Under our tctegraphic head will be found sad tidings
from this anxiously expected steamer. She has sunk,
and there is hardly any reason to doubt that an iin-
raenao majority of her passengers shared her fate.
The Arctic left Liverpool on tho 20th ult., with
two hundred and fifty passengers and a full freight
list. Of the passengers, a list of whose uames are
given below, nearly one-half arc said to belong to
New York city, including tho family of Mr. Col

of the well known firm of Brown, Brothers A Co.,
Edward Sandford, Esq-, and several others of note.
Two of the passengers are residents of Charleston,

there were none on board.

Dr, Stotebbury.—Wo had tho pleasure lust even
ing of re-welcoming Dr. Btotesuury to our city, re
stored iQ health, and ready to resume his labors
among the afflicted. A letter from Effingham, under
date of the 3d, informed us that Dr. S. was profes
sionally called there from this city, and before ho
reached his destination he was prostrated witli yellow
fever. He has evidently been rather roughly dealt
with, though we are rejoiced to know ho is still
among the living, the better prepared from experi
ence to feel for and minister to those in affliction.
Health or Augusta.
We take the following extracts relative to the pro
gress of the epidemic in Augusta, from tho Chroni
clt and Sentinel, ot tho 10th. That paper usually
reaches us a day or two in advance of tho Constitu
tionalist :
Health of the Mayor.—Among the new cases in
the last twenty-four hours, wo regrot to announce
that our worthy Mayor. A. P. Roiikrtron, 1h num
bered. We are, however, gratified to learn that the
attack is a mild one, and we hope soon to hear of his
restoration. It is indeed remurkoble that lie has
kept ap so long, for he lias at no time shrunk from
the discharge of his responsible duties, and has there
fore been exposed day und night, during tho preva
lence of the disease. In short, whenever and wlicre-
ever duty called, there he was to be found. No high
er praise can be bestowed.
The Week's Mortality.—We present, this morn
ing, oar regular weekly report of the mortality from
Yellow Fevor, for the week ending yesterday after
noon. It will be seen that there is a very great de
crease in the number of deaths, as compared with
the previous weeks. This is a gratifying evidence of
the abatement of tho disease, and its milder type
generally. The few cases now occurring are, with
few exceptions, of a very mild type.

Wo feel little surprise at tho result of tho elections
in Pennsylvania and Ohio, os reported by telegraph.
The Whig* and Abolitionist* combined, on the Ne
braska issue, have been too strong Tor tho Democracy,
weakened, a* it doubtless is in nil the northern
States, by treachery among those of lu members
most inclined towards anti-*lavery. We have for
months seen no reason to doubt hut that the fall
elections in the hireling States would hIiow a majori
ty in favor of the Free-Hoilers. Still we do not be
lieve the latter can secure the ascendency in the
next House of Representatives. There will bo a
sprinkling of Democrats chosen in all those States-
The*o, with the full Democratic delegations from tho
South, will, we think, give to that party tho control
ol the popular branch of Congress. Tho Democratic
majority in the Senate Is, of course, safe, for several
years.
The following is the order in which tho northern
electioun occur during the present and next month :
Pennsylvania, Oct. 10 ; Ohio, Oct. 10 j Indiana, Oct.
10; New York. Nov. 7 ; New Jersey, Nov. 7 ; Illi
nois, Nov. 7 ; Michigan, Nov. 7 ; Wisconsin, Nov. 7 ;
Massachusetts, Nov. 13. These State* are entitled to
121 representatives in the House. Nearly all of them
or® also about to elact a Governor and Legislature.
! of triumph, and the French immediately ceased
tiring, und surrendered, lloulbon was taken, and
was to bo executed by thu Souorian*, even in his
wotmded condition, immediately. Many ol his com
panions would probably share his fate, aud the AJexl-
cans were wild with exultutiou.
From ninety to one hundred and twenty French
men are said to have beeu killed in tho conflict.—
Thus, unhappily, tmsuuded tho life of one id the no
blest and most chivalrous spirits of tho age. Ho was
a hero, and his fate will bo mourned by ills country
men here, and regretted by alt who admire true no
bility of soul everywhere.
California lUtctlon.
The right wlr.g of the California Democracy, seem
to have achieved a triumph in tho late political con
test in California. Tho two divisions of tho party
have pone by tho uames of tho " Chivalry," and the
" Tammany " parties, aud more recently liuvo tukou
that of "Non-Electionlsta”und Klcctionists. Tho for
mer tho "Chivalry" or “Nou-EIectionists” nave gain
ed quite a triumph. The California Chronicle, Sept.
It!, speaks as follows :
The general election was held on tho 6th iust. For
Congress there were three tickets in thu field : Brod
erick aud Anti-Broderick Democrats, and Whigs.—
The returns from half u dozen counties uro yet to ho
received, but euough is known to establish the elec
tion of J. W. Denver and P. T. Herbert, Anti-Brod
erick Democrats. Tho Anti-Brodorick ticket 1ms so
lar 33,000 votes, the Whig ticket about 31,000, and
the Broderick ticket about 8,000. It is doubtful
whether Beard, tho Whig candidate for Clerk ol tho
Supreme Court, or Leake, his Anti-Broderick oppo
nent, is elected.
In the Legislature, so far us known, there uro 26
Democratic to 7 Whig Senators, and 45 Democrat®
to 35 Whigs in the Assembly. Hut it is very uncer
tain whether the Democrats will be able to unite on
uny candidate for the U. S. Senate.

With any other race of people, tho miserable, de
structive war now pending in this country would be
brought to a termination within twcnty-lour hours.
The city of Granada is about one half in ruins.
Gen. Chamorro, with about one thousand troops,
occupies the plaza, which he has fortified, und the
eastern portion of the city down to the lake ; while
tl:e revolutionists, numbering ubout twelve hundred,
Including one hundred cavalry, under tho command
of General Jerez, who was disabled in the action of
the lOtli July, blockudo him from the Jaltera, or
heights to the westward, and such has been their re
spective positions sinco the 20th May. General Cub-
tcllou remains at Leon, while Chamorro commands
his own troops in person, frequently sallying out at
the head of a company, capturing •* cargoes” and
prisoners, und returning to his fortress within tho
plaza.
On the 14th ult. Col. Francisco Clminorro, brother
to the President, led a company of 200, and made a
dash straight through Jerez s main body, out to Nan-
deyme. recruited 125 men, and returned with provis
ions, ammunition, aud specie, losing only about 30
of his men. The fighting continues day aud night
from the barricades and churches, und many prison
ers are taken on both sides; their priests confess
them, and they are shot at once. None dare venture
iuto the streets without bulls becoming too familiar
to be comfortable. You cun ride fur miles through
the openings made I rum house to house.
The tower of the church of the Mercedes, the higli-
>t iu Central America, is almost destroyed. Prop
erty of all descriptions is confiscated, und tuxes im
posed by both leaders. Business is totally suspend
ed, aud thousands of hides aud deer skins are daily
spoiling, for they cannot be taken care of. nor can
they be shipped, the lake being held by Castelluu'a
cruisers. Nearly ail of the merchants are fiat broke,
helpless, und whichever party may ultimately be
successful, two years of pence will not restore the
foreign business of the country to even comparative
safety.
Every department of the State is in the hands ol
Castellon, except Granada, and so it has been for the
past four months. Counter revolutions are daily ap
prehended. Au American named Doss Ims beeu of
immense service to Chamorro. He has displayed the
most reckless courage, occupying tho tower of the
Church of Mercedes and picking off with his unerring
rifle any Castellon who ventured to expose himself
within range. He was shot early In August, und,
when his wounds were pronounced mortal, the clergy
came to confess him, hut he dismissed them with an
emphatic malediction, und upon his death, being a
heretic, they refused to hi* body tho rito of Christian
buriul from the church ; but Clminorro, being great
ly attached to his deceased comrade, ordered tho
corpse removed to tho church and the priests to re
cite twenty-live masses, under penalty of death if
they refused to lacilitnte the passage of the deceased
soldier'^houI to Heaven. He was buried with tho
highest military honors ever awarded in this coun
try.
There are eight or ten Americans with the revolu
tionists. On the 18th of July an unkind six pounder
decapitated Dr. Peck, an American negro physician
from Pittsburgh, iu the service or Castellon.
Chamorro has grcutly distinguished himself by his
personal bravery, unflinching determination und per
severance in sustaining himself against such odds ;
and even if his cause were bad, he merits admira
tion. On the 29th inst. the Government of Costa
Rica dispatched a commissioner to Chamorro, offer
ing to furnish him with 1,000 troops and more, if re
quired, until the end of tho war, on condition that
the Costa Rica claim to the territory ol the eastern
bank of the San Juan River, including l'nnta Arenas
aud the south-eastern bank of the lake (Guanacaste.)
ol course including the right of navigation, shall be
acknowledged ; also that Virgin Bay and San Juan
del Sur, with the intermediate territory up the bound
ary line of Guanacaste shall be conceded to CoHta Rica.
This includes tiie present Transit route. If ho accepts
as he probably will, for Costa Rica threatens to take it,
with or without his consent, the wur will soon end.
The revolutionists will fall back on Leon aud forti
fy themselves ; but there can bo no doubt as to tho
result, for which the aid of a thousand Costa Rica
mountaineers he can drive the whole of Castellon's
hybrid army into tiie Pacific Ocean. Democracy is
not suited to this climate; the principles of the party
which yon are pleased to style the "Servile®" are
the only basis upon which a peaceful and prosper
ous government can lw erected lor this distracted
country.
These people have not had the inductive experi
ence which fitted the people or the United States for
a popular government of the broadest democracy—
thuy are yet probationers, und nre not yet fitted to
appreciate the lessons of your Washington nnd Jef
ferson.
You, who sleep In tho same bed every night, aud
pray every Sabbatli for a continuance of the bless-
•ngs of peace, and pursue your daily avocations un-
saluted with the music of whizzing musket-balls, safe
from conscription, not obliged to lly to the forests to
avoid it, no apprehensions of having your houses and
goods burned by your enemy, cannot comprehend the
condition or this unhappy country. The Prince of
Darkness seems to have let loose bis power here.
American minister* Abroad.
Mr. Galliardet, well known as tho former Editor
and present Paris Correspondent of the Courier ties
rtut Unis, gives the following intelligence in his let
ter published on Saturday:
" I have reason to believe that Al. Soule will, lu a
few days, Ito in Paris, and that his appearance’here
is connected with an important movement which
American Diplomacy proposes to make in regard to
European affairs. It is i.mini to be in disagreement
on more points than one with tho Governments of
the old world. Besides the difficulties with Spain
growing out or tho Black Warrior affair, there ore
on one side the discussions between AI. Belmont and
the Dutch Government, and those between Mr. Bu
chanan and Lord Clarendon in regard to tho Mos
quito Protectorate on tho other. A meeting is soon
to take place either in France, or at Buden-Spa, be
tween Messrs. Soule. Buchanan and Mason, to confer
on the policy which the American Government ought
to pursuo towards tho European Powers, in view ol
pending conflicts nnd of others which uro threaten
ed. This meeting, held by tho principal representa
tives of tho United States on tho old Continent, is of
a character to attract the attention or Statesmen
everywhere, unil diplomatic circles will give it spe
cial attention. The American Ministers evidently
apprehend that tho expansion of their frontiers will
meet a formidable obstacle iu the Coalition of Euro
pean interests ; and the European powers, on tho
other hand, fear the intervention of American De
mocracy in tlm attempts, open or secret, of the revo
lutionists. Tho remit of all these apprehensions will
l»o that, with u little prudence and respect for
other'® rights, both danger® cun be avoided.”
.The Foundations of Trade.—Tho idea of ex
change lies at the foundation of that vast aggregation
and wllicl1 we cull hy tho compre
hensive natno of business. One man wants what an-
adossflJ tt f a briP f,> »»‘ l »tion rests the
colossal rubric of trade. Indeed, ull movements
whothcrin things spiritual or things material may Iw
traced back to Inequality. Where all minds idem?
cal, there would bo no discount), no argument no
preaching. Were there no breaks in tho level of tho
kerrimack, there would bo no Well. The stream
runs, tho breeze blows, the eloquent msn sneak* from
diversity. Ho it is with commerce. One side „
rango ol hills produces corn, and another wine • the
fig is iu the valley, the pine on tho mountain; thu
North side Inis furs, tho South jewels and spices—

Tho lulu election was probably the most exciting
that ovor look plucu In California, and in Han Fran-
cUco in particular tho excitement reached to an
alarming height, and tho moat Herloii* consequence*
wer® apprehended. In a resume of tho political his
tory of California, it will bo neooN*ary to remind our
KosUtrn friomla that California ha* always bovu a
Democrat,o State. At the last session of thu l,ogiH-.
lalure oiio section of the Democracy repeatedly at
tempted to bring on tlm oloctloti of n U. B. Senator
to fill a vacancy that will not occur till March, 1855,
and tlm duties of which ollluo will not cominonco till
thu following December. Thoy were oil every occa
sion defeated. Day hy day tho spill iu the party Im
camo wldor and wider, till at length two di*liiu:t
faction* began to bo formed, and ouo was designalud
as thu Eluctloiilst und tho othor a* tlm Anti-Election-
1st nurty. 1'lis fight wan coutiuuud to llm Stale Con
vention, when a fonnal spill took place, which re
suited lu tho nomination of two Democratic tickets.
Thu Eluctionlsts renominated our Inte Representatives
in the National Congress, and tho Atitl-Electionists
Messrs. Denver nnd Herbert. Tho Whigs, confident
of success, nominated Messrs. Bowie und lluiiliuui.
On tlmuvo of the election Mr. Luthum arrived from
Washington, nnd having been made acquainted with
tho position of ullalr*. withdrew Ills name, and tlm
Elecllonlsta nominated In Ills stead James Church-
mini, of tywadu. Thus matters stood on thu day of
election. Tho election returns liuvo not yet coine in
from all parts of tho Stute, but it is generally under
stood that Messrs. Denver and Herbert, the nominees
ot tlm Anti-Electionist Convention, uro elected be
yond contingency. Ho turns heard from, they uro
considerably ahead. A rumor wuh, however, preva
lent this morning, tliut Mr. Bowie, onu of the Whig
candidates, would buclectod by a very small majority.
The rebuke received by tlm Electionlsis, however, in
all parts ot the Btutu was emphatic und decided. In
tho Municipal Elections mutters took quite a different
(Ota. Just previous to tlm election rumors wero
circulated with reference to tho organization of tho
Know-Nothings all over tho State, and it was expect
ed tliut their Influence would bo foil to sonic exteut.
Throughout thu Htuto those expectations wore real
ized, but In San Francisco they carried ull before
them. Tho Klectionist City and County Conventions
met und noiuiuutod members for tlm Legislature uud
City and Couuty Officers. Tho Anti Electionlsts did
likewise, but another split Imre took place, and tho
Secoders organized a third Convention und put iu
nomiualiun u kind of hybrid ticket compo.-md of the
other two. Tho Whigs held their Convention, nnd
formed a ticket. Tlm Association kuowu ns the
Ouldados put forward another list el names lor tho
suffrages of tho people. Certain individuals calling
themselves "Tlm l’eoplu," hung out uuother bauner.
Tlm Kunw-Nothings nominated a ticket of their o<
but it having subsequently transpired tlmt their
minee for tlm Mayoralty, Mr. Lucien Hermann, au
estimable citizen and well known in the community,
as a Roman Catholic, they repudiated tho first
ticket, aud nominated another. Bo there were, to a
certain extent, two Know-Nothing tickets. There
was, lastly, a Know-Something ticket.
During tho election iu this city tho most intense
excitement prevailed. Rumors of corruption, bribery
and ballot-box stuffing were rife. Several lights took
place, and several persons were wounded. Attempts
wfcre made to destroy the ballot boxes iu Homo of tho
Wards, uud the popular indignation became so great
that tho most serious consequences were apprehend
ed. Suspicion of foul play was directed lu particu
lar to the First Ward iu this city. The lynching of
nil tho parties connected with the election iu this
locality was freely discussed, aud to protect them
selves cannons wero got out, planted at the corners
of tho streets, and loudod with deadly charges of
nieces of iron, nails, und everything thut came to
[land. The gloom which hung over the city gradu
ally disappeared. The returns came in, und tho
Know-Nothings uchieved a triumph, having elected
their entire tleket, consisting of Mayor, IS. P. Webb,)
Comptroller, City Treasurer, Tax Collector, City
Marshal, City Attorney, Harbor Aloster, Judge of
tho Twelfth Judicial District, Judge of tho Buporior
Court, City Recorder, Public Administrator, uud
both Boards of the Common Council, with tho excep
tion of Um Alderman of the Eighth Wutd and the
Alderman and Assistant Alderman of tho First Ward.
A new election will probably be ordered in this Ward.
The nominations for Mayor, City Treasurer, Judge
of the Superior Court and City Recorder, were pure
ly Know Nothing, and were on no other ticket. The
oilier nominations, consisting of Comptroller, Judge
of the Twelfth Judicial District Court and Harbor
Master, were on all the Democratic tickets also, and
the nominations of Tax Collector, City Marshal,City
Attorney and Public Administrator, were on the
Whig ticket. With the exceptions mentioned above,
the members of the Common Council elect are Know-
Nothings, and were also on the Whig ticket.
The next Legislature will bo constituted us fol

ed l»y 111* Overseer nnd tVIfe.
We were informed yesterday evening by passen
gers on tho cars from licxingtou, of a tragedy that
occurred in the county of Fayette, on Saturday night,
which almost transcends belief, it is of so horrible a
nature. Air. Frazer,a farmer of the county, had
been absent with stock at Now-York for several
mouths, aud ou Saturday telegraphed hU family that
lie would reach homo tliut evening. Ilis neighbor
aud partner, Mr. Custlcinuu, awaited his arrival at
the depot, and conveyed him to his residence.
Leaving the house, Mr. C. was startled about an
hour afterwards hy the report ol a gun. He immedi
ately went to Frazer’s, and there discovered him dead,
the house darkened, Mrs, F. above stairs, Grigg, the
overseer, below, and a daughter, aged eve von, with
the mother. They accounted for tho death of the
mail hy the accidental discharge of ushotgun, which
he had in his hand preparing to shoot a rut. Suspi
cions were aroused aud tho overseer and Mrs. Frazer
both arrested. Tho body of tho deceased was terribly
bruised, a hole shot in his head, another through his
body, his throat very badly cut, and three ribs bro
ken, effects n< t reasonably caused by accident.
There appeared to be no doubt in the minds of those
advised ot the facts, as to tho criminality of Airs.
Frazer aud Grigg. Previous to this time the neigh
bors had suspected improper intimacies between the
two. and it iH supposed that it was for tho purpose of
getting Frazer out of tho way, so as to render a mar
riage) feasible, that the awful deed wus accomplished.
There arc various circumstances connected with the
affair, which go to criminate the suspected parties.
During Monday and yesterday they were undergoing
preliminary trial.

Dreadful Double Murder mid Bulcldc,
Greene, Chenango Co., Thursday, Oct. 5,1854.
I havo the onpleasent duty of giving you an ac
count of one of the most horrible double murders and
suicides that has ever been brought to my notice,
committed about four miles east of this village, on
tho turnpike leading to Coventry. It appears that
one David I). (Davis, a returned Californian, (tho
murderer and suicide,) has had a misunderstanding
with Ids wife and lately separated, they the past sum
mer living apart, and I believe both parties had com
menced actions for divorce. The trials were to come
off next week. The immediate cause ortho whole
difficulty, 1 understand, was jealously. This after
noon Davis met his brother-in-law, Buel Hotchkiss,
(ot whose house his wife had been hoarding,) at the
house or a Mr. Gilmore, a near neighbor, and after
conversation, Hotchkiss withdrew into the yard, fol
lowed hy Davis, who drew a revolver ami shot him,
killing him instantly. Ho then ran to bis brother-
in-law’s house and shot his wife, mortolly wounding
her, and then shot himself through the heart. Oar
whole community is in a grent state of excitement
on account of this horrible affair.
Itunawiiy Arrested.
Last Thursday a negro man was urrested ou thu
Orange and Alexandria railroad as a runaway, ma
king his way to Alexandria. He presented his free
papers, but they were so awkwardly executed that
the fraud was plainly seen. The conductor, Mr.
James Walter, had him tied and placed in custody
until the Warrenton train passed up, when lie was
taken to Warrenton and placed lu jail. He acknow
ledges that he ran away from his master, Col. Thos.
Jefferson Randolph, who lives near Charlottesville.
