nance for enforcing tlie observance of the Sabbath, or
laird’s Day," passed in Council llllt April. 1831).

city of.Savannah aud the humlota thereof In Council as
sembled. and it Is hereby ordained by thu authority of the
same, That from and ufter tho passage of this ordinance
every person who shall thereafter keep witlilu the eily of
Savannah or the hamlets thereof, or it* extended inrisdic
tional limits, shop, store, bar room, tavern, oyster house or
cellar, confectionery, eating house, porter, ala oi*l>eer house
shall, ou every Saturday night at twelve o'clock, closo und
keep shut the door or doors, and window or windows of
such shop, store, bur room, bur in a or attached to a tav
ern.oyster house or cellar, confectionary.eating house, por
ter.ale or beer house, until the hour of twelve o'clock Sun
day night.
Seo. 3. Be it further ordained by the authority aforesaid.
That no person whatsoever shall exchange, barter, sell or
offer or expose for sale aftei twelve o’clock ou every Satur
day night, and until twelve o'clock Sunday night, any good*,
wares,^-merchandize, fruits, herb*, malt, veinnus or spiritu-
ou* liquor*, or any other strong drink.or any other thing*
whatsoever, except medicine*, ice and milk.
Sec. 3. Be it further ordained by tlie authority aforesaid.
That if any person or persons shall violate anv of the pro
visions of this ordinance, hr. she or thev shall, upon con
viction thereof before the Police Uourt.be tic.ed in a sum
not less than twenty dollar*, nor more than one hundred
dollars for each and every violat on—one half of such fine
to be paid to the informer ; tho other half into the City
Trea*ury.
Sec. 4. Re it further enacted by the authority aforesaid.
That all ordinances or parts of ordinances militating
againit the provisions of this ordinance l>e, and the same
are horeby. repealed

Sec. 3 Be it further ordained, That no tradesman, labor
er. or other person whatsoever, shall do or exercise any la -
bor or business ol their ordinary calling on tho Lord's Day.

property of the owner of said cook shop or retailer of li
quors. tho marshal or constables may enter the premises
and take such negroes to jail, ami the person or person*
an harboring or entertaining such negroes, shall be lined
in a sum not exceeding thirty dollars

P ROPOSALS will bo received at this Department until
the first day of Augu*t next, for the complete con
struction of steam machinery and appendages, and plac
ing ft on board of five auxiliary screw steam frigates, to
bo at least 256 feet in length, and 3.000 tuns measurement,
oue of which is building at each of the United States uuvy
yards at Boston. New York, and Philadelphia, and two at
Norfolk.
Each offer must lie for a specific sum. and nclude all
patent fees for any arrangement thatmay be iiroposed.and
t state the period in which tho work can be completed
iu boilers are to be of iron, witli telescope chimneys;
the propeller, with the connexions for hoisting up. of com-
liosition. The fresh water condenser*, machinery fur hoist-
ng. ventilating, pumps. Ac . with appurtenances of all
kinds, must be those most approved for marine engines.
The tools gnd duplicate pieces necessary for an efficient
cruising slfip-of-war. a list of which most accompany tlie
proposal, and ulso the coal bunkers, must be Included.
All tlie wood and carpenter work necessary to adapt the
vessel for the reception of the engines, boilers propeller*.
&c..will be at the expense of the Navy Department.and it
will furnish the usual facilities and labor for hoisting the
machinery on board.
For the accommodation of the entire steam macliinerj
with fuel lor ten days’ consumption, at the average speed.at
a load draft nf water of 23 feet including tlie keel a length
not exceeding 00 foet can be allowed in the body of the
ship, including tlie entire space under the berth deck. Tlie
greatest breadth of this space under the beam will be 47
feet, and the height from tlie timbers to the bottom or the
bean) 17 feet; the area of the section being 002 squnre
feet.
The weight of all tho steam machinery, water in the
