day of February. 1856; one-tbird by the first day of April.

Bnidera must specify their prices separately and distinct
ly in separate offers for tlie beef and for the pork, and for
each of tlie places of delivery, covering all expenses
all charges.
The beef must be from well failed cattle, slaughtered
between the first day or November. 1864. and tlie firat day
of January. 1855, ami weighing not less than six liuudred
pounds, net weight, eucli. The legs and leg rands of tlie
hind quarters, and the aliius and shoulder clods, the shoul
ders of mutton ami ends of sticking pieces, nnd at least
eight pounds from the neck end of each fore quarter,'
the parts marked Nos. 1 2.3.4 and 6, on the drawing
delineation or tlie fore and hind quarters or an ox. which
ill be attached to nnd form a pnrt of the conti set. which
Ih- wholly excluded from each barrel, and the remaimlFriff
the carcass, instead of being cut witli a cleaver, must be
cut through witli a saw and knife, to give tlie meat a
square, neat, ami smooth appearance, in pieces of not less
than eight pounds.
Tlie pork must be packed from corn-fed. well fattened
hogs, slaughtered between tlie first day iff November. 1854
and tlie 1st day of January. 1855.ench, nnd weighing not less
than two hundred pounds each, excluding the heads, joles
necks, shoulder*, hams. legs, feet, butts, lard, and all refose
pieces ; anil must be cut With u taw and knife, in pieces
weighing not leeatliau six pounds each.
Both tlie beef and pork must be salted with ut lenst one
statute bushel of Turk's Island, Isle of May. or St. Ubes
salt; and the beef must Iiave five ounces of fine pulveri
zed saltpetre to each barrel.exclusive of a pickle, to be made
from fresh water a* strong as salt will make it. aud must
be perfectly bright and clear.
Each barrel must contaiu full 200 pound* net weight of
beef or pork.and no excess of weight in either article will
be paid for.
Tho barrels must be entirely new. nnd bo made iff the
best seasoned heart of white oak staves ami headings ; the
staves to be not less than five-eighths iff un inch thick, and
tlie headings not less than tliree-fourtha of an inch
thick ; they must be three-fourths hooped over, including
the iron hoopa. with the best white oak or hickory lumps,
and each barrel must have on it four iron hoops—viz: one
of one and a half inch in widtli on each bilge, and one of
one and an eighth Inch in widtli on each chime, and each to
be of the one sixteenth of an inch thick. FMch barrel
must be of the internal capacity of thirty-two gallons.
Each barrel must be brauded by burning on its head

The bed and pork will, unless otherwise directed by tlie
chief of this bureau, bo inspected by the inspecting officer*
at tho respective navy yards aforesaid, and by some
‘•sworn inspector of salt provisions.” who will be selected
by tlie respective commanding officers; but their charges
for such inspection must be paid by the respective con
tractors, who must likewise have tlie barrels put in good
shipping order, to tho satisfaction of the commandants of
tlie respective navy yards aforesaid, after inspection, nnd
at their own expense.
Two or more approved sureties in a sum equal to one-
half the estimated amount of the contract will be reiruir-
ed, and ten per centum in addition will.be withheld from
the amount of oach payment to be made, ns collateral se
curity for tlie duo and faithful performance of the respec
tive contracts, which will on no account be paid until tlie
contract.' are complied with iu ail respects ; and is to bo
forfeited to tho United States in the event of failure Incom
plete the deliveries within tho prescribed period. In case
of failure on the part of the contractor to deliver all or
any of the beef or pork abovo mentioned, of the quality
and nt tho times and places above provided, tho con
tractor will forfeit and pay to Die United Stales, as liquida
ted damages, a sum of money equal to twine the amount
of tlie contract price to be paid in case of the actual deliv-
thereof; which liquidated damages may be recovered
from time to time as they accrue. I'ayment will bo made
by tho United States at the period* above specified, (ex
cepting tho ten per centum to be withheld until the com
pletion of tho contract, as before stated.) after tho said beef
and pork shall have been inspected and received, and bills
for the saiiio shall havo been presented to tho navy agents,
respectively, duly approved by tlie commandants of tlio re
spective navy yards, according to tho terms of the contract.
The parts of beef to be excluded will be particularly des-
ignateil in tho engraving to bo attached to the contract.—
Persona Interested can obtain them, with a drawing of tho
barrel, on application at this office.
Bidders whose proposals are accepted (and none others)
will bo forthwith notified and as early as practicable a con
tract will be transmitted to them forexecution. which con
tract must bo returned to the bureau within teu days, ex
elusive of the timo required for the regular transmission of
the mail.
A record or duplicate of a letter informing a bidder of
tlie acceptance of his proposal will be deemed a notifica
tion thereof wiUiin the meaning of the act of 184(1. and
hlsbid will bo made and accepted in conformity with this
