Washington, Juno U* Tho support, though qualified, given by Mr. Seward to Mr. Crittenden’s resolution, has hurt It badly; not that any Senator has knowingly and wilfully taken his position with reference to that of Mr. Seward, hut, however unconscious ly to each one, that influence Is felt. Mr. Beward belongs to tho minority and to tho party ao eased of the perpetration of wrong against the general government. Ho should therefore have been tho last to propose measures of concilia tion, which can only come with grace from the stronger party. Ho has marred Mr. Critten den’s effort and his own reputation for sagacity. The dobato was continued to-day, and Mr. Crittenden spoke most eloquently, as did Messrs. Clay ton and Bell on his side also, but Messrs. Brown, Yutee, Toucy, Mallory and Stuart, arose in firm opposition to tlm movement; and they seemed wisely determined to leave to the 1* resident’s own discretion tho propriety of send ing General Scott, or whomsoever he may please, to Kansas, to pacify or subdue the re bellious spirits there. The House is not yet at work. Mr. Houston, of Alabama, who has been absent for many weeks, on account of tho decease or his lament ed wife, and Mr.Dunn, of Indiana, whoi<> fail- log health caused him to leave directly after the organization of the House, are both In their places again. The latter is very frail, however, and does not expect to live long, believing that pulmonary consumption is the affection with which he Is wasting. Tho telegraph yesterday conveyed to you startling accounts from Kansas; but hero we believe no telegraphic reports from that quar ter. Impartial. THE FIRST 4VAMIRL, MY ALICE U. It would seem, awakcued opposition fr* it both In the Sourh and the North. But perhaps we wrong Senators Toncy, Stuart, Brown and Yulee, in supposing that their opposition is in any wise attributable to Mr. Seward’s support. And though Mr. Critteudcn’s resolution at first struok us favorably, wc have to confess, on further cous;J. r.'.li;n, that wo know nothing in the character of Geul Scott to designate him for this service. As h mflituryiclnoflain ho fins merits of a very high order. But if we may Judge his qualifications for civil sorvico by the manner in which ho conducted tho political campaign when a candidate for the Presidency, we cannot estimate them very highly. How ever wo are willing to lean? the questinu for tho determination of the President. That tho Government needs a fetioug force iu Kansas for the maintenance of order and tho enforcement of law, is quite apparent. Tho freesoilers there have set the existing authori ties at defiance. They arc in rebellion against laws of admitted constitutionality. Most of the Northern states are furnishing them with mu nitions of war and stimulating them to the ibedding of blood. Recruits are flocking to their rebellions standard. Civil strife is raging throughout the territory. This state of things imperatively demands the intervention of such a United Stales force a* will compel submission on the part of those arrayed against the consti tutional authorities. Laws must be enforced until repealed or pronounced void by the legal tribunals—or the bloody conflict uow raging in that territory will very aoflu extend itself to the adjoining states. I We trust that timely uud energetic action on the part of the executive* will compel tho disaffected Into obedience, and bring order out of confusion. The Spanish Press on the Intervention Jtnj Na poleon III. in Spanish AJ/airs—Uni, Dodge and the Beau Monde—Freedom of the Press —Barcelona Disturbed -Case qf the Taint- tina—Husso-Spanish Prize to the French. Fpoeinl Correspondence of tho N. Y. Daily TUuus. Paris, Timidity, May 1.1,185G. The spirit of the Spanish press, and, iudecd, of tho Spanish uatimi, iu view of the threaten ing language employed by the. official press of Paris about their affairs, can best be judged by the articles of tho newspapers themselves. I translate some of them—uot the most fiercely writtcu—but such as uppear to represent mast calmly and dispassionately the true sentiments of the Spanish people. It must be premised that a French newspaper, maintained by Louis Napoleon ut Madrid, called the Journal of Mad- -*- 1 has been tuning its small pipe in unison rid, with tho famous article of the Constitutlonnel ever since that pulse-feel..• uppeaved. The Sovereignty, democratic journal, under data of the 9th hist., utter publishing something on this subject every day for a considerable time past, brings out the following article: “ Tho Constitutionitcl of Paris, as our readers already know, wrote an article on our affairs with that self-sufficient and authoritative tone, that luxury of haughty and humiliating phras es, which the French journals are prone to em ploy In their strange appreciations of this nldo the Pyrenees. Somo thought the article inspired by tho spir it oftho Spanish refugees. Some, that it was the faithful representation of the Bonapartist idea—some, that it wasliu more than au over weening expression of Frouch vanity, intoxicat ed by tho late successes of their diplomacy. Wo eavo tho field open to .suppositions; but it would bo pleasing to us at least to repel the idea that there enu be any Spaniard so abject as to har bor in ills bosom the vile thought of aspersing tho glories of his country. It would bo to abdi cato all dignity; it would bo tho dopth of baser ness, and the Spauiara has always shown hint self jealous of his honor—proud of Id* Immor tal traditions. No; there 6 no Spaniard who , “ It la oertuiuly very disagreeable to lovo uuother so much.” Tills origlual remark was uttered u3 a stage soliloquy, the little dressing or lit- ing-room having no other occupant than the very pretty woman who laid down her book with a yawn, and took up her tidy in crochet, lazily netting a few stitches. To one who had never suffered from tbis excess of Idolatry, it might be consid ered rather a singular complaint: but tho case stood thus : Flora Hastings had beeu a wife tho wry long time of three months and a-half. Hot wardrobe and house be ing in complete order, her husband very much at leisure in business and witli am ple means, they had Ibund nothing better to do than tho modern aud very selfish oc cupation of “living for each other.” That is, they had declined all party invitations after the first gloss of the bridal dress was dimmed, and when seen at. all iu public, wove always together, she leaning upon his arm with an enviable air of self-satis faction, looking up into his face with a most adoring glance whenever he chanced to speak, mid he in turn bending down to catch her most trivial remark with a de votion that would have become a Just-en gaged lover. If at a concert, he fanned her, he supported her opera-glass, he car ried her hood and shawl. But even music, in which they both professed to be ama teurs, seemed to have lost its accustomed charm, aud they wore certaiu to leave at the end of part first, no matter what .were the attractions of tho bill to less absorbed spectators. in short, every hotly said—and every body, when turned gossip, is not over civil or complimentary often-times—that “they were making fools of themselves, and it could not last for ever.” Some people are so envious of anything in which they do not share! They did not live iu the city iu the sum mer season, bot at Mr. Hasting’a a little country house—-large enough, however, to be thoroughly comtortablo and well-fitted, and with a head servant who never both ered her mistress by asking instructions, which were sure to be comprehended in one Bcntcnuo, “You know best, Margaret.” So they lived an idle, fond, and, as they imagined, a perfectly lmppy life, with flowers which the gardener cultivated, a little music, and the new books oftho Benson. They did not invite any company to Brookside; they did uot wish any. Mr. Hastings rode to town between nine and ten, returning by three, and from that time they were constantly together, read ing, warning or driving m the low car riage, ouu of their latu acquisitions. At first they thought it delightful to sit together on the veranda, Mr. Hustings enjoying his after-dinner cigar and the newspaper, Flora with the last new noval and exquisite silver paper-cutter, that had been one, ot tho engagement presents, But they did not $et on very well, there absorbed, sat down on the little sewing ^band, nud, never before slfide their mnr- chi'tr, and, finished the excftitfgf scene. It Is not quite certain, after all, that Mr. Dix on, whose election was reported some time since as successor to Mr. Toucy, will ever get into the United States Senate. From tho I luston Conner vre learn that his election was the result “of u bargain made w.th the friend)- of Charles J. It was luid on tho table, and a motion to reconsider the vote electing James Dixon U..States Senator was pass- [ foreheadoi Spaniards, in payment, doubtless. i for tin* hospitality which has been extended to But the acts of the Journal are logical. U Dry. rnen wo sewing c the work-uniUet took their ]>mee outside the cjiscinctit window, and Flora, with the prettiest »ud most becoming air of in dustry, listened to Mr. Hastings, who sat ‘" i his feet supported at a considerable roll , dld notreeollcctuntil tlieO tho strict agree ment they had entered in not to read this particular book separately i but a chapter or two could make no possible difference, she thotight,‘walking up and down the gar den path, and Itatcnlngto every sound. It was fall au hour beyond the usuul time. What could have happened? That horie, she was 9ure, was not to be trusted, aud going so near the railroad especially. Oh, how dreadful it would be if lie were brought homo dead, or very much injured! How horrible to watch him suffer painl And then he was obliged to go down to those dreadful wharves. , Oh, if he was anything but a shipping merchant! She was kept ill such constant fear of smnll- >ox or typhus fever, or some other sliock- ug disease, all so prevalent this season. He must.be ill: yes ho had complained ol a headache in the morning. If he did not come in another quarter of an hour, she would certainly go to town in the evening train in search of him. And then she imagined herself driving about in a fear ful haste-in a very desolate-looking cab, so inGuitely wretched that the tears came into her" eyes at the very thought. Imagine her joy, then, at the sound of horses'feet, just as this frantic resolution was taken: nnd she • flew down to the gate to meet Alfred just os lie dis mounted to open it, receiving ns a reward for all her anxieties n shower of kisses and loving epithets, with fond chidings for her unreasonable fears for his safety. She forgot to inquire for the headache. “Ob, what a warm, disagreeable, un comfortable day it had been! If people could only live without eating such days!" Aud yet the two managed to make a very comfortable diuuer, in spite of heat and romance, with a plentiful dessert of strawberries nnd cream. It was Inter than tbeir ordinary hour, so much so that it was nearly dark by the time Alfred’s cigar w«s finished. Flora thought tliut he wus much longer than usual in smoking, and discovered, with somo impatience, tiiul lie had indulged himself in n second; a rather unusual nnd selfish proceeding, she thought, considering ho was so very late, which, by the way, was not yet ac counted for. The ‘-anger’ lmd managed to work herself into a slight nervous fever, with the heat uud ultcrnoon’s restlessness. It even seemed possible, for the instant, that “the king could do wrong." How ever, the pouting lip was kissed into ils full l-oundneHs again, us the unconscious offender proposed an adjournment to the dressing-room, -and lights. "Don't jou think it rather mo warm, dearest?" was tho mild expostulation ol the husband, ns Flora prepared to make his knee her onsy-clinir, as usual. Her watch, again nml aguin consulted, was held for at least three-quarters of uu hour inherhuud, tho moments creeping by, and still Albert lmd not come. Sim could not resist reading on a few pages, still leaning over, the raping of the veranda, and then, more 'inioir hot-, forelicudi or the whispered Mens lug, their lost .parting word. Bho would dozo a few minutes, nnd then go to him perhaps, she thought; lie surely would not think ofsleeoing so, She was very tired, and it was Very warm; and then one white round urtn was thrown over the fair- linen sheet, and with flushed cheek, aud lips slightly apart, the littlo lady forgot her ill temper aud vexation together. She woke from an unhappy dream with a feverish start, a moment after, as she thought at first. But tho rooms were quite dark, nnd there was no liound but u monotonous ticking of the watch under die pillow. A rush of recollection suc ceeded the troubled waking, and she put out her arms to bosure she was not dreaming still—that it was really so lute. Her husband’s pillow was empty! She thought of tho lounge by. the window in the dressing-room; he certainly could not intend lo sleep there, away from her, all night! A grieved, sorrowful feeling took the place of the first resentful thoughts; and thou pride cume back again, as a sound from the next room confirmed her suspicions. It was her husband turning restlessly upon the lounge, with a loug, sobbing sigh, us if even in his sleep he felt their estrangement. The first impulse, to go to him, to kneel down and wind her arms around him, and ask his forgiveness, was resisted, it was certainly unkind in him to go to sleep without kissing her gond-night; she should have wakened if he had. uuu then il would have been all right. A long, rolling crash of thunder broke in upon her reverie; the glare of lightning winch accompanied il revealed tlie lounge und its occupant; nnd then name u deluge of rain, and she heard the wind heating down tlie shrubbery before the window. Tho casements wero both open, tho rain came drenching iu upon tho new Brussels carpet, the hooks upon the ceutre-tublc, Iter work-basket; nnd there was Alfred, for whose hcull It site had been so anxious, ex posed to tlie wind und dampness. Should sliego nud close the casement? No! that might wulten him, ami he would think she lmd given up to him, besides, she shrank from crossing the rooms at midnight, lighted only by those lurid flashes in the black, angry heavens. Poor, wretched little wife miserable indeed in herself torture, lying upon her “widowed mar riage pillow," und listening with straining ears to the crush of tlie storm without, uud the heavy breathing of the sleeper near her! Harder than nil to bear wus the up braiding conscience, und the dreary lone liness ot the empty room. But, with all tills, slit:sank again into a disturbed, un quiet sleep; und when site woke again, the cold, sickly daylight was stealing through the room. At first she could scarcely recollect what hud happened; but, us she sat up leaning upon her elbow, she saw Iter ornaments thrown in confusion upon tlie (aide her dress upon tlie carpet, Alfred's deserted pillow, with the smooth fold of the litieu undisturbed, nud there lie was'lying, breathing so heavily that her fears over came her sell-will, and site called him to her side.
