The Bavannah Georgian.
The Proprietor* hare the pleaanre of announcing that
they have aaaoelated with them, a* a Corresponding Fall-
tor of ;be Oenrp'dii, Mr. I'. L. J. Mar. late K itor of the
Oglethorpe Southern Democrat. who will devote hla entire
time and talent* to the interests of the paper. By this ar
rangement the duties pertaining to the office will lie *o di
vided. a* tn enable us to havo effectually canvassed not on
ly this but the several adjoining States. This service Is as
sumed by Mr. Mat, as a matter of preference with him}
and of satisfaction to u*. His acquaintance extending to
nearly every county In Georgia, to a large portion of Ton-
nessee. to Alabama, and to Florida, peculiarly (Its him for
the work he ha* undertaken. Mr. Mat will take charge of
all business out of the city—will canvas* for the paper,
receive subscription, and collect the dues of the office—
report all matter* of general Interest which may bo pre
sented to his notice—correspond as occasion and Interest
require, and in short, will combine his exertions, physical
and mental, with ours, to give attractiveness to the columus
and extend the circulation of the Georgian
Of the intellectual qualifications of Mr. Mat it Is scarce
ly necessary for us to !-poak. The ability which character
ised the Kditorial department of the Southern Democrat
(11ring the two and a halfye.tr* that ho was connected with
It. is a sufficient guarantee of hla ca|>acity.
To the business* men of Savannah we confidently look
for an increase of advertising patronage. Unless mistaken
In our calculation*, our association with Mr. Mat, In con
nection with our arrangement*, which we are now tnak-
ing. will constitute the Georgian the best if hide for miner-
tismemte within their reach Wo oxpeot to send It, not
only Into every toum. village ami neightmrhood in Georgia, but
to every point in the neighboring States, which railroad
and steamboat have opened to the trade of the City,
Tiie feelings of pride with which Mr. Mat has for years
contemplated the progress of the Seaport of his nntivo
Bute, a feellog which ha* frequently found expression In
the column* of the Southern Democrat while under hi*
charge—is tho best assurance that nothing lie can do will
be wanting tn bring trade to Savannah—especially to those
whose advertisements uppoar In this paper. So that while
an agent for us he will at the same time he a most efficient
advocate, wherever he goes, of the Interests of tho City,
and of those of its business men whose names ap|>ear in
our columns.
Th* political principles of the Georgian will of course
continue to be those of the Democratic school; though
politics will play a part in its column* altogether subordi
nate to it* news, business and commercial character. To
its commercial department, especially, wilt the most assid
uous attention continue to ho given. Tho reputation which
it lias already established for tho accuracy, fullness and
clearness of its Cotton tables, cotton statements and mar
ket reports.lt shall be our endeavor to incroas* and extend.
Finally, as a medium through which to obtain the latest
Intelligence, the Georgian commends Itself to a very exten
sive region of Georgia, nearly the whole of Florida, and a
considerable portion ot South Carolina and Alabama. A
p»|«r published in this city can give foreign accounts, New
York and New Orleans cotton markets, and other telegraphic
re|>ort*. a day tn advance of our Charleston cnteinporarles.
To this wo may add. that in future, atcauuhips from New
York and Philadelphia will furnish us twice nr three times
each week. new*|iaper accounts from the North a day iu ad
vance of tho land mail.
