■hire. We doubt the correctness of Its statement—
Indeed we have very good reason to doubt whether
tu intelligence is any later than that contained in the
New York papers ol Saturday. In ono or those we
find the following announcement, from a source which
wc deem worthy of credit:

hundred and forty-live others elected. The towns to

We have watched with lively Interest the well con
tested race which has for aorao time been going on
between Morse's telegraph and Uncle Sam's malls.
Ouo day tho telegraph is ahead : the uext tho mails
aro victorious. Not unfrequently a dispatch Is hand
ed us giving abstracts of intelligence, a tolerably full
report of which Is already on our table iu tho news
papers. Yesterday morning wo received tho tele
graphic account, which appears in another column,
of tho New Haven and Yule College riot: a little
later wo had in the mails, brought by the steamer

Hoi'sk r»K Hki’iiksentatiVE8.—Mr. ('.hidings took
tho lloor and proceeded ut considerable length to
criticise tho President's Message in relation to the
seizure of the steamer black Warrior, lie contend
ed that the authorities at Cuba had done nothing hut
prelect their revenue laws from infraction, u duty
which they were bound to perform. The case was
precisely similar to our recent seizure of several of
the Canard steamers at boston, and no one dared to
doubt the Justice or their seizure -nor had there been
any excitement in England or warlike messages in
consequence of such seizure. Tho whole thing he
regarded as ridiculous, and denounced the President
for having asserted that this government nnd people
had pocketed repeated insults from the Spanish gov
ernment, which no contended was not the cose.
In conclusion ho asserted Hint tho President hud
most uugnllantly selected a moment to make these
threats against Spain when the two allies of Spain
were lighting with Turkey, the battle of freedom, und
when the cress mid the crescent are seen together in
a common cause or humanity. Does thin look like
chivalry to thus strike her iu the dark ? He regard
ed the whole affair as a scheme to steal from Spain the
brightest gem in her crown.

from the Exchange, after the performance was over,
by a crowd of men and boys, who, on account of a
disturbance that occurred among them the night pre
vious, were exasperated at the Collegians, and took
tho occasion to vent their spite by bootings, and his
sings. nnd throwing of stones. The crowd proceeded
up CliapcI street, as far ns Temple, when a general
fight with stones and brick-bats ensued. C'upt. bis-
sell. who was on the snot with life assistants, did all
in his power to quell the riot, but had not sufficient
force to accomplish his purpose.
During the melee a number of pistol shots were
fired, most of which were discharged iu the air, and
without doing injury to any person. Several were hit
with stones and other missiles^ but no one was seri
ously hurt, until tho crowd arrived in front of the
bookstore of Mr. L. \V. Fitch, when O'Neil wus seen
to stagger and full upon the pavement.
He was picked up and Immediately conveyed to
the Police Office, where he expired in a few moments.
Drs. Knight and Jewett were called in, and upon an
examination found that the deceased hud been stabbed
in or near the heart.
It is not yet known by whom the murder was com
mitted, uud no arrests had been made up to ]2
o'clock.
O’Neil, we understand, was arrested on Thursday
evening, for being concerned iu the disturbance 1
which occurred at that time, and uftcr being warned
by the officers, und muking promises for the future,
was discharged from custody; and early last eve
ning he was agaiu spoken to and advised to go home,
but he remained, and lias thus come to an awful end.
The bloody affair created a great excitement in the
street, and it wu i feared for a time tliut it would lead
to a more serious difficulty. Several church bells
rung an alarm. and a large crowd of people were
gathered about the corners—but the police, aided by
a large numberof law-abiding and peaceable citizens
succeeded iu quelling the disturbance, und when we

The circular of tho Minister of Foreign Affairs to
nil Hie agents of France abroad is a ni w proof of the
community of views ami the warm sympathy which
pervade the relations of France ami England. Th-
commerce and the natives of each of the two conn

scl- of war of the two Governments. Hostilities are
to fake place by sea and by land ; and it is therefore
nece-sary to provide for all f he incidents which the
chances of war may produce on sea ami land. Now.
it may happen that at a given point of the globe, one
of the two nations may not have, at ngiven moment,
11forces nece.-v-ary to provide for its defence ; but
the agents ami the forces of tho other will he there to
supply the want, lu reality, wu believe but little in
the danger which the commercial interests of France
or of Great Britain may have to support in a war
in which the common enemy has lie chance of find
ing allies. What can wo have to dread from his fleets,
which aro prisoners in two closed seas? What have
we to f. ar on distant shores from his naval stations,
which may easily become the prey of our cruisers?
Ami we are strong enough to strike terror into the
privateers which Russia may attempt to arm. Rut
howev' r small may ho the danger, tho resolution con

markable tor its moral consequences. It causes ail
the agents of France and England, to the extremitie-
of the globe, to feel the samu spirit as that by which

unite tho policy of one and the other ; and we cannot
resist, for our part, the pleasure of remarking Un
generous emulation of chivalrous sentiments which,
iu all thu measures taken by the two Governments,
enhances the already imposing character of their al
liance.
The following is the circular addressed by the Min

" Sir: Obliged to admit the possibility of ho.-tili-
ties between them and Russia, the Government of
His Imperial Majesty ami that of her Britannic Majes
ty, have considered that the alliance which they have
contracted in presence of u common danger should
be directed to protect such of their interests as may
be menaced by tlio consequences of a state of war.
Whatever be the extent of tho resources at tlieir dis
posal. particularly by sea, they havo also to take into
consideration tho fact of sudden and unforeseen
emergences. Should war break out, cases may occur
in places where the naval force of each Power may
not be constantly present, and when tlieir subjects
and their mercantile flag, may not have, at the nec- s-
sary moment, the support imJi-nciisablu to tlieir safe
ty. The two Governments, acting in the spirit which
inspires their present relations, seek the means of
providing for such emergencies ; and they find it in
the adoption of a system of reciprocal protection,
embracing interests which are disseminated iu every
latitude. The diplomatic and commercial agents, as
well as the commandants of the naval forces, of each
Vf tho two countries on all points of tho globe, are
therefore to afford their aid to thu subjects and the
commerce of tho other in all cases where they may
be menaced by the common enemy. You are conse

which the circumstances resulting from a state of

States ns Rhode Island, and Minnesota sixty. Mil;
mniri is larger tlmn all New England. Ohio exceeds
cither Ireland, or Scotland, or Portugal, and equals
Belgium, Scotland nml Switzerland together. Mis

A German, iu Cincinnati, lias invented a powerful
microscope, which has such an immcii.su magnifying
power that by it the dust, which, by contact with the
wiugsof a butterfly adheres to the linger, is shown to
be u number of feathers, on which lougltudlnul uud
transverse lines may be discovered. On a very mi
nute particle of dust, from the wing of a midge,
measuring only one five-hundredth of an inch in
length, nnd one-thousandth of an inch in breadth,
thu number of scales is found to lie 84,000, which
gives the enormous sum of forty-two thousand mil
lions to one square inch.
European Affairs.—It seems to Ihj thought by
the best informed public men here, that the revolu
tion in Spain, commencing nt Saragossa,of which tvi
have news this morning, is to be ti e first of a serie
I ol popular outbreaks, similar to those of 1848, nil
over the continent. They nrc expected to follow in
quick succession. It is further believed that, not-
| withstanding the so much b.-tt r preparation of tbe
, different European governments, the chances for the
j people ure niu < *h better now than in Isis, none ol
tl ,e standing unities being likely to lie trusted by their
employers, nml the people being much wiser iu t ic
management of their affairs than on that occasion.—
H o may add, that in such circles in Washington the
opinion that (here will bo no collision between Russia
and France and England, on the Turkey question,
also continues to prevail, notwithstanding the late
parade of great preparation for such an event that
has taken place of lute.— Washington Star, 17//i.
Tho immense supplies required for the army and
navy, has given full * s.iploymeut to thousands of work
men iu England and Ireland. There lilts been a con
siderable increase in the wages among some classes
of the mechanics.
Mr. I'enhody.the American banker in London, gave
a splendid dimer to some of his country men on Wash
ington’s Birthday; u numberof distinguished gentle
men were present. Mr. Buchanan, Mr. Brown, M. I'.,
and Col. James Watson Webb, were the only speak
ers. Mr. Sickles, Secretary of Legation, was not at
the dinner.
One of the London papers mentioned the other day
the extraordinary ami enormous umount of the coin
age Inst year; but the other two great Mints of the
w*>rld have been equally active. The coinage at he
London Mint amounted in value to no less than
£12,<>(13,009; in France the coinage of the year
amounted to £14,191,120; and in the United States
the amount was £11,901,702, so that the three princi
pal Mints of the world issued in that one year coin ol
the value of £38.725,8)11. The Economist justly re
marks that such an immense amount of coinage, still
leaving complaints of insufficient currency to con
duct the domestic transactions ol these three great
■ountries, points to an increase of trade and activity
in productive industry without any parallel in the
history of the world.
Mini O'Brien's Pardon—The only condition an-
•••d to thu free pardon so graciously granted by
the Queen to Mr. Smith O'Brien, is the Usual one of
not returning within her Majesty's dominions. In-
d, for the present, to return to Ireland could not
considered desirable to himself. It is stated bv
bis friends that ho will probably join his family in
France, where they have liecn residing fur some time
-t. A free pardon will also be, probably, extended
Messrs. Martin nml O’Doherty, who were convict-
some time before Messrs. O'Rricu, Meagher, and
Donohue, for the minor offence ol Moliiious publica
tions, and who were sentenced to a limited period ol
transportation, the greater part ol which lure already
expired. It is not probable that any further indul
gence will be granted to tho other convicts, wlio
have committed a second offence against the law by
escaping from tlieir seuleuce.—London Observer, op

Ml'it her in Somerset County.—Tho Snowhill,
Md., Shield says a frightful murder was committed
in that county on Sunday afternoon, the 5th inst. A
white boy named Davis, nged nbout 15 years, living
with Mr. George Payne, had been left at home with a
negro woman. A quarrel arose, and the woman
stunned the boy by a blow on tho head with a stool.
Supposing he was dead, she became ularmed and
threw the body in the well, where it was some days
afterwards discovered.
On last Saturday u fugitive slave was nrrested near
Milwuiikie, and imprisoned i • the jail in that city.—
An intense excitement Iollowed, uud resulted in the
collection of a vast mob, which broke open the jail,
took out the negro, ami sent him in a wagon on his
way towards Canada. Tho military was called out,
bill the rescue was effected lie fore the troops arrived.
I lie owner ol the slave nml his assistants were arre-t-
ed on a charge of assault and battery.—Baltimore

Venezuela.—The British hondholdersof this South
A in"Hcan republic are in great tribulation as we learn
from the Lom'nn Times, on account of the non-pay
ment of their interest, which is past due. It is al
legeil that tin* Venezuelan government pays its do
mestic creditors, hut refuses to mnke any | revision
the foreign ones. Tho latter held a meeting in
London on the 1st February, at which the above fact
was set forth in some resolutions aJopled by the ns-
icinblage.

Our eby has at no time within our observation pre
sented more gratifying und substantial indications of
muuercial and trading progress than now. A win-
:r of sustained and continued activity is receiving
the imp, ius of a Spring trade, already actively
qiened, and which promises to be unusually heavy.
A walk tinougli our business streets nlloids to n
router degree than ever heretofore the evidence of
the advance that Baltimore is making as a thriving
nd impoitnut business mart. The activity and stir
hat denote the vitality uud animation of business,
visible everywhere along our wliuves, through the
ilitics specially claimed by the dry goods, grocery,
produce and other brandies ot trade’; in the iuitnoiree
quantities of coming and going freight that crowd
the rad read depots, in the frequent arrival ami de
parture of foreign ami coastwise shipping utonr port,
and in the large number of passengers who fill the
railroad trains und throng our hotels und streets
lie-e are indications *o apparent ns to attract the
attention even ot tho casual olwerver. We use no
lyperbolo in saying that the present year will consti
tute an euoeh in the business history of Baltimore,
and that we are now receiving an impetus that will
go fur iu driving us fonvatd iu the race of competi
tion.
The aspect of many of our business avenues has
ion entirely changed within a year nr two past.
Many of them indeed have been nearly rebuilt. The
contracted warehouses of former days have given
iduce to the lofty and spacious cstablislypeut-. Milled
to the demands of an extended business, nml whole
blocks heretofore claimed as private domicils have
changed e.hnrnctcr before the advancing steps of trade.
The city is also extending iis limits iu all directions
with a* rapidity without parallel: our population
multiplying; our manufactures both increasing ami
prospering, and tlio whole community feeling through
out all its parts tlie benefits of uu unexampled de
gree of prosperity.
This c.ondition of nffuira may bo partly ascribed to
our participation in a prosperity common to nil por
tions of the country, but it is also owing very largely,
wc feel convinced, to a better appreciation ol the po
sition nml resources of our city, and to the confidence
in tlie future that is giving energy and decision to its
onward course. Wo have but to be true to ourselves,
and to rightly pursue the path that is now opening to
