Ik.tr Sir: —Your letter of 17th Inst, wiw liaiuh'd
tn um by Dr. Yonge, and In advance of guy iickiinwl-
odgment from our community, whom 1 have the
honor to represent, I bog to say Tor them and myself,
that we fineerrly thank you. Tho uh] and comfort
•eul to us was us unexpected (from yoitrown distress)
aa it wus grateful and oonsollng, and it afforded to
us a pleasing Illustration that a people no prompt
and liberal iu giving to others, were worthy of all
tho good gift* that they havo received under similar
drcumsUiicea, aud I doubt nut but it waa more their
pleasure to givo than to receive. Sorrow softens our
hearts, my dear Sir, uud makes iu hotter men ; let
u« hope, then, that returning health and prosperity
may not efface those Impressions, and that our whule
people nuty be bouellted by our sorrowful experience
within the last few month*.
Dre. Wragg and Yonge arrived safely on Tueada/
evening, and their first visit was to my own sou, and
although the crisis was passed, uud I felt, in hum
ble gratitude, that he would be spared to us. yet tho
reassurance by them of his safety, and their kind
words iind "tfcra or services, if required, afforded me
more satisfaction than I can attempt to express.—
They are now fulfilling their cm hussy in doing good
with zeal find cheerfulness, and every facility to
make their labors easy has been placed at their com-
muml. and all their visits and attentions are received
in that spirit of courtesy uud tlninkrulucsu which, to
thorn, is their best reward.
Of the six nurses (which, iu the fullness of your
heart, you sent me,) I will write you by to-morrow
evening's Mcumboat mail, returning such as are not
wanted here, nnd may be elsewhere yet, with thank
ful hearts for your kind intentions.
I can say nothing encouraging yet to our Iriouls
abroad, though the present cool weather promises
the host result*.

ported promptly, aad tbe report* were accordingly
very oearly or quite accurate. This ia not, however,
tbe caee now, a* recent lacta have fully developed.
Yesterday, for instance Dio Board reported only two
fealha from yellow fever. We knew of two other*,
and added their uames; and wc heard there were
atill other*, hut we could not obtain nuch information
4a to feel justified in adding tbeir names. Thin etate
ol things should not continue a day longer. Wo are
satisfied that oralaalona have been previously made.
W« aoggeat, therefore, that the reports of the Sexton
alone be relied on iu future, aud let him inukc hia
report* daily at throe o’clock, P. M. This will cor
rect the evil at once. Otherwise the reports of the
Board will be a mere farce.
MicoN-The Citizen, ol Friday, speaks aa folioxi
ot the health of Macon :
One case of imported yellow fever occurred in this
City on Taeaday evening last, lu tho person of a young
nun of the name of Clark, an Irishman, who bn*
bfien running on tho Central Railroad a* engineer,
There Imve also been several case* of malignant
bilioua fever, on tho east side of the river, two or
which have nrovod fatal—that or Mr. William Collins
and Mr. J. P. H. Dattell—and one or two other*, it is
anticipated, will terminate unfavorably. One of our
physicians is also down with the samo disease, con
tracted in hi* professional visitations to tbo flick.
With these exceptions, Macon continues remarkably
healthy, all reporta to tho contrary notwithstanding.
Columbus.—The Tima inform* iu that Columbus
was never healthier at this season of the yedr than
now, (October I9tb), and that there lias not been
case of yellow fever within its corporate limits during
tbe year.
Moxtgomkht.- Both tlie Journal and the Ailvir.
titer represent tho yellow fever ns greatly on the in
crease in Montgomery. The former of the 18th Inst,
in the absence of reports from the Board of Health,
gives the following, from reliable sources :
“ We learn that there are about 25 cases among the
whites now under treatment; oil, or nearly nil are
believed to tie yellow fever. Toe number among the
Macks, we have been unable to ascertain, but ore in
formed that it is ranch larger than among the whitcH
Whether they have the yellow fover or not we are
unable to say; but whatever it may be, it is very
malignant and fatal. J
We sar to our citizen* who are absent, that they
had better remain away until we have a heavy frost,
aa there would be great danger in rotarning to the

Terrible Sickness—Perhaps the Plague In
London.
A letter from Facia, dated October 2d, mentions
that Mr. Bucranan, the American Minister to Kng-
land, wiu about visiting the continent, partly ou ac
count of the extreme uuhealtbiucas of Loudon. This
uuheaUhiueM*, it the following communication, which
appear* in the Home Journal, is to be lielieved, is
caused by the preseuoe of the Plague iu tbe British
metropolis. The editor of the Home Journal says it
comes from a "literary friend,” and a "man of ve
racity," aud therefore publishes it, while " coufe.-s-
ing that it uppeurs more than probable the saddeu
outbreak of a severe visitatiou of Asiatic cholera,
with that slight variety in Ita symptoms which is uot
uulrequeutly observed, may have given rise to an
impression, on the part of those who were scourged
with it, that tho Plague, which had been buried for
the best part of two centuries, was agaiu decimating
them."
I am at present running away from London, nnd.
what is more, although not much given to fright, I
am running uway because I aiu literally scared out of
it. The fact is, although I presume, from the care
ful manner in which the details of it arc suppressed
here, you will nt present hear but little of it, that f he
" Plague," or something very much like it, has com
menced in Loudou. Ycu open your eyes as I say
this, and possibly doubt my sanity ; nevertheless, let
me nssure you, that I am saying nothing which is not
strictly true.
One hundred and fifty years since, more or less,
the Infection of the Plague was brought to tbi9 city
from Alexandria, In a cheat of clothes. Half of Lon
don perished with this fearful contagion. The bodies
were carried out and buried in deep pit* in those
fields which now lie under Argyle street and its im
mediate neighborhood. Tills Plague, It is said, has
now been turned up by the spade, and has begun to
ravage Loudon. Impossible us this may seem, the
surgeons and physicians say positively that London
i* not sutleriug much from the cboleta ; that it is a
contagious disease which haB broken out in this
neighborhood, and that it is rapidly spreading.
It would appear that in cutting a sewer through
Argyle street, it was carried rather deeper than ordi
nary, aud tbat bones of the old victims of this fearful
disease wore turned up by tbo workmen, many of
whom were taken III and died suddenly. Children,
also, who bad| come and played with these bones,
sickened and perished I Moreover, it was noticed
that those who came in contact with either thu work
men or children, sickened and died, in most cases
within a few hoars. The diseaae now spread rapidly,
and in a week from the time at which it broke out,
it bad completely ravaged the streets in Bolin and its
immediate vicinity ; at the present moment. Poland
street, Aigyle street and other*, are closed against
all passers. Half tbo shop* in ltcgent street are shut
un. Tbo remainder are rapidly closing. At two
o'clock in the day, scarcely a dozen persons may bo
met with in that great thoroughfare. In those streets
which the disease in moat speedily depopulating the
dead bodies are placed in the open air, immediately
that lifo has departed from them, so great is the fear
of contagion. I havo seen in two instance*, half a do
zen bodies being carried off in block sack*, like bales
of good*, for burial. You will easily judgo how
great a fright this lias created. Kvery one who is
able fo do so, bus fled. Londou, generally at this
time just emptying, is now half depopulated. Three
days since, William Vincent Wallace ran away. He
is not a man easily frightened. Ask him, and he will
corroborate what I have told you, ah be must now be
In New York. Rnslueas Is at a complete stand-still.
Nothing is doing. Amusements for tho time being
have completely closed.
Physicians suy that this Is undoubtedly the Plague.
The symptom* occasionally vary from those which
are reported lo have accompanied H when it, In the
reign of Charles II.. swopt off' ouo-half of London
No medical means have as yet availed to Htop it. It
Is propagate ! by contagion, and is singularly speedy
in it* effect*—surpassing even tbe opeed with which
tho cholera, units first apponrancc, slew Its victims.
Never, indeed, in tho worst period of the first visita
tion of that disease, did London look so dreary as it
now does. * • * * I ain now going to Germa
ny, whence you may probably have another letter
from me. * * " Borne time since, the English
were talking of the necessity of bombarding Dantzlc.
They are now »ileut touching everything except that
which they call, and which most undoubtedly is, the
Plague.
