PUBLIC MBKTING POSTPONED. We are authorized to say, that tho meeting called for to-night, and to which reference was made iu our morning edition, has been postpon ed until further notice. Meeting;* In Honor of Col. Brooks. Some gentlemen who concur in our views on this subject object to partisan character of the argument, in justice to ourselves we should say that we have no disposition whatever to give a political hearing to the question. We presented such considerations os seemed likely to Influence those whom we deemed it most im portant to address. Thinking it likely that the larger number of those moving iu the matter were Democrats, after urging some considerations beuring equal ly upon all, wo deemed it essential to make an appeal having special reference to our party friends. Wo trust that no further explanation on this point will l>e necessary. The contest nt Cincinnati. On the 13th ballot as published by us this morning, Buchanan had 160 votes, Pierce 78J Douglas C3 and Cass 5J. Making In all 300. But there is manifestly some mistake In these figures. The whole vote of the Convention in 1852, when South Carolina was not represented was 288. Add the delegation from that State, entitled to 8 votes, and we have 290 as the total vote of the Convention now in session. Two thirds of 290 is 197$ ; or in other words, it will require 198 votes to make a nomination— Granting then that Air. Buchanan received as re* potted 100, he required on the 13th ballot but 38 votes to give him the nomination. We do not speculation on the chances of his obtaining them as the balloting proceeded. Four years ago on the first ballot, Cass receiv- ed 110 votes, Buchanan 95, Douglas 20, Marcy 27, leuviug some fifteen or twenty scattering votes, 192 being uecessary to a choice, Gen* Cass, highest vote, which was the highest ob. talned by any cundidate but Gen. Pierce, was 131—given on the 35th ballot. First Fruits—An Example for lint tntlou, A kind friend in Thomas county, has sent us a list of fifteen subscribers, all from one post office, accompanied by the money. He will please accept our thanks. For sumo time past, aud es pecially siueu the utter failure of tho attack upon tbc Dominicans, tho Emperor Soulouquc has rnpjdly lost in popularity, at least in some parts nl me Island. Washington Correspondence. Outrage*—Result qf the Washington Election —President ini Prospect. Washington, June 3. 1 think It is in Bulwer’s novel of that the epidemic character of poculiar crimes Is alluded to. Within the past three years we have seen it illustrated in this country In the frequency of wife murder. We aroatthls moment, experi encing it in Washington, with respect to mur ders and assaults. While I write there Is a dense mass of human beings In the streets near my window. The “ Americans” were yesterday beaten at the ballot-box in the election for Muyor, by.a majority of thirteen; and they are to day animated with rosoutmeut, impelled by which ouo of their number, an hour or two ago, knocked down and stamped to death, an inof fensive Irishman, whom he did not eveu know. Meeting him In tho 'public thoroughfare upon the principal avenue, ho made the assault. The murderer was caught, uud taken before a mag istrate, where an uttompt. was promptly made to rescuo him by force. Tills falling, however, tiie attention of the police was soon convenient ly withdrawn from their prisioner, and he quietly retreated through the back door of tho magistrate's office, probably to bo heard of uo more iu Washington. When our laws were made, there was a horror of the crimes pros cribed. Now, crimes ure not crimes, uud when a mail is slaiu, thu public sympathy is evident for his slayer. Two years a ago u Kuow Nothing was elected Mayor over John W. Maury, one ot- the most populur men our city lias ever known, by a majority or 439. Yesterday, Mugruder was elected over Hill, tiie Know Nothing candidate by a majority of 13! The occupants of the Presidential mauslou, aud indeed the whole cubinet, uud the whole city, are giving almost exclusive heed to the mouosylibic uews, borne on the wires from the West. At this moment a political struggle Is anticipated. It is somewhat important, who shall be the nominee of the Cincinnati Conven tion, for Judge McLean, of Ohio, is likely to op* pose him. There are Democrats whom he can' not beut, and there are those whom he may beat' Never was unity, wisdom and forbear- ante more needed by a party. lap art:at,. meeting Iii Laurens. He does not believe that there are mauy.lfimy.lndiaiis nowin the Gulf Hammock. Ho says that the Indians have been hotly press ed, and that it is probable they havo not plant ed any provision crop this year. That Capt. Accounts from Cincinnati auto that the Commit tee on Credentials occupied tho entire afternoon and oveningor Tuesday, iu hearing the statements or the contesting delegates from New York. Hon. D. L. Boymour opened tbe discussion on the part of the Hards, and reviewed the history ofthe party Itor the last tweuty years to prove tho legitimacy or tbe “Hard” orgoulsaUou, attacking the “Bolts,” parti cularly some or those on the delegation, for their former delinquencies, and claimed that tho “Hards" were the only NaUonal Domoorats; and that the National Convention could recognise none otbor. Ex-Governor Boymour replied, comparing tho vote or Gen, Cass with tho vote ortho “Hard Shells” lost rail, and prosontod Tor the consideration ofthe committee a tabular statement showing that iu seventeen Congressional districts the “Hards” only got one fifth ortho Cass vote—ton thousand out of fifty thousand; and In six other districts where Cass gotten thousand votes tho “Hards” lost fall got on ly lsoo. Sheppard dosed ou thu part or tho “Soils,” uud chargod Mr. D. L. Seymour with voting against tho annexation. of Texas. He also alluded to u well known secret circular charging Mr. Seymuur with knowing oftta oxUtouco aud fail ing to expose it He, himself, bad made It public, and tho only man ou that circular now in activo po litical life was Mr. Townsoud, who was elected as the “Hurd” candidate for Governor of the Alms- bourn*. He showed that more “Softs” voted for the Nebraska bill than “Hards,” the nurnbor stand* ing seven to three, and or thoso three Gen. When tho argument was concluded, several mem bers of tho committao desired to make the dologu- tious pledge themselves to abide by the decision of tho committee and the Convention, but thu point was not pressed. When tho room was cleared Sonator Bayard, of Delaware, tbo chairman, proposed a report, stating that, whereas, in thu Stato or New York Iho Demo cratic party has divided into two sections, acting sometimes in concert and sometimos supporting soparute tickets; and where is, both sections stand now upon one platform; and, whereas, the commit tee on credentials are uuable to discover any differ ence in their principles, or to doclde which is tho regular organization, therefore Resolved, That the Convention be recommended to reject both, unless waving minor differences they get together lor the soke of union and harmony, and •elect from each delegation 36 members to repre sent them on the floor ofthe Convention. First Love.—A Fact.—Jeremy Dumps had arrived at a period of life when he thought a wife would be quite a conve nient acquisition to his household. Ac cordingly he made some inquiries among his friends who would be a suitable person for him. “Alice Dradshaw will make you a good wife,” said a neighbor. “Well I’ll take a look nt her,” said Jeremy, os if he was about to view a piece of land or a horse. Pursuant to this, he mounted his pony and rodo straightway to the door ofthe dumscl whom he had never seen. He knocked, she appeared at the door, after tho usual salutation he remarked. “I wonder if you’re the gal what’s been re commended to me ? if you be, jest say so, and I’ll come in, and stay all night with you."—Dedham Adv. Congressional.—Washington, June f. The i louse met to day aud adjourned. floor. . Mr. John A. Goorgo, of Now Hampshire, for the ieke or harmony, was willing to admit a portion of both delegations—the representation to be founded on the vote fur the reapoctlve sections as cost last fall. Mr. Wright, of Pennsylvania, favored the propo sition of tho chairman. Another member made a proposition to take the Congressional vote of the two sections as a basis. Mr. Stevenson, or Kentucky, thought It was neces sary to settle this difference now. Although ho sympathized with the “Hards,” he regarded the “Softs” as. the regular delegation. Ho was at Balti more eight year* ago. when tbo samo question was raised. The “Hards” then claimed an organization ou less grounds than the “Sorts” claim uow. Be sides, the “Hards” bad shamelessly abused Frauk- Un Pierce, and made their address the basis of abuse of the most sacredly constitutional administration ever known. He was willing, however, to agroe to allow tbe representation In the Convention Ut he on tbe basifi or the voto or last Tall. Mr. Wiggins, of Malno, denounced the abolition ism of tbe “Softs.” Their praise of the present nd ministration was no proor they woro not abolition ists, for Mr. llerco had been os favorable to the ab olitionists in some of his acts as to tiie South lu othors. Mr. Gcnrgo, of New Hampshire, would notBtaud by and bear the glorious administration of Presi dent Pierce abuRod in that committee. Mr. Wiggins would not bo brow-hoaten. Ho would stand to the Convoutlou ready to denounce Mr. Pierce aud prove that in his apolntments ho bad en deavored to uourisb Abolitionism. It was not fair to admit tho delegates on the basis of a vote gained on a Free Soil platform, Ho wont for tho admission Of tho Hards, Mr. Whitney, of Massachusetts, thought that no modo was equitable but an admisslou ou tbo husls of tho popular veto. Mr. Tilford, or Indiana, was willing to take tho re sponsibility or lottiug iu tho ‘Hurds,” for ho looked on the “Softs” as rotten Abolitionist? at heurt. Ho had heard John Van Buron dcclaro lu the streets of this city tbut the administration of Polk was as cor rupt as A—II. Ho was willlug thou to voto for tho admlssiou of tho “ Hards,” but would niako a con cession aud admit hair of each delegation. Fur ther couccssJuu bo never would make, so help him God. Aftorfurthor somewhat angry discussions the Com* milteo adjourned till 9 o’clock, to-morrow morning without tuking a voto.
