SAVANNAH. GEORGIA. SUNDAY MORNING, MARCH 26, 1854.
The SavantinH Deorulan.
The Proprietor* have the plwnn <4 announcing that
Ihoy have associated with them, a* a Onrro*|>oi>dlng Ktll-
t„r of tho 0iwiyi<tn, Mr. I*. 1.. J. May. Into Editor of tho
Oglethorpe Southern Democrat, who will devote hi* ontlro
lime and Intent* to tho intore*!* of the paper. Hy (hi* ar
rangement the dutlea pertaining to tho ofllco will bo *o di
vided, a* to enable ua to have effectually canvaaaod nut on
ly till* but tho several adjoluing State*. Thi* Norvloe i* as-
mined by Mr. May, a* a matter of preference witli him,
an l of oatiafaction to u*. Ill* acquaintance extending to
nearly every county in tleorgia, to a largo portion of Ten-
newe. to Alabama, and to Florida, |N'cullarl.v lit* him fur
the work he ha* undertaken. Mr. May will take chnrgo of
all buainn** out of the city—will ennva** for tho papor,
receive *ub*cription, and collect the due* of the office-
report all inntlen of general intcrett which may lie pre
sented to lit* notice—correspond a* occasion and interest
require, and. in short, will combine hi* exertions, physical
and mental, with our*, to give attractiveness to tho column*
and ostend the circulation of the (Awryinn.
Of the intellectual quailAcation* of Mr. May It is scarce
ly necessary for u* to speak. The ability which character-
ised the Kditoriul department of the Southern Democrat
during tho two and u halfyear* that ho was connected with
It. i* a sufficient guarautee of hi* capacity.
To tlie budne-** men of Savannah wo confidently look
for an increase of advertising patronage. Unle** mistaken
In our calculation*, our association with Mr. May, in con
nection with our arrangement*, which wo aro now mak
ing, will constitute the Georgian the best vehicle for adver-
tie- mails within their reach We expect to send It, not
only into erery (“ten. village amt neighborhood in Georgia. but
to every point in the neighboring State*, which ruilrtad
and steamlio.it have openod to tho trade of the City.
The feelings of pride with which Mr. May ha* for year*
contemplated tho progress of the Seaport of hi* natiro
State, a feeling which lias frequently found expression in
tho column* of the Southern Democrat while under his
charge—is the best assurance that nothing ho can do will
be wanting to bring trade to Savannah—especially to those
whose advertisements appear in tills paper. So that while
hii agent for us he will at tho same time be a most efficient
ndveente, wherever lie goes, of th» Interest* of the City,
mi l of tlioso of it* buNhici* meu whoso names appear in
our column*.
Tlie political principle* of tho Georgian will of course
continue to be those of the Democratic school; though
politics will play a part in its columns altogether subordi
nate to it* news, business aud commercial character. To
its commercial department, especially, will the most assid
uous attentiou continue to be given. The reputation which
it lias already established for tho accuracy, fullness and
dearnos* of its cotton tublu*. cotton Htutement* and mar
ket report*, it shall be our endeavor to Increase aud extend.
Finally, as a medium through which to obtain the latest
intelligence, the Georgian commends ItseUto a very exton-
aivo region of Georgia, nearly tho whole of Florida, and a
considerable portion ol South Carolina and Alabama. A
paper published iu thi* city can give foreign account*. New
York aud NewOrleauscottoo markets.and other Uleyra\>hic
report*, a day In advance of our Charleston cotemporaries.
To this wo may add. Hint in future, steamship* from New
York and Philadelphia will furnish us twice or tlirco times
each week, newspaper accounts from the North a day in ad
vance of the land mail.
Tho Savannah Georgian, Dally, Trl-weekly and Weekly,
will continue to be published at tho following reduced rates :
