The feelings of pride with which Mr. Mat has for years
contemplated the progress of tho Seaport of his native
State, a frcling which has frequently found expression in
tho enlumiiH of the Southern Democrat whilo under his
charge—I* the host assurance that nothing ho cau do will
l»> wanting to bring trade to Savannah—(•specially to those
whose advertisement* appear in tills paper. So that while
an agent for us he will at tho *nmo time bo a most efficient
advocate, wherever he goes, of thu interests of the City,

The political principles nf tho Georgian will of course
continue to he those of tho Democratic school; though
politic- will play a part in its columns altogether subordi
nate to Us news, business and commercial character. To
its commercial department, especially, will tho most assid
uous attention continue to bo given. The reputation which
i( has already established for tho accuracy, fullness and
clearness of its cotton tables, cotton statements nnd mar
ket reports.it shall b« our endeavor to increaseatul extend.
Finally, as a medium through which to obtain the latest
intelligence, the Georgian commends itself to a very exten
sive region of Georgia, nearly tho whole of Florida, nnd a
considerable portion id South Carolina and Alabama. A
p«l--r published Imtliis city can give foreign accounts. New
York and New Orleans cotton markets, and other telegraphic
report*, a day in advanco of our Charleston cotemporaries.
To this we may add. that iu future, steamship* from Now
York and Philadelphia will furnish us twice or three times
each week, newspaper accounts from the North a day in ad-
vunco of the laud mail.
