Prospects.
The meeting at the Athenaeum last night was one
of the least enthusiastic of the season. Tbe spirits
of onr Know Nothing friends are evidently growing
less buoyant and confident, as tbe day which will
decide their late approaches. This is indeed for
them a most unfortunate issue. The Constitution,
the people, aud the whole history of the Republic
agalosttbem.it la no wonder the rutnre looks dark
andgfoomy.
Ills evidently impossible, since under the pressure
of popular our Know odium Nothing friends reluct
antly burst tneir ignominious bonds asunder, to keep
tbelr troops together. 01 tho audience, assembled
at tho Atbenmum last night, we were assured,
half, mauy thought more, were Anti-Know Nothings.
That retreat in tbe boor ol battle waa an Unfortunate
as well as an ominious event. Once set at liberty
our Know Nothing friends do not relish tbe sight
even of tbelr former chains.
( Of tbe forensic efforts, tbe only one'worthy of par
ticular mention was that of Mr. Law. This gentle
man inlly sustained tbe reputation which bo baa
long enjoyed. Confining himself to patriotic gener
alities, Mr. Law did not enter very proloundly
into tbe great political questions now agitating tbe
country, but for neatness ol arrangement and choice
and beauty of language we bare rarely heard his
speech excelled in a political canvass.

■You raise, Judge, put forth some Btrsugc views
upon tbe present sute of old political nartioe. You
say,"Uw whig party Is not dead." Thou, It only
"ileepetb." and stands ready, whenever opportunity
offers, to bring iU old columns Into the field. Also,
using your language, "as a conservative body it (the
Whig party), nevertheless exists, aud must continue
to do ao, aa long as % genuine aptrit of conservatism
la cherished by tbe people of Georgia/’ There hap
pens to be a s Ltd gT difference betweon Judge Berrien

they have "arisen upon tho ruins, and in aplto of
lbs opposition ol tbe -Whig aud Democratic parties"
and "cannot be held in any manner responsible for
tho obnoxious acta, or violated pledges of either."
This involves you In aaother absurdity—Id a dl-

of tho party whose doctrines you expound, or with
out doe caution sod circumspection, you have per-
milted" tho cat to get out of the wallet,- ’|tbat thev
prefer to retain, until some convenient season shall
mark the time for Its escape. Why did you not
favor tho public with the present whereabouts of tho
Whig party,"as lt"ABSTAiNS as a party from enter
ing Into this contest ?" 1 presume you mean to say,
that now they are acting only as good Know Noth
ing voters, forming ulne tentbs of that material. Uy
oommon understanding, tboy throw off tho name
of Whigs fouthr tier, and aasurno that of "Know
Nothings,’’saying to "Whlggery," "lay hers till I
whip this fight, then I'll put you on again"— never
theless, they do not exUi aa a party—they are osi.v
Know Notuinus, and they are no party 7 The dis
tinction you hero make Is about as woll drawn, ns
that you take between what the people may do as a
H ie, and wbat they may do as a Government, act-
a both rases pursuant to tho Constitution.
It baa always been my opinion. Judge, that the
Know Nothing party la but another Invention, under
a now name, to defeat tho Democrats. However
tboy may have differed at l’hlladalphia upon other
questions, tboy were all agreed In tusking war upon
tho Democrat! in oknirai.. and tho Tierce adminis
tration in rARTict'LAR. You sustain me in that
opinion; for It seems you are now assigned an ole-
vated position, to act as a "finger board,” to point
out to all WiiAT to no, who aru hard to take a hint.
But, happily for the public good, there are many-
very many—Whigs, worthy and talented, too patri
otic to tako yoor hint. They may be willing to do
feat Democrats, but'when to do|ao it la necessary to
violate the Constitution and trivlr with tho rights
of tbe South, they will first pause, and then orrosa
you. Democrats who have joined you will not feel
comfortable, or complimented by the terms of your
letter, and all tru« ones, not in a state of absolute
blindneaa. who have not "an itching palin’’ for the t 0 cover tho samo witl
State or National Treasury, will abaudon you by the
day of the election.
Aa you farther proceed you becomo bolder and
more explicit in dbi'ININo this war against tbe De
mocracy. Let us hear you. "A great party wield
ing tbe power of the government has attained, and
maintains Itanower by tho aid ot a vote which is
substantially foreign, although the voters may have
passed through tbo forms of a hurried naturahzatioa-
U la natural that they should be uuwilllng to courur
in any measure which might divest them of this
power, or have a tendency to diminish their present
or prospective means of securing and increasing It."
Tbe plain Koglisb of this is, that without tbo for
eign vote aa ao aid, Democrats would never bavu
attained power—therefore, if you cao get rid of
this vote Tor the future, the Whigs under your lead
are ready again "to enter the contest as a party,"
fully assured of victory. I could safely Join issuo
with you upon tbs correctness or your proposition,
bat it is unnecessary. It la sufficient that Demo
crats will not aid you In "a trick" that is to uud in
the overthrow ot their principles. Msoy Whigs of
principle and couscionco will not becomo a party to
such gross Injustice to the rights ol citlxcmand the
good of tbe country.
More than this, Southern Whigs are conscious
that while in the Union a patty Is powerless for
[Ood. nnlcsa it has a national organisation. Tho
Northern Whigs are Abolltionized, and they will not
coalesce with them in a national party.
Do you meau to aay that tho National Whig par
ty la a till ‘in existence ?" If ao your imagination w
ao vivid as to runaway with your reason. The Know
Notbmga are as completely demoralleed ns tho
Whigs upon tbe great Boutbcrn question.
Tbe Democrats of Georgia havo said "that they
will not affitiato with any party that shall not re
cognise, approvo and carryout tho principles and
irovlslonaof tbe Nehraska-Kansos act, and that the
Mmocratfo party of Georgia will cut off all party

To tht Editors of the Savannah Georgian: •
Urmtlkxkn I observe In your paper or yester

A controversy arose a short time since in Colum

Gait. Lomax—Sir—Upon an examination of the

deduced tbetolom as to tbo poteer and duly of man

1. That U a doubt la suggested as to the legal

lame fbr ovsjrloplRBg them as I ul J. Aa soon aa
Maj. Howard returned to Colutubu*, l received a
letter irom Mr. J. D.Gray offering $40 per ton for
Uie IUlla delivered iu Atlauta—this oflor,it appears,
waa for tbe 1 buinastou Company. Tbe very high
price offered for old IUlla which have beeu uaed for
eight years under a heavy trade, and tbe time of
the offer, being within tbroo days after I had cluaed
with Maj. Uoward, gavs It tho appearance of apo
litical macumvra undertaken lor the Injury of Gov.
Johnson. Why did they want to buy old Ralls at
$40, when uow onto could bo bought at $50? tbo laat
being tho price puld for those wo are now laying
down;and why wore thry sllunt for elgUtecn months,
to npiko their application wlthiu three days after the
salo had been effected? I have, since learned that
Gon. Mims waa actiug In behalf or Uiu Tbomaatou
Cumpatiy, which,-If truo, tcavea them uotblng to
complain of, for ho made two bids, hut uudor tbo
iriro at vrbkb tho aalo was efl'cctcd. Hut be this as
t may, I only am to blame, tliu Governor knew
uotblng of -tbo previous oorrea|tondcncu with the
Thomas too Company, auu l had lorgoitou It until I
saw Mr. Wells, their Engineer, iu rompany with
MsJ. Howard Kt Atlanta.
Now. aa td the sale or care. Bcver.il judgmeuta
were obtained against tbo Uoad in Tonnoa>ec, on ac
count of claims instituted In 1852 and 1 made ar-
rangemouu which 1 thought would prevent tbo is-
saanooof executions. Nevertheless one of tho cre
ditors did Itauo. and levy waa mado upon fifteen
•took cars atoudiogon the track out of use, at Chat
tanooga. They went to sale, and wore bid In for our
Koad.'by a gentleman who was requested to act (or
us.. We paid the money in two or threo days after
wards—tbe care never (eft our tracks—uever went
out of our possession one murnent, and the Uoad lost
nothing by the transaction but the Sheriffs Commis

The Know Nothing papers of Georgia have lost
sight of Foreigners and Catholics, auu every prin

ono hour in every day from this to tbe 1st day of
October in rcluliug the lies told on him, he wouldn't
get through tho lut. Did any intelligent reader of
the Know Nothing presses, ever aee a high minded
