Anethtr Noble Vlcttia—Dr. Stephen N. Har
ris.
We resume our editorial labor* only tu time tu an-
uounce the death of oar much esteemed physician,
the gifted, devoted, high-minded and noble-hearted
Stephen N. Harris ! On Friday of last week, bra
ving the merciless storm he twice presented bimscll
at our bedaide, remarking on tho second visit, it wc
remember the number rightly that he bad then made
between seventy and eighty calls during the day—
and was still going. Saturday wc agaiu saw him and
received hia prescription: but never afterwards. The
first intelligence on Sunday was that he had beeu
stricken down by the epidemic. Utterly worn out
and exhausted by bis struggles with the disease in
its attacks upon others, no wonder when it assailed
himself be fell an easy victim to the violence of the
destroyer.
Dr. Harris could not have been much, if any, over
thirty years of age. So large a practice nod so envi
able a professional repututatiou os were his, arc
hardly paralleled in the case of one of liis year*. And
no one will contend that either was not legitimately
acquired. To the arts by which Email men force
themselves into high places no one could bo a great
er stranger. Alas who shall supply his place ?
We have neglected to say that Dr. Harris, was a
native of Liberty County in this State, where he
l&arried and where his father still resides.

The steamer Gov. Dudley, Cupt. Crowell, was dea-
K itched at 2 o’clock yesterday morning, by Messrs.
ordecai and Co. Agents, to sea, in order to afiord
assistance to wrecked vessels on tho coast. Arrived
at Bull’s Bay, at 7, a. m., where was found the schr.
Caroline Hail, from New York for a port in Florida.
Offered the captain our assistance which was declin
ed, hu stating that he hud sent for two lighters and
anchors. She lies ashore some distance up in the
marsh.
Returned to sea, and about teu miles from shore
discovered the schr. Jane, from Baltimore for Nassau
dismasted iu the gale of the 8th. Took tier to tow,
aud brought her to the city.
Soon after falling in with the Jane, discovered a
wreck at some distance, which was run for, and found
to be the schr. Dirigo, Gordon master, Irom Jackson
ville, Fla., for Washington, P.C., loaded with lumber,
waterlogged and dismantled lu the gale of the 8th.—
Took from her Capt. Gordon and crew, who were in
a must einacinuted c< udition, having bad nothing to
subsist on for six days, their water and provisions
having been swept away by the gale. They were so
helpless as to have to be lilted in and out or the boat,
but by the cautious administrutiou of nourishment
they were soon comparatively restored—Charleston

Railroad Accident.—We received no westfrn
mail yesterday, in consequence, as wc learn, of the
night train from this city for Augusta having, about
three o’clock yesterday morniug, ubout eight miles
on this side ot Augusta, near Marsh’s Turn Out, run
iuto a culvert which, unknown to the engineer, had
been injured. The engineer, Captain Robinson, wits
seriously if not fatally injured, baviug beeu caught
between the engine and tender. Oue of the firemen
was also injured, but very slightly. Tno of the
freight cars were entirely demolished. Tho road be
ing blocked up, the mail train from Augusta return
ed, having transferred a portion of its passengers to
the night express train, which proceeded with an un
glue taken from the regular Ircight train to this city,
where it arrived at a quarter after nine o'clock last
evening. Tho only muil received was one letter
bag. Capt. Robinsou, wc learn, woa taken back to
Augusta. The engine was imbedded in the culvert
some ten or twelve feet, where it remained when tho
the trains left tho Turn Out.—CA. Courier, 12/A.
Safety of the I’asaengera and Crew of the
Slltp Dellu Marin.
Tho Charleston papers mention with much satis
faction the fact that the passengers and crew of this
ship apont whom so much anxiety was felt are all
safe. Wc take the following from the Standard of
the 14th inat:
Capt. Pearce and Mr. Trcnholm arrived in the city
yesterday with the glad tidings that every soul was
saved on board the ill-fated ship Delia Maria, whose
loss we noticed yesterday. We learn that the vessel
went ashore about two o’clock on Friday afternoon.
After remaining on board some twentv-four hours,
and being found impossible to do any thing with her,
theaurf running very high and the vessel threatening
to not hold oat mucb longer, the officers aud crew
deemed it advisable to abandon her. Every person
on board waa placed io the three boats belonging to
tbo ship, and eventually succeeded in landing in
•afety on Hilton’a Head, from whence they walked
to the nearest plantation. Mach difficulty was ex
perienced in saving two of the passengers who were
very aged persona. Capt. Pearce and Mr. Trenholm
were sent in ti small boat to Savannah, and arrived
in this city yesterday afternoon. The remainder ot
those who were on board probably went to Beaufort
and may be expected hero to-day by the boat from
that place.

Entrancing sound tlmt hither floats :
Tho echo of a distant strain,
Of hnrps’and voices' blended notes,
Beyond the river.
There «r« our loved ones In their vest-,
They’ve crossed Time's River—now no mon
They heed the buble* on It* breast,
Nor feel the storms that sweep its shore.
But there pure love can live, can last—
They look for us their home to share;
What joyful greetlugs wait us there
Beyond the river.
There are few things which afford us greater pleasure
than aittlng down to write a notice ot the celebrated Hook-

are conferring a public benefit, and our heart tells us that
by our notices many have been induced to take these flit
ters, and been rescued from death by Dyspepsia, Liver

We see by the Court Records, that tlio two counterfeit
ers. White of Rulfalo. and lawrence of Kpplng. N. If.,
have been placed under ten thousand dollar bonds each
for making and selling imitations of Aykk's Cherry Pec
toral. This i* right. If tiie Law should protect ineu from
imposition at ail.it should certainly protect them from
being imposed upon by a worthless counterfeit of such a
medicine as Ayer's Cherry Pectoral. Wo can only com-
plain that tho punishment I* not half enough. Tho villain
who would for paltry gaiu. deliberately trifle with tiie
health ol his fellow man, by lakiug from their lips the cup
of hope, when they are sinking, and substituting a false
hood—an utter delusion, shoul bo punished st loast at
severely us lie who counterfeits tlio coin of the country.

Tho Protector ” is simply a chemicn’ly prepared fur,

“ The Protector." although but recently introduced into

for a long time been a staple urticlo in England ami ou the

to the position of an article of dress.
To demonstrate theoe facts enquire of any Engliah resi

A new and singularly successful
remedy for the cure of nil bilious dis
eases—costiveness.indigestion drop
sy, jauudice, rheumatism, fevers,
gout, humors, nervousness. Irrita
bility, inflammations, pains in the
breast, side, back and limbs, head
ache. female complaints, etc..etc.;
indeed, very few nre tiie diseases in
which a purgative medicine Is not
more or lest required, and much sickness nnd suffering
might tie prevented, if a harmless but effectual cathartic
vteve more freely used. No person can feel well while
costive habit of body prevails; besides it soon generates
serious and often fatal diseases, which might have been
avoided by tiie timely and jndicious use of a good purga
tive. Tills is alike true of colds, feverish symptoms, and
blliou* derangements. They all tend to become or produce
the deep seated and formidable distempers which load tiie
hearses all over the land. Hence a reliable family physic
is of tiie first importance to tiie public health, and this pill
lias been perfected witli consummate skill to meet that de
mand. An extensive trial of its virtues by physician*, pro
fessor*. and patients, lias shown results surpassing any
thing hitherto known of any medicine. Cure* havo been
effected beyond belief, were they not substantiated by per
son* of such exalted position and character as to forbid the
suspicion of untruth
Among the many eminent gentlemen who hare testified
in favor of these Pills, wc may mention :
Dr. A. A. llaye*. Analytical Chemist of Boston, and State
Assayer of Massachusetts, whose high professional charac
ter Is endorsed by the—
Hon. Edward Everett. Senator ot the United States.
Robert C. Wlnthrop, Ex Speaker of the House of Repre
sentatives.
Abbot Lawrence, Minister Plen. to England.
tJohn It. Fitzpatrick, Catholic Bishop of Boston ; also,
Dr. J. R. Chilton, Practical Chemist of New York City,
endorsed by
Hon. W. L. Marcy, Secretary of State.
Wm. B. Astor. the richest man in America.
S. I/eland ft Co., proprietors of tiie Metropolitan Hotel,
and others.
Did space pe-mit. we could give many hundred certificates
from ail part* w here the l’itls have been used, but evidence
oven more convincing than the experience of eminent pub
lic men. is found in their effects upon trial.
These Pill*, the result of long investigation ami study, are
offered to tiie public as the best and most complete which
the present state of medical science can afford They are
comjKiunded not of the drugs themselves, but of tiie med
icinal virtues only ofVegetable, ren> diesextmeted bv chem
ical process in a state of purity, and combined together in
such a manner as to insure the best results. This system
of composition for medicines has been found lu the Cherry
Pectoral and Pills both, to produce a more efficient reme-
dy than had hitherto been obtained by any process. The
reason is perfectly obvious. Wliilo 'by tlio old mode of
composition, every medicine is burdened with more or less
of acrimonious qualities, by this each Individual virtue
only that is desired for the curative effect is present. All
tlio inert and obnoxious qualities of each substance em
ployed are left behind, the curative virtues only being re
tained. Hence it is self-evident the effects should prove as
they have proved more purely remedial, and the. Pill* a
surer, more powerful antidote to disease than any other
medicine known to the world.
As it is frequently expedient that my medicine* should
bo taken under the counsel of an attending Physician, and
a* he could not properly judge of a remedy without knowing
its composition. 1 have supplied the accurate Formula* by
which botli my Pectoral and Pill* are made to the whole
body of Practitioners in the United State* and British
American Province*. If however there should be any one
who has not received them, they will be promptly forward
ed by mail to his request.
Of all tlio Patent Medicine* that are offered, how few
would be taken If their composition was known ’ Tlieir
life consists in their mystery. I have no mysteries.
The comnosition of iny preparations is laid open to nil
men, and all who nre competent to judge on the subject
freely acknowledge their conviction* of theirintrin*ic mer
its. The Chony Pectoral was pronounced by scientific men
lo be a wodert'ul meaicine before its effects were known.
Many eminent Physicians have declared the same tiling of
my Pills, and even more confidently, and are willing to cer
tify that their anticipations were more than realized by
their effects upon trial.
They operate by their powerful influence on the internal
viscera to purify tho blood and stimulato it into healthy
action—remove the obstructions of the stomach, bowel*,
liver, and other organs of the body, restoring their irregu
lar action to health, ami by coTrectmg, wherever they ex
ist. such derangements ns are the first origin of diseoso.
