We hear of but a single case where tbe eflects of
the lightning was felt. The South-west corner of
the building occupied by the Sisters of Mercy, on
Liberty-street, was struck, melting tbe lightning rod
at the juncture—the fluid branched off and followed
the rod in a south-easterly and north-easterly direction,
where it descended one of the main rods to the lower
story, where it shattered t«o windows of the school
room in which were several childreu with their
instructresses, not one of whom however was iu.
jured, although every light in the two windows were
broken.
A negro man belonging to Mr. D. L. Cores, em
ployed on the new wing in course of erection to the
main building, was so sensibly affected by the fluid
as to temporarily lose the use of an arm.

atmosphere,’occasioned by this storm, will have

Western Atlantic Rollroail.
For tbe month of June, five thousand dollars front
the nett earnings of the Western A Atlantic Railroad
for that month, were paid into the State Treasury ;
aud for the month of July, twenty thousand dollars
were paid into the Treasury. This will l»e gratify ing
intelligence to the people, who have been .-o oiteu
told that the btate Road was a worthless piece of
property, and should be given away rather than be
held by tbe State. We are clearly convinced Irom
the foregoing facts, that with good management, the Glare
State Road will soou pay into the State treasury,
annually, from one to two hundred thousand do are.
We have believed, all tho time, that the State Road
could be made profitable, and when we opposed with
all our energies, all propositions belore the laG Leg
ialature to lease or sell it, we did not so soon expect
to see our arguments sustained, but confidently re
lieved that a few years of good management would
realize the full measure of our prophecies.
Wc find the foregoing statement in the FuUral
Union, aud are gratified at the prospect of the West
ern & Atlantic Road ceasing to be an expense to the
State. Yet considering that it has cost her between
five and six millions, the Unions prophecy that at
iome time, indefinitely futurc.it will pay into the
treasury '• annually, from one to two hundred thou
sand dollars,’’ does not seem to us to contemplate a
very brilliant result. Wc were of the much-abused
number who advocated a lease of the road, believing
that, like other public works, it would be more profit
ably worked by a private company than by the State,
yet we never dreamed of sceiug it leased for less than
from two hundred aud fifty to three huudred thousand
dollars. That it la, however, now more judiciously
managed than most State works of interna! improve
ment, we do not doubt. Our objection is not, aud
never has been, to the bands having control of it
but to the system of State managementa system
which, we believe, baa been found to work well no
where.

The Montgomery Journal states that Messrs. R. J.
Walker and T. Butler Kino, passed through that
place last Friday on their return from Texas. The
same paper informs us that the first meeting of the
Directors of the Pacific Railroad will lie held iu Mont
gomery on the first Monday of next December.
Tbe Houston Teltgraph, of August 19th. contains
the following letter from the above named gentle
men :
Houston, Aug. 17.
Muirs. James IV. Henderson, and others :
Gentlemen We have received your letter of this
date, requesting us, on behalf of the citizens of Hous
ton, to address them ou the subject of the Pacific
Railroad. Tbe contract for the construction of thi-
great work through Texas having been made by the
Company with which we are associated, and the Gov
ernor of your State, we .-ball proceed with all practi
cable energy aud dispatch until the road is complete J.
We have caused a complete instrumental survey to l*e
made by a competent Corps of Engineers, of the
whole route, at great expense, through Texas, nnd
westward to the pacific, and ascertained that the road
can be constructed upon easy grades, and but few
exceptions, thro’ a rich and beautiful country, to that
ocean. We have now several hundred liatul- ut work
under another corps of Engineers, grading the road
from tbe navigable waters of the Red River, near the
eastern boundary of Texas, which force will speedily
be augmented in number. We have a large body of pay
ing subscribers, whose number i- !*eiug augmented
every day, and every facility will be offered to tin-
people of Texas to take stock on the same terms as
the original subscribers.
Permit us to say that we have entered upon thi-
undertaking, the greatest of any age or country, und
which is destined to effect the last revolution in the
route of the commerce of the world, with no view
to any sale of the charter on speculation, but with a
fixed determination to devote our best energies to
the actual building of the road, until it shall he com
pleted.
In our letter of July hist, to the people ol Gonzales,
we expressed the opinion, which is confirmed by
subsequent observation, that tbe building ol th.-
great Central branch through your State, from tin-
waters of tho Mississippi to the Pacific, will lead,
necessarily and speedily, to variovs connection.- by
railway with your Gulf coast, us indispensable to the
entire success of the main work.
One of us, Mr. Walker, is prevented by hoarsem-—,
arising Irom a severe cold, from complying with your
request, and thus renewing his acquaintance with
his fellow-citizens of Houston, the place wh*-r*- In-
had the pleasure of addressing them immediately
after the recognition of their independence in 1-37
but Mr. King will address you at such time ami
place a- may suit your convenience, during the day.
Very resinjetfully, your lellow citizens,

The disease now among us. I regard as an eruptive

mination-arid if treated a-such, modifying the treat
ment to suit peculiar conditions and circumstances
of the patient, success would as certainly attend ef
fort.-* to combat till- fearful disease, as it would the
treatment ot scarlet lever, measles, erysipelas, Ac.—
Our citizens ure not alarmed at the announcement
that measles or any ol the eruptive fevers are uinong-t
us, and if they could divest themselves of the alnim
ai.d dread which so depress and crush down the
spirit- ami nervous energies, the disease would be
robbed of eight-tenths of it.- inalignauey. This dis'
ease,as it prevailed to a limited extent in 1852 in our
city, was marked by the same symptoms, progress,
and re-ults then, a- characterize it in the present epi
demic. Then I peicciveil in several cases which
cairn.- under my treatment, a distinctly marked elllo-

to he no analogous to the eruptive levers, I, ut that
time, expressed my belief that it tsfiongs to that
general fuinily, or das*, to one of my profesniouul
brethren. My plan of treatment then, ax no \, wus,
and i* according to the belief I entertained, uud thus
far 1 have hud no reason to regret its adoption.
A* to that treatment: Called to a patient having
all the other symptoms, my first object i* to superin

exist—by extensively nuntaidiziai’ the tui/arc—
where pepper can be obtained I prefer it to inu-tard,
a- the inflammation induced on the Mir luce by the
former is mote lusting. By this -jstem of external
medication, I have often had a distinct unmistakable
rash to muk<-it- appearance. The external plan of
treatment is kept up through the progress of the
disease. This revulsive plan is adopted by every en
lightened physician iu cases of rece-sioti of the erup-
*ive dinciisi***, und il they would but regard yilluU'
freer iu the same light, I verily believe the per rent-
age of the mortality would hu no greater in yellow
fever than in -earlet lever or measles. The eruptive
