New England Spring Prospects—There is no
doubt that tbe season of spring is very backward this
year. Even as late as the beginning of April, when,
os a general thing, farmers are ploughing their Holds
and jdauliog tbeir peas, and horticulturists nrc dig
ging in their gardens, the ground i3 bound in frost.
The month of March was umimally cold: but the
prospects now arc that tho rigors of thexold season
will soon be over. There is nevertheless a great deal
of snow still upon the ground in New Hampshire and
Vermont. The prospects tor fruit in the approach
ing fruit season are good. The coldness of tho wea
ther which has prevailed, has checked tho expansion
of tho buds, and will render them less liable to be in

I’hcIHc ltnilroail—Survey of the Southern
llautc.
We have received a small volume iu manuscript,
abounding in beautiful pictorial Illustrations, and
embracing the results of u topographical roconnois-
anuco of tno extreme Southern route tor u railroad
from the Mississippi valley to the Pacific ocean, by
A. B. Gray, late U. S. Surveyor tho Mexican Bound
ary Commission. This manuscript wc shall publish
as Boon as wc can conveniently make room for it in
our columns. In tbo meantime, wo can promise our
readers that ibis rcconnoisanco will give all the
practical information desired in reference to this
Southern i’aciflc route.
Those notes include an examination of the entire
Soutuem litre, from thu eastern limits of Texts west
ward to tho Rio Grondo and El Paso; thenco through
tbo defiles, and over tlio depression of tho Sierra
Madrc. or Rocky Mountains, into the elevated table
lauds of theGadsduD country; tbeuce in the general
direction of Col. Cooke's wagon route to tho Pacific.
The advantages of tnis route, as shown in tho lato
report of tho Secretary oi War, over all the other
Pacific routes for a railroad, are that it is Irom flvo
to eight hundred miles shorter than any other, that
it is entirely free from tho obstructions of snows and
freshets, that it will require no tunnelling, very little
bridgo building, and that over the greater part of it
the trois-tics and rails may bo laid down with littlo
or no grading, and that there arc vory fow points
where any heavy gradiug will be required.
Tho disadvantages cf UjIj route nro the general ab-
i-cnce of timber, tlic genera! scarcity . f water, and
the predominating desert-like character of the coun
try. from ouc extremity to the other. These draw
backs, however, cxi*t on every other route, in addi
tion re the obstacles of vast chains of snow-covered
mouuUiua, volcanic defiles, deep ravines and water
courses, nnd a great increase or tho length of the
journey. Were other things equal, the single item
in favor of tho extreme Southern routo, of a saving
of at least fivo hundred miles over auy other from the
Mississippi valley, would bo conclusive. But It has
advantages in respect to climate nDd topography
equally decisive. It turna the vast mountain harriers,
which.by all the other routes, will have to he cliined
over or tunnelled.
Nature and the topographical engineers concur in
favor of tbi- extreme Southern ronte. There is, and
cau bo uo other practicable route for a Pacific rail
road for half a century to com*.*, within the limits of
tli" United State.:, short of the annexation of .Mexi
co. And, as the next Congress may be called upon
to decide whether they will devise tho ways and
means for the PaoiUe road, or co;i.f.-utto the loss of
aii our Pacific territories in the establishment of an
independent republic, tho road by this Southern
route, as the only re illy practicable one, euggests it
self as a great Union measure, aud an imperative
public duty at auy cost—N. Y. Herald, April 9.
