of strength, con
tented yourself with repulsing iroui tho lelt bank of
the Danube, as in Asia, the attacks of tlu- Turks ; and
with the moderation worthy of the chief ol a great
empire, your Majesty declared that you would act on
tin- defensive. Up to that period, then, we were, I
may say, interested spectators, but simply specula
tors, of the dispute, when tile ultuir of Sinope com
pelled us to take a more decisive part. France and
England had not thought it necessary to send tioops
to the assistance of Turkey. Their llag, therefore,
was not engaged ill tile conflicts which took place
u,ion laud. Hut at sea it was very difli-ront. There
iv-ro at the entrance to the Bosphorus 3.000 guns,
the existence of which proclaimed loudly enough to
Turkey that the two leading Maritime Powers would
not allow her to lie altucked by sea. The affair at
Sinope was for us as painful as it was unexpected ;
for it matters little to us whether or not the Turks
wished to convey munitions of war to the Hussion
Territory. In fact, Russian ship* attacked Turkish
vessels in the waters ol Turkey, while those vessels
were riding quietly at anchor in a Turkish port. The
Turkish vessels were destroyed,in spite ol the assur
ance that there was no wish to commence an aggres
sive war, and in spite of the vicinity of our sqadrons.
It tens no longer ovr policy which received a check,
it te n »ur military honor. The sound of the cannon-
shot at Sinope reverberated painfully iu the hearts of
all those who in England and iu France respect na
tional dignity. There was a general participation in
tlic sentiment that wherever our camion can reach
our allies ought to be respected. Out of this feeling
arose the order given to our squadrons to enter the
Black Sea, and to prevent by force, if necessary, the
recurrence of a similar event. Thence arose the col
lective notification sent to the Cabinet of St. Peters
burg, announcing that if we prevented the Turks
from making an aggressive war upon the coasts ot
Russia, we would also protect the Turks upon their
own territory. As to tho Russian fleet, in prohibiting
its navigation ol the It a-k Sea, wo placed it upon a
different condition because it was important during
tliu ivur to preserve a guarantee cquviulcnt in force to
the occupation of the Turki-di territory, and thus fa
cilitate tho conclusion of pence by having the power
of making a desirable exchange.
“ Such, Sire, is the result, and a statement of the
facts. It is clear that, having arrived ut this point,
they must either bring about a dell, file understand
ing ora decided riq ture.
