nance tor enforcing tlie observance of tlie Sabbath,
isirei's liay." passed in Council lltli April. 1839.
Sec. 1. lie it ordained by tlie Major nud Alderman ol the
city of Savannah aud the hamlet' thereol iu Ceuucil as
sembled. nnd it is hereby ordained by the authority ol the
name. That from and alter the passage of this ordinance
every person who shall thereafter keep witliiu the city of
Savannah or tlie hamlets thereof, or it- extended jurisdlc
tioual limits, shop, store, bar room, tavern oyster house o
cellar, confectionery, eating house, porter, ale opbeer house
shall, on every Saturday night nt twelve o'clock, close and
keep shut Hie door or doors, nnd window or windows of
such shop, store, bar room, bar in a or uttached to a 1
ern. oyster house or cellar, confectionnry.eating house, i
ter.ale or beer house, until tho hour of twelve o'clock -
day night.
Sec. 2. Re it further ordaiued hy the authority aforesaid.
Hint no person whatsoever shall exchange, barter, sell
offeror expose for sale aftei twelve o’clock on every Satur
day night, and until twelve o'clock Sunday night, nuv goods,
wares, merchandize, fruits, herbs, malt, veinous or spiritu
ous liquors, or any other strong drink, nr any other things
whatsoever, except medicines, ice and milk.
Sec. 3. Be it further ordained by the authority aforesaid,
That if any person or persons shall violate any of the pro
visions of this ordinance, he. she or they shall, ujton con
viction thereof before the Dolice Court.be ficcd in a sum
not less than twenty dollars, nor more than one hundred
dollar* for each and every violation—one half of such fine
to be paid to the informer ; the other half into the City
Treasury.
Hoc. 4. Be it further enacted hy thu authority aforesaid.
That all ordinances or parts of ordinance* militating
against the provisions of this ordinance lie, ami the -ante
are hereby, repealed.
