Mutable as hare ever been human affaire and hu
man opinions, history probably records no more strik.
ing change of public sentiment, than that which to now
going on in the United States, lu regard to tbe Kart,
ern war. Long after a rapture between France, Eng
land and Tnrfcey on tbe oos aide, and Rossis on tbe
other, teemed inevitable, tbe Washington Union was
compelled by popular clamor to discharge one of its
editor*, for tbe oft tree of faking the Russian side of
the controversy. We will not deny that oar own
sympathies were at that time In favor of Turkey, an
opposed to IUusis, though as regards France and
England wo were by no moana violently affected in
tbair behalf. Nearly every American newspaper was
load in Ua daannciaUoa of Russian ambition and bar
barism, aad equally loud in tbe expression of French
sod English sympathy. This after being checked in
ita flow to now reraising its current. From Bostou
to Xew Orleans there is not a city in which one or
more journals have not very explicitly declared in fa
vor of Russia, and against tbe allies, rapere which
a few weeks since anaoonced with satisfaction tbe
fall of Sevastopol, are now hopingfor a repulse of the
attacking forces.
Nor to it difficult to account for this change in the
current of American sympathies, however unaccouut-
abto may have been their first direction. The indi
cation of French and English jealousy, not to say
anmity, towards tbe United States, are too manifest
to allow us to be thoir friends, or to permit us to de
sire their ncoaas against a power, which, ambitious
or whatnot, has shown only kindness in ita dealings
with us.
Wa any than, success to the arms of Russia, and a
disaster to the Mu-holy and unchristian alliance be

But however all tbto may be, the moat serious con
sideration to, the numerous givings out in England
aad Prance, that after they shall bare succeeded iu
impoaing their own passions, interests or policy upon
Europe, they mean to undertake the sametbiog with
regard to America. Lord Clarendon distinctly pm-
claimed this ; and tbo London Times, only a few
weeks ago, lu an evidently semi-official article, as
sured as that nothing coo Id bo easier than to send
tbe allied fleets over her* to bombard and garrison
some of our soacoast cities ; and we were contemptu
ously advised to como to our senses, and bo frighten
ed out of out designs upon Cuba, in view of tbe aw
ful peril tbua Impending.
Under such circumstances, bow is it possible to ex
pect that tbe people of the United States should join
with England and France, in tbe ringing of bellsaud
th* firing of salutes, upon tbe arrival of intelligence,
true or false, that the allies—after exhausting all the
resources of science, art, intellect and courage, for
thatparpoea-have succeeded in accomplishing tbe
philanthropic object or shooting or subbing forty or
fifty thousand Russian* in tiw Crimea, and Intend
next to repeal the proc*ae iu the United States ?
It to to b# hoped tbeee apprehensions, which are
more or leMOorrent, may prove to be Ill-founded—
Tbe fact, however, is undeniable, that how much-
eoever, if at all, England and France may have cause
to apprehend tbe ambition of Russia, we in tbe Uni

ambition of England and France, who fu late years,
have exhibited so ranch proclivity to intenneddlo in

Moke Thievi.su Operations.-—We are informed,
on reliable authority, that a cheapening operation on
thu prices of country produce was detected at the
plantation of Win. Faulk, near Marion, in Twiggs
county, on Thursday night last. Mr. Faulk, with
some of his neighbors, having cause to suspect a de
pletion ol thoir corn cribs in a clandestine manner,
were on the watch. Two men, with a two-borse wa
gon. were encamped in the vicinity. At a proper
hoar of the night for such operations, negroes were
seen carrying them bags of corn, for which they
traded, bartering in., some cases Cognac brandy at
eighty-seven and a half cents a gallon, tobacco, Ac.
at corresponding prices. On being interrupted by
the owners of the corn, they begged very hard to
compromise the matter, and by receiving North Car
olina irw, to the aatiafaction of their captors. This
being refused, they were safely deposited in Jail at
Marion, leaving tbe horses and wagon, and articles of
traffic, in their hands. The men gave their names u
Zachariab and Elias Garis—said that they were from
the vicinity of Macon, and named some of their
friend* in Macon, who, as they said, would be their
security on bail.
Their operations in country produce, are supposed
be a counterpart to those in Clothing, Bool*, Shoes.

sellers at very reduced rates—while the railroads
have bad reason to complain of paying full prices,
