That no persou whatsoever shall exchange, barter, sell or
offeror expose for sale nftei twelve o'clock on every Satur

wares, merchandize, fruits, herbs, malt, veinous or spiritu
ous liquor*, or any other strong drluk.or any other thiug*
whatsoever, except medicines, ice and milk.
Sec. 3. Bo it further ordained by the authority aforesaid,
That if any person or persons slinll violate any of the pro
visions of this ordinance, lie. she or they shall, upoti con
viction thereof before tho Police Court, lie 11 tod in it sum
not less than twenty dollars, nor more than one hundred
dollars tor each and every violation—one half of such line
to be paid to the informer: the otbor half into the City
Treasury.
Sec. 4. Be it further enacted by the authority aforesaid.
That all ordinances or parts of ordinances militating
against tho provision* of this ordinance be, and the same
are hereby, repealed.

Sec. 2 Be itfurthor ordained. That no tradesman, labor
er. or other person whatsoever, shall do or exorcise any In
bur or business ot their ordinary cnlling on the lord’s Day,
(works of necessity, charity and the absolute and necessa
ry avocations of the tatnily excepted.) and every |icr-ion of
the age of discretion, or lllteen years and onwards, offend
ing herein, shall tor every such offence be liable to aline
not exceeding thirty dollars.
Sec 4. Bolt further ordained, that no wagoner, carter,
draymen, butcher or drover, or their servant, servants, or
other persons whatsoever, shall ply about theclty or ham
lets thereof, with their wagons,carts or drays, nor load or
uuloadany goods, wares, merchandize or produce, except
the baggage of pnsseogers, nor drive cattle, sheep or swine
within the jurisdiction of tho satno on the lord’s Day. or
any part thereof, under tho penalty of a tine not cxccdtng
thirty dollars for each and every such offence.
Sec. 5 Be it further ordained. &c.. That no vessel, boat,or
water craft of any kind whatever, shall be allowed to load
or unload at any of the wharves or docks of the city or Hie
hamlets thereof, on tho Lord’s Day. cases ol imminent dan-

r negroes tor the purpose of suppressing the same, and
pprehendingtho offenders, and iu case admittance or en
trance bo refused, then the said Marshall and Constables
are required to apply to the Mayor or either of the Aider-
men.or to any Magistrate of tiie city, for a warrant nr
order to break open any of the doors of the said house or
enclosure, and enter therein, and any person or persons
, ho shall refuse entrance to the officers aforesaid, shall
l or every such offence be liable to a fine not exceeding thir

Sec. 9, Be it further ordained, If there aliail be found in
the shop or enclosure of any retailer of spirituous liquors,
or any negro cook shop within the jurisdictional limits of
the city, on the Lord's Day. any negro or negroes not the
qiortv of the owner of said conk shop or retailer of li
quors, tlie marshal or constables may enter the premises
and tuke sucli negroes to jail, and the person or person*
so harboring or entertaining such negroes, shall he fined
in a sum not exceeding thirty dollars.
Sec. 11. Be it further ordained, That no person shall lie
prosecuted or molested for any oilenco contained iu tills
ordinance, unless such prosecution is commenced within
thirty days after the offence was committed.

P UOl’OSAIoS will be received at this Department until
the first day of August next, for tho complete con
struction of steam machinery and apjiendages, and plac
ing it on hoard of live auxiliary screw steam frigates, to
be at least 265 feet in length, and 3.000 tuns measurement,
one or which is building at each of tho United 8totei; navy
yards at Iloston. New York, and I’hiludelphia. nnd two at
Norfolk.

patent fees for any arrangement that may be proposed, and

The boilers aro to be of iron, with telescope chimneys;
tlio propeller, with tho connexions for hoisting up. of com
position. The fresh water condensers, machinery for hoist
ing. ventilating, pumps. Ac., with appurtenances of nil
kinds, must be those most approved for marine engines.
The tools and duplicate pieces accessary for an efficient
cruising ship-of-war. a list of which must accompany the
proposal, and also the coal bunkers, must he included.
All the wood and carpenter work necessary to adapt the
vessel for the reception of the engines, boilers propellers.
Ac., will be at the expense of the Navy Department.and it
will furnish the usual facilities and labor for hoisting the
machinery on board.
F'or the accommodation of tho entire steam machinery
with fuel for ten days’ consumption, at the average speed, at
a load draft of water of 23 feet including the keel n length
not exceeding 00 feet cun bo allowed in tho body of the
fillip, including tlio entire spuco under thu berth-deck. The
greatest breadth of this space under the I,earn will be 47
feet, and the height (ruin the timbers to the bottom or tlio
beam 17 feet; the nrea of the section being662square
feet.
Tho weight of nil tho steam machinery, water in the
boilers nnd coal within the space given, ami including the
propeller and shaft, with appendages of all kinds and spare
pieces, has been estimated ut 735 tons, of 2.240 |>ouiids. of
which 350 tons is for coal.
The distance between the main stern post and the rud
der-post may he six feet, if that length is necessary for the
propeller in ii fore and-aft direction, nnd the depth from
the load water line to tho top of the keel under the propell
er will bo 21 feet. Tho length from the mainmast to tlio
stern-post will bo about 112 feet. The area of the greatest
immersed transversed section to the deep loud line will be
805 square feet.
As auxiliary steam frigates the spars and rigging will be
tlioso of a frigate of the first class, of 1,800 tuns measure-
lent.
particular arrangement of the machinery will be
left with those whose propositions may bo accepted as com
bining the greatest number of advantages ; the desire of
tlio department being to obtain tha greatest speed nnd
power with thu most economical consumption of fuel
which the space available tor that purpose will admit.
Tho terms of payment will be as follows : when one-third
of the work provided for by the contract shnll have been
completed to the satisfaction of the department, there
shall be a payment of one-fifth of the whole amount of
tho contract; when two-thirds of the work shnll. in like
manner, he completed, there shall be a further payment of
one fifth ; when tlio ship shall have made a trial trip, sat
isfactory to the department, ol not less than one week at
sea, there shall be a further payment of one-flflh ; nnd
when tlio ship shall have been in tlio possession outlie de
