The man for whom he endeavored to destroy her
■ *ta. i m was already matter of her heart, and she oli-

( ounleaa.and the peaceful possessor of the iinuienre

Hut the Count knew how to carry bis point either
hy management or force. He was an old lion. He
;ud preserved all the vigor of youth, and all the
i jde firmness of an indomitable character, which
i.utblng bnt paternal tenderness had ever softened.

written to Helen. The Chevalier, impatient to at-

to the yoaugCounteea, an elopement, and proposed
a clandestine meeting, at the boar when the Count
waa io the habit of going out to plsy whist with
sains gentlemen of bis acquaintance at tho Con ver
nation House.
A rose placed In Helen’e halt was to be the signal
of consent.
The young girl had hot read the adroitly intercept
ed note. "Put this flower in your belt," said trie
Count to her. offering a rose, "aud come with me."
Helen smilingly obeyed, aud took her father's arm.
lu the course of their walk they met Oaetan, who,
teeing tho rose, was overjuyed.
Then the Count conducted his daughter to the
residence of one ofetbair acquaintances, aud request
ed her to wait nntil became for her. Tbaldoue, he
returned to the little house in which ho lived, at the
outskirts of Baden, on the Licbteutbal road. He had
sent away bis servants, and was alone. At the ap
pointed hour Oaetan arrived at the rendcsvoua, leap
ed lightly over the wall of tho gardeu, aud, Unding
the door abut, entered the bouse through one of tire
low window*. Then mounting tbs stairs, filled with
pleasing emotions, he directed bis steps towards tho
apartment of Helen. There, instead of the daughter,
tie found the father, armed with a brace of pistole.
The Count dosed the door, and said to the wretched
(Saotau, trembling with terror:
"1 could kill you; 1 have the right to do so. You
bavo entered my house at night. You have broken
into it. I could treat you as a felon; nothing could
be more natural."
"But, sir," replied Oaetan,almost inaodlby,"Iam
not a robber."
"And what are you, then? You have come to steal
my dao|bter~to steel an beirese—to steal a tortune.
Here is yonr letter, which revealed to me your crim
inal Intentions. I shall show yon no mercy 1 But
to take your life, 1 had no need of this trap. You
know the skill of my right arm; a duel woultl have
long ego rid me of yoa. To avoid scandal I did oot
wish a duet, and now I will alay yoa only at the Inst
extremity, if you refuse to obey me."
"What is your will, sir!"
"You must leave Baden, not In a few days, not to
morrow, but this very instant. Yoa mutt pat two
hundred leagues between Hand you. and never again
come into the presence of my danghter or myself.—
As the price ol your obedience, and to pay your trav
eling expanses, I will givo you twenty thousand
francs."
The Chevalier wished to speak.
"Not a word 1" cried the Count, Iu* a voice of
thunder. " You know me. understand) I hold your
life at my mercy, and a moment’s hesitation will bo
punished with death."
"1 obey," summered the Chevalier.
" In good time! Yonr 20,000 francs are in that
secroUry—Uke them!"
"Permit me to decline yonr offer."
An imperious gesture overruled the false modesty
which the Chevalier expressed feebly, and Uke a man
who declines for form's sake.
"Bat,” said he,"the secretary is locked.’
"Open it."
"There is no key in it."
"Break the lock,then."
"Wbatlyou wish meto—"
"Break the lock, or I'll shoot you."
The pistol was again presented, as an argument
which admitted no reply. Gaeton obeyed.
"It is well!" said the Count. "Take that package
of bank notes; they are yonrs. Have you a pocket
bonk?"
"Yea."
"What docs ijt contain?,'
"Some papers—letters addressed to me."
"Let yonr pocket book fall in front of tho socro*
lary^ou^have broken open."
"I must have proof which will convict you."
" But——"
"But, air, I moan to have all tbe evidences of a
burglary. I mean that tho robber shall bo known.
Robber or deatbl Choosel Abl yonr choice is

you are about to fly. You will go before me. I do
