Ik* Proprietor* have the pleasure of announcing that
lh# r hero associated with them, ■■ n Corresponding Edi
tor of the Oenrp.ni,, Mr. P. L. J. Mat. late KHtor of the
OjWthnrpe Southern Democrat, who will devote hi* entire
Ume and talent* to the internet* of the paper. 11/ this or-
rangeinent thedntlee pertaining to the office will be eo di
vided. as to enable u* to have effectually canvaaaed not on
ly title but the aeveral adjoining Rtatas. This servioe I* aa-
earned by Mr. Mat, as a matter of preference with hlm^
and of satisfaction to ns. HI* acquaintance extending to
nearly every county In Georgia, to a large portion of Ten
se, to Alabama, and to Florida, peculiarly Bta him for
the work he ha* undertaken. Mr. Mat will take charge of
all basinet* out of the elty—will canvass for the paper,
receive subscription, and collect the due* of the office-
report all mat tors of general Interest which may be pre
sented to hi* notice—correspond a* occasion aud Interest
require, and. In ahort, will combine Ills exertious, physical
and mental, with our*, to glee attract! renrs* to the columns
and extend the clreulation of the Georgian.
Of the intellectual qualification* of Mr. Mat it is scarce
ly necessary fbr us to speak. The ability which character
ised the Fxlltorln) department of the .Southern Democrat
daring the two and a half years that he was connected with
It, It a sufficient guarantee of hi* capacity.
To the business* men of Savannah wo confidently look
for an increase of advertising patronage. Unless mistaken
In our calculation*, our association with Mr. Mat, in con*
Mellon with oar arrangements, which we are now mak
ing. will constitute the Geo.yian the best eehicts for adrer-
l,i menlt within their reach. We expect to send It, not
only Into every town, tillage and neighborhood in Georgia, but
to every point In the neighboring State*, which railroad
and steamboat have opened to the trade of the City.
The feeling* of pride with which Mr. Mat ha* Tor years
contemplated the progress of the Seaport of hi* native
State, a feeling which ha* frequently found expression In
the column* of the Southern Democrat whilo under hi*
charge—la the best assurance that nothing be can do will
be wanting to bring trade to Savannah—especially to those
whose advertlsemont* appear in this papor. So that while
an agent for u* he will at the same time be a most efficient
advocate, wherever he goes, of the Interest* of the City,
and of those of It* buxines* men whose names appear In
our columns.
Th» political principles of the Georgian will of oourse
continue to be those of the Democratic school; though
politics will play a part in its columfis altogether subordi
nate to its news, business and commercial character. To
It* commercial department, especially, will the most assid
uous attention continue to be given. The reputation which
it ha* already established for the accuracy, fullness and
clearness of it* cotton tables, cotton statement* and mar
ket reports, it shall be our endeavor to increase and extend.
Finally, a* a medium through which to obtain the latent
intelligence, the Georgian commends itself to a very exten-
aive region of Georgia, nearly the whole of Florida, and a
considerable portion ot South Carolina aud Alabama. A
paper published in this city can give foreign account*. Now
York and New Orleans cotton markets, and other telegraphic
reporta, a day in advance of our Charleston cotomporariee.
To this we may add. that in future, steamship# from Now
York and Philadelphia will furnish us twice or three times
each week, newspaper accounts from the North a day in ad
vance of the land mail.
The Savannah Georgian. Dally, Trl-weekly and Weekly,
