the Kamo Is for a negro or other “slave, his or her
name and occupation, and the nemo of the master.owner,
or person having charge of suob slave shall be also therein
inserted. And for the said badges the several sums follow- .
ing shall be respectively paid into the city treasury, to wit:
for any slave to exercise the trade of cabinet-maker, house )
or ship carpenter, caulker, bricklayer, blacksmith, tailor,
barber, baker, or butcher for hire, the sum of ten dollars if |
the owner or owners of said slave be resident in the city
of Savannah, but if the owner or owners of said slavo be
non-resideuU of the city of 8avannali, the sum of tweuty
dollars shall be paid for a badge for each and every me
chanic slave as aforesaid, and for all other slaves being
mechanics or handcraft tradesmen, or hire at also for
pilots, fishermen, boats, and grass cutters, and hucksters,
the sum of eight dollars, if the said slave l>o owned by a
person or persons resident, or fifteen dollars if owned by a
person or persons non-resident in the city : and for every
female slave being a porter or nuy other daily labor
er for hire the sum of two dollars and fifty cents, and for
every male slave being a porter or other daily laborer, the
suin of four dollars if the raid slave be owned by a resi
dent. or ten dollars If said slave be owned by a non-resi
dent of the elty. And the said badge shall be suspended
and bo exposed to public view on the breast of the said
slave whilst at work or vending ; and if any slave for
whom a badge has been taken out. be lound working or
vending without having bin or her badge so suspended,
such slave shall, by order of the Mayor. Chairman, or any
two Aldermen, receive not exceeding thirty-nine lashes on
the bare back, to be carried into execution by anv city
officer : 1‘rorided, that if any pereou having charge of any
slave so offending, shall pay the sum of three dolUrs,sucb
slave shall be exempt from corporal punishment.
Sec. 3. And be it further ordaineit. That if any owner or
other person having charge of negro or other slaves, shell
let out to hire or suffer any slave to work out or to sell
fruit.gurdonstuffs, grass,orothercommodltie* of any na
ture or kind whatsoever, without having first taken out a
badge, as aforesaid, he, she or they shall be liable to a fine
not exceeding AITy dollars ; and said slave may be com
mitted to jail, there to remain until said fine and expense*
are paid : Provided, that nothing herein contained shall
be held to extend tu plantation or country negroes, who
may sell any articles produced or raised in the country, on
producing a ticket from their owners or other persons
having charge of them, which ticket shall particularly
specify the articles so to be sold. On failure to produce
irochticket. such country slave shall be liable to be dealt
within the same manner as ilsves belonging to the city
without a badge, as aforesaid
Sec. 4 And be it further ordained. That any free i.egro,
mulatto, or mestizo*-, who shall sell, or offer for sale, in this
city, any small wares of any description, shall bo obliged
to take out a badge for the same, for which he or she shall
nay to the treasurer ihe sum of eight dollars, and If any
free nlgro. mulatto cr mestizo#, shall sell, or offer lor sale,
any small wares, as aforesaid, without having taken out a
badge, as aforesaid,ho or she shall be liable to a fine not ex
ceeding twenty dollars, or to whipping, at the discretion of
the Mayor, Chairman, orajy Alderman.

An Ordinance relative to Drays, Wagons, Ac.
Section 1. He il ordained. That no person shall let. or
drive, for hire, any carl, dray, wagon, or other carriage,
within the cltv, without having obtained a license for so
doing from the City Treasurer, for the time being, who
shall number tho same, and register the same, and for
which license the sum of 87 for each one-horse dray, $10
for each two-horse dray. $6 for each one-horse curt nr
wagon. $10 for each two-hom cart or wagon, as prescrib
ed by ordinance passed 20th December. 1840, so intended
lor hire, shall be paia for tho use of the corporation ; sod
in case any cart, wagon, dray, or other carriage, shall be
let or driven for hire, within the city, without having first
obtained such license, and without having the number of
such license, and no other, stamped on a tin plate, not less
than three inches long, in some conspicuous place on said
cart, wagon, dray, or other carriage, so intended to be let
or driven for hire; the owner or owner* thereof shall, for
every such offence, forfeit and pay a flue not exceeding
thirty dollars.
Sec. 2. And be it further mdainal. Tlraffgacli dray, cart,
wagon, or other carriage, so intended for hire shall be dri
ven and managed by a sober, discreet, and able person,
not lesa than six teen, and not over sixty years of age; aud
for a violation of the provisions of this sectlou. the owners
of such dray, cart, wagon or other carriage, shall forfeit
and pay a sum not exceeding thirty dollars
Sec. 7. And be it further ordained. Tint ir any driver of
a dray, cart or wugon. shall bo convicted of extortion, or
charging moie than the rates prescribed by this ordinance,
the owner oi the raine shall be fined In a sum not exceed
ing thirty dollars, to be collected and enforced In the same
manner as is prescribed in (lie fourth section of this ordi
nance. and the driver of said dray, cart or wagon, may be
discharged and incapacitated from driving, and the license
cancelled.
Ordinance prosed 6th June. 1839.
By ordinance pawed (his year the iirice of badgu* for
slaves, and licenses for drays and otiicr vehicles, during
this and the next month, will be issued lor half price, ex
clusive of fees.
The City Police and City Watch are hereby notified to en
force, the pro vie tone of (he above ordinances against all viola-
tori thererf. m and after Monday neat.
