The feelings of pride with which Mr. May has for year*
contemplated the progress of the Seaport of his natirc
Bute, a feeling which ha* frequently found expression in
the columns of the Southern Democrat while under 111*
charge—I* the best assurance that nothing he can do will
be wanting to bring trade to Savannah—especially to those
whose advertisement* appear In this paper. So that while
an agent for u* he will at the *am« time be a moat efficient
advocate, wherever he gno*, of the interest* of the City,
and of those of Ua buxines* men whoso names upprur in
Tli* political principles of the Georgian will of courso
continue to be tlm.se of the Democratic school; though
politics will play a part in Its columns altogether subordi
nate to it* news, business and commercial character. To
It* commercial department, especially, will the most a**id-
n«ns attention continue to bo given. The reputation which
It lias already established for the accuracy, fullness nnd
clearness of Its cotton tablos, cotton statement* nnd mar
ket reporta.lt ahull be our endeavor to increase and extend.
Finally, as a medium through which to obtain the latest
intelligence, the Georgian commends itself to a very exten
sive region of Georgia, nearly the whole of Florida, and u
considerable portion ol South Carolina nnd Alabama. A
paper published in this city can give foreign accouuts. New
York and New Orleans cotton markets, and other telegraphic
reports, a day in advance of our Charleston coteiuporariea.
