nance for enforcing tlie observance of the Sabbath, or
laird’s Day.’’ passed in Council 11th April, 1839.
Sec. I. lie it ordained by the Major and Alderman of tlie
city of Savannah and tlie hamlets thereof in Council
sembled. and it is hereby ordained by tlie authority of the
same, That from and utter the passage of thia ordinance
every person who shall thereafter keep within the city of
Savannah or tlie hamlet* thereof, or it- extended jurisdic
tional limits, shop, store, bar room, tavern, oyster bouse or
cellar, confectionery, eating house, porter, ale or beer house,
shall, on every Saturday night at twelve o’clock, close ami
keep shut tlie door or doors, ami window or windows of
such shop, store, liar room, bar iu a or attached to u tav
ern, oyster house or cellar, confectionary, eating house, [sir-
tcr.ale or beer house, until (lie linin' of twelve o'clock Sun
day night
Sec. 2. He it further ordained by tlie authority aforesaid.
That uo person whatsoever shall exchange, barter, sell or
offeror expose for sale aftei twelve o'clock on every Satur

wares, merchandize, fruit*, herb*, malt.veluou* or’spiritu-
ous liquors, or any other *trong drink.or any oilier tilings
whatsoever, except mediciues. ice and milk.

trance be refused, then tho said Marshall and Constables

quors. the marshal or constables may enter the premises
and take such negroes to jail, and the fieroon or person?

P BOPOSAfoS will be received at this Department until
tbo first day of August next, for tlie complete con
struction of steam machinery and appendage*, nud plac
ing it on board of five auxiliary screw steam frigates, to
be at least 265 feet iu length, and 3.000 tuns measurement,
one of which is building at each of tlie United States navy
yards at Boston. New York, and Philadelphia, and two at
Norfolk.
Each offer must bo for a specific sum. and nclude all
patent Ices for any arrangement that may be proposed, aud
must statu tlie |ieriod in which tlie work can be completed
The boilers are to lie of Iron, witli telescope chimneys;
tlie propeller, witli tlie connexions for hoisting up. of com
position. The fresh wnter condensers, machinery for hoist
ing. ventilating, pumps. Ac., with appurtenances of all
kinds, must be those most approved for marine engiues.
The tools and duplicate pieces necessary for au efficient
cruising ship-of-war. a list of which must accompany the
proposal, and also the coal bunkers, must be included.
All the wood nnd carpenter work necessary to adapt the
vessel for the reception of the engines, boilers propellers.
Ac . will be at tlie expense of the Navy Department, and it
will furnish the usual facilities and labor for hoisting tlie
machinery on board.
For the accommodation of the entire steuiu machinery
with fuel lor ten days’ consumption, nt the average speed, at
a load draft of water of 23 feet Including the keel a length
not exceeding 00 feet can be allowed in tlie body of the
ship, including the entire space under the berth-deck. Tlie
greatest breadth of this spaco under the t eam will be 47
feet.and the height from tlie timbers to the bottom or tlie
beam 17 feet; tlie nren of tlie section being 662 square
feet.
The weight of nil tlie stems machinery, water iu tlie
boilers and coal within tlie space given, and including tlie
propeller and shaft, with appendages of nil kinds nnd spare
piece*, lias been estimated nt 735 tons, of 2.240 pounds, of
which 360 tons is for coni.
The distance between, tlie main stern post aiiiltlie rud
der-post may be six feet, if that lengtli is necessary for Hie
propeller in a fore and-aft direction, and Hie depth from
Hie load water line to the top of tlie keel under the propell
er will be 21 feet. The length from the mainmast to the
stern-post will be about 112 feet. The area of tliegreatcsl
immersed transversed section to the deep load line will lie
805 square feet.
As auxiliary steam frigates tlie spars and rigging will be
those of n frigate of the first class, of 1.800 tuns measure
ment.
Ti c particular arrangement of tlie machinery will be
left with those whose propositions may be accepted ns com
bining tlie greatest number of advantages ; tlie desire of
the department being to obtain tha greatest speed nnd
power with tlie most economical consumption of fuel
which the space available for that purpose will admit.
Tlie terms of payment will be as follows : when one-third
of the work provided for by tlie contract shall have been
completed to tlie satislactiou of the department, there
shall be n payment of one-fiftli of tlie whole amount of
thecontract; when two-thirds of tlie work shall, in like
mnnner,be completed, there shall bo a further payment of
one fifth ; when the ship shall lmve made a trial trip, sat
isfactory to the department, ol not less Ilian one week at
sea. there shall be a further pAvmentnf one-fifth : and
when the ship shall have been in tlie possession outlie de
partment. and performed satisfactorily for six month*, the
remaining sum shall be paid ; Hie repairs necessary during
this period, from defective workmanship nnd material, be
