Mates tlmt a bearded race ore tho conquering races.
For this reason the lieardleu races are averse to tlio
union with them. This aversion lie states to bo the
i-suie of experience, proving the superior activity

I cannot imagine why a beard la given to man.
unless it is to try htsipatlence, if he is to sneud his
(into iu daily cutting it, as it dally auerta Us right
to a maultuxteri cxutcnco. The beard is an emblem
of manly power and dignity, nod it certainly an
ilemoul ol manly beauty, l'bo Father or tho
Faithful, and all the old Patriarchs and Prophets
wore beard; so did our Saviour, when ho dwelt as
mail among the bills of Judea. So, too, most of
iite venerable divines who have transmitted to us
tiieirhcbomes or theology. It Ih a modern innova
tion to shave off the whole beard. It was uut com
mon before the coraaienceaieat of the tost century.
Moses forbade the Jews to mar tho corners of their
licards and David, when bis Embassadors wore iu*
suited by Hainan's shaving off one-half ol their
beards, permitted them to tarry at Jericho till their
beards bad grown. .
•• While the beard, properly wuru, is au uruament,
It U sometimes rendered hideous by tho manner in
which it Is trimmed. A round mussot bristles on
the chin is never becoming, yet Hometlmcs thin-
cheeked, loug-faced gentlemen elongate their coun
tenances, in this way; olten these tarts impart a
low, aoimai expression; they never confer dignitv
nor beanty. Borne few are greatly improved by full
whiskers, others by a moustache. Some look best
with the beard rather close. It requires an artist’s
eye to decide un what is most becoming. Nature
leavesa varying outline to the beard, which is more
perfect than any semi-circle cot by tho razor.
" Perhaps you may think I have wandered from
my proper sphere In writing about beards. I bad
no Idea of doing so when I commenced this letter;
yon must charge it all to snow-storms. 1 must
leave the subject of ladles' dross for another day.

Away went the boy foil ol bis mission, and, just
before the borders or bis father’s estate, to! a mod-

knocked at the door. The good wffo oponod it for

"No," replied John," the bay for me; ho is more
square in front, and his legs are better." “Now,"
said the wile,“I don’t think so; the gray mare is
the better horse, and I shall never be contented on-
