Hec. 1. Beit ordained by the Ma)oraml Alderman of the
city of .Savannah uml the hamlets theieol in Council as
sembled. and it is hereby ordained by Hit) authority of the
same, That from and after the passage of this ordinance
every person who shall thereafter keep within the city of
Huvminuli or the hamlets thoretff. or its extended jurisdic
tional limits, shop, store, bar room, tavern, oyster bouse or
cellar, confectionery, eating house, |xirter.ule or beer house,
shall, on every Saturday night at twelve o'clock, close ami
keen shut tho door or doors, and window or windows of

ter,ale or beer house, until the hour

Hec. 2. Be it further ordained by the authority aforesaid,
Thai no person whatsoever shall exchange, barter, sell or
offeror expose for sale nftei twelve o'clock on every Satur

wares, merchandise, fruits, herbs, mult.vciuou* or spiritu
ous liquors, or any other strong drink,or any other tilings
whatsoever, except medicines, ice nnd milk.
Hec. 3. Be it further ordained by the authority aforesaid.
That if any person or persons shall violate any Of the pro
visions of this ordinance, he. she or they shall, iiikiii con
viction thereof before thu Pollen Court, be I'u.ed lu a sum
not less than twenty dollars, nor more than one hundred
dollars tor each and every violation—one hall of such line
to be paid to the informer ; the other half into the City
Treasury.
Sec. 4. lie It further enacted by the authority aforesaid.
That all ordinances or parts of ordinances militating
against the provisions of tiffs ordinance be, and tlm same
are hereby, repealed.

er. or other person whatsoever, shall do or exercise any la
bor or business of their ordinary calling on the Lord’* Day,

the age of discretion, or til teen years and upwards, offend

water craft of any kind whatever, shall be allowed to load
or unload at any of tho wharves or docks of tho city or the
hamlets thereof, on the Lord’s Day. eases ol imminent dan
ger or urgent necessity only excepted, under the penalty of
a line not exceeding thirty dollars.
Sec. 0. Bo it further ordained. Are . That no tavern keep
er. innkeepes or other person keeping any house of enter
tainment. slinll suffer any feasting, drinking, gaiming. riot-
ingor other disorderly nnd indecent conduct whatsoever,
on the Lord's Day, within their houses, out houses oren-
closures, uuder the penalty of a line not exceeding thirty
dollars f#r each ami every such offence.
Hec. 7. Be it further ordained Are., that no public s|mrts
or pastimes, asbear-bntliig. bull-bating, horse-racing, rill
ing race horses through the streets of the city, or for ex
ercise from stables, foot-ball, shooting, hunting or fishing,
interludes or plays, -lancing, singing, fiddling, or other
music for the sake of meriumnt. or anv otliersports or pas
times or disorderly conduct whatsoever, shall Is- use-1 on

nance. anil to enter into any public house, tippling house,
dramshop, negro cook shop, or other house or enclosure
wherein they heir any riot, noise, or indecent behavior,
wherein they suspect any assembly of disorderly person*
negroes for the purpose of suppressing the same, ami
appreheudingthe offenders, ami in case admittance or en
trance bo refuse-1, then the said Marshall ami Constables
are required to apply to the Mayor or either of the Alder
men.or to any Magistrate of the city, fur a warrant nr
order to break open any of the -heirs of the snid house or
enclosure, uml enter tlierein, nnd any person or persons
who shall refuse entrance to the officers aforesaid, shall
for every such offence he lialde to a fine not exceeding thir
ty dollars.
Sec. 9. U-* it further ordained. If then 1 shall he found in
the shop or enclosure of any retailer of spirituous liquors,
or any negro cook shop within the jurisdictional limits of
the city, on tho l/ird’s Day. any negro nr negroes not tho
property of the owner of sni-l cook shop or retailer of li
quurs. the marshal or constables may enter the premises
xml take such negroes to jail, and the person or person*
- harboring or entertaining such negroes, shall lie lined

P ROPOSALS will be received at this Department until
the first day of August next, for the complete con
struction of steam machinery nnd appendages, and plac
ing it on board of five auxiliary screw steam frigates, to
bo at least 255 feet in length, nnd 3.000 tuus measurement,
one of-which is building at each of the United States nary

the propeller, with the connexions for hoisting up. of com
position. The fresh water condensers, machinery for hoist
ing. ventilating, pumps, kc.. with appurtenances of all
kinds, must be those most approved for inarino engines.
The tools au<l duplicate pieces necessary for an efficient
cruising ship-of-war. a list of which must accompany the
proposal, and also the coal bunkers, must be iucluded.
All the wood ami carpenter work necessary to adapt the
vessel for the reception of the engines, boilers propellers,
kc.. will bo nt the expense of the Navy Department.and it
will furnish the usual facilities and labor for hoisting the
machinery on board.
F'or the accommodation of the entire steam machinery
with fuel for ten days’ consumption, at the average speed.at
.-rage speed.
a load draft -f water of 23 feet including the keel, a length
not exceeding 00 feet can be allowed in the body of llie
ship, including the entire space under the berth-deck. The
greatest breadth of tiffs space under the beam will be 47
feet, and the height from the timbers to the bottom or the
beam 17 feet; the nrea of the section being 002 squnre
feet.
The weight of all the steam machinery, water in the
boilers ami coal within the space given, and including the
propeller nnd shaft, with appendages of all kinds and spare
pieces, has been estimated at 736 tons, iff 2,240 pound*, of
wlffeli 350 km* is for coal.
The distance between the main sterii-|Mist nnd the rud
der-post may he six feet, if that length is necessary for the
propeller in n fore and-aft direction, nml the depth from
the load water line to the top of the keel under the propell
er will bn 21 feet. The length from tho mainmast to the
stern-post will he about 112 feet. Hie area of the greatest
immersed transverse-! section to the deep load line will be
8tt6 square feet.
As auxiliary steam frigates Hie spars aud rigging will be
those of a frigate of the lirst class, of 1.800 tuns measure
ment.
Ti e particular arrangement of the machinery will be
left with those whose propositions may be accepted as com
bining the greatest number of advantages ; the desire of
the department being to obtnm thu greatest speed and
|tower with the most economical consumption of fuel ,

The terms of payment will be as follows : when one-third
of the work provided for hy the contract shall have been
completed in the satisfaction of the department, there
shall he a payment or one-fifth of the whole amount of ;
