•x Deaths from Diseases other than Yellow
Fever.
A correspondent of| tho Chronicle 4* Sentinel hav
ing criticised much to his own satisfaction, Dr. Wild-
man’s treatment of yellow fever, in tho conclusion
of his communication, turns upon the health reports
daily published in this city, as follows :
While upon this subject, may we not be permited to
ask some of our medical friends, or Editors of Savan
nah, to explain the fact, that in their reduced popu
lation the deaths from diseases other thau yellow
fever, are so frightfully numerous—four, five, six
and sometimes nino per day are thus reported, be
sides yellow fever cases? Wo presumo that tho
average of deaths from other diseases, reported dur
ing the last ten days, will not fall short of six per
day. If there waa no yellow fever, and tho entire
population waa at homo, this mortality would bo
alarming. We assure our Savannah friends that this
remarkable feature in their reports excites ninny
comments, and the faithfulness ol tho reports of their
Board of Health, can ouly be admitted upon the sup
position that their city is one of the most unhealthy
in tbe Union. If there is any other explanation the
public would be pleased to have it. We would sug
gest one ourselves, founded upon onr own observation
In 1839, but the subject would be a delicate one, and
we forbear. H,
We aay nothing ol the heart of him who at a time
when thii city is overwhelmed with calamity, can
revel in Insinuations calculated to cut her oB from
the sympathies to which her sufferings would seem
to give her so just a claim ; sympathies which she
never withheld from others in like affliction. Wo on
ly ask, what conceivable motive could prompt our
physicians and authorities, now when it is notorious
that yellow fever is prevailing among us with fearful
mortality, to attribute to other diseases deaths caus
ed by this epidemic? As regards tho physicians,
there ia certainly no malady by which a patient could
die that would bring less discredit upon the practi
tioner than this. Is there not then, a strong tempta
tion to him, if unprincipled, to report his cases as
having died of yellow fever, rather than a more cura-
bl# affection ? As to the authorities, their tempta
tion, if disposed to consult policy rather than truth,
ia assnredly in tbe same direction. No body denies
that yellow fever is here, and here as an epidemic.
Whatever character the city could loso by Us pres
ence, is lost already—gone for years. If then we
would preserve her reputation for general health (so
InvaJoable to every place of business,) the effort of
the authorities, manifestly should be, to report every
death which happens as caused by the epidemic.
We venture to say that there is not a business man
in Savannah who would not wish that each of the
one hundred and twenty-three persous intered du
ring the week jast ended, could be reported as having
died of this disease. But such a report would be in
the face of truth. Hence we are compelled to state
fifty-one of the one hundred and twenty-three died ol
" other diseaseseven though the statement should
bring upon onr city the discredit of being “ one of the
most unhealthy places in the Union.''
If this reply, which iH intended more for the pub-
lie than for “ H.” bo not satisfactory to that gentle
man, we beg leave to address him directly as follows:
You are a physician. Augusta is now remarkably
healthy, lhe iaculty of Savannah, worn out by in-
scssant labors, are unable to give that attention to
the sick, which their numbers require. You haven
more efficacious remedy for our epidemic than the
best which has been employed here. You wish toss-
certain why “ deaths from diseases other than yellow
fever, are bo frightfully numerous.” Will you not
then como down, bring with you your remedies and
obtain the knowledge which you ho anxiously seek,
and which neither your 14 medical friends nor tbe
editors of Savannah,” can give. Our word for it. you
will be received with open arms. You will neither
want patients upon whom to try your remedies, nor
any means of obtaining information possessed by the
city, or its authorities. Will you accept this invitation
so cordially given ?
Wbatukr and Crocs.—The Atlanta Examiner,
of the 2d, sayB : We havo just returned from a short
visit to the counties of Monroe and Mcrriwcthcr.—
While absent we made many enquiries concerning
the crops and their probable yield. From our obser
vation, backed by competent opinions, we sre im
pressed with tbe belief that there will be plenty of
corn made to meet the necessities ol tbe people-
consequently there need be no fear of perishing in
that aectlon for tho next year; yet, the crop is not
so bountiful but our farmers will be forced to practice
a very wise economy in reference to the use of bread-
stuffs.
We are happy to learn Irani a friend, renidiug in
the county of Gwinnett, that there lias been sufficient
rain in the counties of Gwinnett, Hall, Walton and
Habersham, to save the crops in those counties.

Abundanuk ok Wheat.—The Richmond, Va.,

of them is literally groaning under the weigh! of
its contents, and the writer thinks he 14 saw enough

that city, and two oi them grind at least nine hun

is a favorite over all others. The climate does not
sour it, and the secret is said to consist in packing it
while it is hot.

Indian Corn.
A French farmer bos succeeded in giving to Maize
or Indian Corn any color lie chooses, hy the following
plan :
Having received from China a specimen of a pearl
white color, the grains of which were very small hut
very beautiful, he was desirous to obtain the name
grain but of other colors. For this purpose, lie plan
ted by the side of some of tbe American maize of a
red color, aud tbe result was a crop of grain of a pink
tint, with some of a bloeish, and others ofgrecncolnr.
He made a similar experiment with the maize of
Tosavora, the grain of which is as white uh Carolina
rice, and he thus obtained a crop, the rare of which
were about 14 Inches in length, and the grain* of a
blue color. Another time lie planted some maize of
tbe color of amber among some ol tbe black maize
ofByrla. Tbe ears attained the length of 22 inches,
aud tbe grain was or differeut colors. The yellow
maize on being planted near somo of the brown maize
of Central America, produced some dark brown color
which ripens eight days sooner than the other sorts.
Tbe farmer uow poaseaaes one handrud and flftv-
three different varieties of malto, and his object in
coatlnulng bis experiments Is not only to change tbe
color at will, but also to obtain varieties which will
ripsn earlier,as welt as largsr and longer ears, and
thus Increase tbe produce.

indeed, very few nre thu diseases in
which a purgative medicine is not
more or less required, and much sickness and suffering
might he prevented, if a harmless hut effectual cathartic
were more freely need. No person can feel well while a
costive habit of body prevails ; besides it soon generates
serious and often fatal diseases, which might have been
avoided by the timely and judicious use of a good purga
tive. This is alike true of colds, feverish symptoms, and
bilious derangements. They all tend to become or produce
the deep seated and formidable distempers which load the
hearses all over the land. Hence a reliable family physic
is of the first importance to tho public liealtb, and this pill
lias been perfected with consummate skill to meet that de
mand. An extensive trial of its virtues by physicians, pro
fessors, and jiaticnts, has shown results surpassing any
thing hitherto known of any medicine. Cures have been
effected beyond tielief. were they not substantiated hy per
sons of such exalted position and character as to forbid the j
suspicion of untruth
Among tho many eminent gentlemen who have testified
in favor of theso Fills, we may mention :
Dr. A. A. Hayes. Analytical Chemist of Boston, and State
Assayer of Massachusetts, whose high professional charac
ter is endorsed by the—
Hon. Filward Everett. Senator ot the United States.
Robert C. Wlntbrop, K* Speaker of the House of Repre
sentatives.
Abbot texvrenee. Minister I’len. to England.
tJohn II. Fitzpatrick, Catholic Bishop of Boston ; also.
Dr. J. R. Chilton, Practical Chemist of Now York City,
endorsed by
Hon. W. L. Marcy, Secretary of State.
Wm. B. Astor. tbe richest man in America.
S. I .eland fc Co., proprietors of the Metropolitan Hotel,
and othera.
Did space permit, we could give many hundred certificates
from all parts where the Fills have been used, but evidence
even more convincing than the experience of eminent pub
lie men. is found in tlieir effects upon trial.
These Fills, the resultof long investigation and study, are
offered to the public as tlie best aud most complete which
tlie present state of medical science can afford They nre
compounded not of the drugs themselves, but of the med
icinal virtues only ofVegctable 4 rem dies extracted by chem
ical process in a stato of purity, and combined together in
such a manner as to insure the best results. This system
of com|K)*ition for medicines has lieen found in tbe Clierry
Fectoral and Fills both, to produce a more efficient reme
dy than had hitherto been obtained by any process. The
roason is perfectly obvious. While by tlie old mode of
composition, every medicine is burdened with more or less
of acrimonious qualities, by this each individual virtue
only that is desired for the curative effect is present. All
tho inert and obnoxious qualities of encli substance em.
ployed are left behind, the curative virtues only being re
tained. Hence it is self-evident the effects should prove as
they hax'o proved more purely remedial, aud the Fills a
surer, more powerful antidote to disease than any other
medicine known to the xvorld.
As it is frequently expedient that my medicines should
be taken under tho counsel of on attending Physician, and
as hecouldnotproperlyjudgeofa remedy xvitbout knowing
its composition. 1 have supplied tho accurate Formula; by
which both my Fectoral and Fills nre made to the whole
body of Practitioners In the United States nnd British
American Provinces. If however there should be any one
who has not received them, they will be promptly forward
ed by mail to bin request.
Of all the Patent Medicines that are offered, how few
would be taken if their composition was known ! Their
lire consists in their mystery. I have no mysteries.
The composition of my preparations is laid open to all
men, and nil xvho are competent to judge on the subject
freely acknoxvledge their convictions of theiriutrinsic mer
its. The Cherry Pectoral was pronounced by scientific men
to be a woderful meoicine before ita effects were knoxvn.
Many eminent Physicians havo declared the same thing ol
mv Fills, and even more confidently, and are willing to cer
tify that their anticipations were more than realized by
tlieir effects upon trial.
They operate by their powerful influence on the internal
viscera to purify the blood and stimulate it into healthy
action—remove the obstructions of the stomach, bowels,
liver, and other organs of lhe body, restoring their irregu
lar action to health, and by correcting, wherever they ex
ist. such derangements as are the first origin of disease.
