McKenna. tf mayU Later from Kalians. , St* JMay 25.—Advices from Kansas state that the Cunimiltee of Safety in Lawrence had resolved not to resist the Marshal, but that the city had been evacuated. The Free Btate were collecting at Topeka, and would re- But if the threats against Lawrence were execut ed. The report, howover, that Lawrence had been destroyed by Are, has been confirmed by a dispatch received from Chicago. Tho Sheriff appeared before the town with an overwhelm ing force, made some arrests, and ashed for and received some arms, hut the (teople having re fused to surrender tho others, he cannonaded and burnt the town. General Pouteroy, and Messrs. Hunt and Reeder were supposed to bo in a place of safety. Governor Rohiuson was at Lecompton, and the people there threatened to hang him. It was reported that tho United States troops were anxious to protect tho set tlers, hut were not allowed to leave their tents. Fatal Affray—A difficulty occurred In R* Bell a, ! d his two sons, Johu A. aud Charles, and Drs. Troy and Hunter and Judge Bird were engaged. John R. aud Johu A. Bell were both instantiy killed by Judge Bird and Dr. Hunter; Dr. Troy was slightly injured on the arm by a stick in thehnnds of John A. Bell. Mu Rinttt u\* a Nkuro—Ry a private letter from Macon, we learn that Mr. James Stubbs, overseer on the Lee county plantation of Nathan Bass, of Macon, was killed the other day by a negro boy belonging to Mr. Bass. The boy had been quarreling with another, and Mr. 8. had the offender locked up in the smoke-house until he could make it convenient to correct him. A butcher knife bad beeu left in the smoke-house, and the negro managed to get hold of it, sever ed the cords that bouud him, and then placed himself at the door ready to use the knife when any one should enter. As Mr. Stubbs did this, the fellow stabbed him in the abdomen, causing death immediately.—Columbu* Knquinr, Laws and Journals—By a notice from tho Librarian, to be found elsewhere, it will be seen that the letting of tho contracts to catty the Laws and Journals will take place at the Cap!- tol on Tuesday the 24th day of June. In this connection, we would state that the printing of the Laws will be complete and they will be plac ed in the hands of tho binder this week. ’■Fed eral Union, t> More Indignation Meetings in Mahbaciiu- setts.—Boston, Mau 2.5—The largost meeting ever held In Faneulf Hall assembled there last evening for the expression «r its Indignation at the assault on Senator Soniner by Hon. Preston L. Brooks, of 8. C. , Gov. Gardinor presided, aided by 40 Vice- Presidents, Including tho most distinguished men of all parties. Gov. Gardiner characterized the assault us ex ceeding in grossness and brutality anything in the pages of history, and called upon :e pages of history, and called upon Congress to expel tbe assailant. His sentiments were responded to throughout by tramfadous cheering. Appropriate resolutions were adopted after speeches from gentlemen of all political parties, many of which were warm and defiant lu their tone, and drew forth tumultuous responses.
