Sec. 1. Bo it ordained by the May or and Alderman of tbo

same, That from and alter the passage of this ordinance
every |>erson who shall thereafter keep within tho city of
Savannah or Hie hamlet* thereof, or tt* extended jurisdic
tional limits, shop, store, bur room, tavern, oyster house or
collar, confectionery, eating house, porter.ale or beer house,
shall, on overy Saturday night at twelve o'clock, closo and
keep shut the door or doors, and window or windows of
such shop, store, hnr room, bar in a or attached to a tav
ern, oyster house or cellar.confectionary.eating house, por

Scc. 2. Be it further ordained by the authority aforesaid,
That no person whatsoever shall exchange, barter, sell or
offeror expose for snlo aftei twelve o’clock on every Satur
day night, and until twelve o'clock Sunday night, any goods,
wares, merchandize, fruits, herbs, malt, veinous or spiritu
ous liquors. or any other strong drink, or any other tilings
whatsoever, except medloines, ice aud milk.
Sec. 3. Bo it further ordained by the authority aforesaid,
That if any person or person* shall violato anv of the pro

Sec. 2 Be it further ordnlnod. That no tradesman, labor
er. or other person whatsoever, shall do or exercise any In

Sec. 5 Be it further ordained. Ac.. That no vessel, boat.or
water craft of any kind whatever, shall be allowed to load
or unload at any of the wharves or docks of the city or the
hamlets thereof, on Hie Lord’s Day, cases ot imminent dan
ger or urgent necessity only excopted. under tho penally of
w line not exceeding thirty dollar*.
Sec. C. Ito it further ordained, Ac . That no tavern keep-

tainment, shall suffer any feasting, drinking, gaiiuing. riot
ing or other disorderly and indecent conduct whatsoever,
on the Lord's Day, within their houses, out houses oren-
closures, under the penalty of a lino not exceeding thirty

Sec. 7. Ik) it further ordained Ac., thut no public sports
or pastimes, as bear-bating, bull-bating, horse-racing, rid
ing race horses through the streets or the city, or for ex
ercise from stables, foot-ball, shooting, hunting nr fishing,
interludes or plays, dancing, singing, fiddling, or other
music for the sake of meritnent. or uny other sports or pas
times or disorderly conduct whatsoever, shall be used on
Hie Lords day. and all ami every person or |>eroons offend
ing in the primises, shall forfeit for every such offence a
sum not exceeding thirty dollars.
Sec. 8. Bo it further ordained foi the lietter preservation
of decency and good order on the Ix>rds day. tile City Mar
shal attended by two or more City Constables, is iioreby
required on every Sunday during dlvim service, to walk or
ride through the city ami hamlets, to observe, suppress,
and apprehend all offenders whatsover, who shall bo found
acting contrary to tho intent nnd meaning of this ordi
nance, ami to enter into any public house. tippling house,
dramshop, negro cook shop, or other house or enclosure
wherein they heir any riot, noise, or indecent behavior,
or wherein they suspect any assembly of disorderly iiersons
or negroes for the purpose of suppressing tho snme. and
apprehendingtlie offenders, ami in case admittance or en
trance be refused, then tho said Marshall and Constables
are required to apply to tho Mayor or either of Hie Aider-
men,or to any Magistrate of the city, for a warrant or
order to break open any of the doors of the said house or
enclosure, and enter therein, ami any person or persons
who shall refuse entrance to the officers aforesaid, shall
for every such offence bo liable ton fine not exceeding thir
ty dollars.
See. 9. Be It further ordained, If there shall be found in
the ahop or enclosure of any retailer of spirituous liiiuors.
or any negro cook shop within tlie jurisdictional limits of
the city, on the I/ird’s Day. any negro or negroes not tho
property of the owner of said cook-shop or retniler of li
quors, the marshal or constables may enter tho premises
and take such negroea to jail, and the person or persons
so harboring or entertaining such negroes, shall be fined

prosecuted or molested for any offence contained in this
ordinance, unless such prosecution is commenced within

P ROPOSAIJS will bo received at this Department until
tho first day of August next, for tho complete con
struction of ateam machinery nnd appendages, and plac
ing it on board of fivo auxiliary screw steam frigates, to
be at least 255 feet in length, ami 3.000 tuns measurement,
one of which is bulldlngat each of the United States navy
ranis at Boston. Now York, ami Philadelphia, and two at
Norfolk.
Each offer must la* for a specific sum. and nclude all
patent lees for any arrangement that may be proposed.and
must state tho period in which the work can bo completed
The boilers lire to be of iron, witli telescope chimneys;
tlie propeller, with tho connexions for hoisting up, of com-
position. Tlie fresh water condensers, machinery for hoist
ing. ventilating, pumps. Ac., with appurtenances of all
kinds, must be those most approved for marine engines.
Tlie tools nnd duplicate pieces necessary for an efficient
cruising sliip-of-war. a list of which must accompany the
proposal, aud also the coal hunkers, must he included.
All the wood and carpenter work necessary to adapt the
vessel for the reception of tlie engines, boilers propellers.
Ac . will bo at the expense of the Navy Department, and it
will famish tlie usual facilities and labor for hoisting the
machinery on board.
For the accommodation of tho entire steam machinery
with fnellnr ten days' consumption, at tlienrerage speed.at
a load draft of water of 23 feet including tlie keel, a length
not exceeding 60 feet can be allowed in the body of tlie
•hip, including the entire space under tho berth-deck. Tho
greatest breadth of this space under tlie l.emn will be 47
feet, am) tlie height from the timbers to the bottom or the
beam 17 feet; tho ares of the section being 062 square
Tcet.
The weight of all the steam machinery, water in the
boilers nnd coal within the space given, and including tho
propeller and shaft, with nppendageanf all kinds and spare
pieces, has been estimated nt 735 tons, of 2,240 pounds, of
which 360 tons is for coal.
Tlie distance tietween the main stern post ami the rud
der-post may bo six feet, if that length is necessary for the
propeller in a fore and-aft direction, and (lie depth from
tho load water lino to the top or the keel under the propell
er will be 21 feet. The length from the mainmast to the
stern-post will be about 112 feet. The area of tho greatest
immersed transversnd section to tho deep load line will be
865 square feet.
As auxiliary stcsin frigates tlie spars and rigging will be
those or a frigate of tlie first class, of 1,800 tuns measure-
moot.
Tiio particular arrangement of the machinery will bo
left with those whose propositions may bo accepted as com
bining the greatest number of advantages ; the desire of
the department being to obtain tha greatest speed and
power with the most economical consumption of fuel
which the spaco available for that purpose will admit.
The terms of payment will he as follows : when one-third
of the work provided for by the contract shall have been
completed to the satisfaction of the department, there
shall be n payment or one-fifth of the whole amount of
the contract; when two-thirds of the work shall, in like
manner,be completed, there shall be a further payment of
one fifth ; when the ship shall have made a trial trip, sat
isfactory to the department, ot not less than one week nt
sea, there shall be a further payment of one-fifth ; and
when the ship shall havo been in tho possession odtlie de
partment. and performed satisfactorily for six months, tlie
remaining sum Rhallbn paid ; tlie repairs necessary during
this period, from defective workmanship nnd material, be
ing at tho expense of the contractor.
Each proposal must specify the ship for which -tlie offer
is made, nnd must be accompanied by full anil complete
specifications and drawings, which, if desired, will be re
turned to those whoso offers may not be accepted. It must
also be stated at what establishment the work is to be
done.
Each proposal must be accompanied bv a guarantee that
the contract, when awarded, will bo faithfully performed 1
and the successful bidders will be required to enter into
security for that purpose in the sum of three-fourths tho

plans and proposals to bo submitted in accordance witli
