The public in general, and our Democratic

such opjy-'ucnHion.
i.Ssured then that tho Southern electoral voto
will bo cast unanimously for Buchanan, we do
not regret—we rather rejoice nt Mr. Fillmore’s
candidacy. He will probably draw oil* enough
“American" and Whig votes from Fremont to
doprivo him of several Northern States, which
but for Mr. Fillmore, tho Black Republican*
might carry. Now York, is. wo Jrelicvc, ono
of these. Indiana perhaps another. Dimu, n
frcc-soil Congressman from that Slate, of great
influence, having come out in Fillmore’s favor.
Under tbeso circumstances Mr. Fillmore is
doing a good work iu consenting to lie a candi
date. It Is therefore with extreme reluctance
that we have been forced, by tho virulence of
our opponents, to say might in his disparage*
meat. Confident thut tho South is too wise n/t
to give her wholeclcctoral vote for Buchanau,
not as sectional but as a Union candidate, wc
are perfectly willing that the Americans may;
wherever in tho North they have not been
swallowed up by the Black Republicans, make
as strong a fight os they can against the latter.
And if Mr. Fillmore shall be the means of giv
ing Buchannu the support of three or four
doubtful Northern States, wc shall consider him
entitled rather to our praise than censure.
A Grand Gathering Iu Indiana.
One of tho largest and most enthusiastic po_
Utica! gatherings ever witnessed in the North
west was present at Indianapolis last week—a
few days after the great Black Republican mass
meeting at the same place.
The ludiauapolis Sentinel thus dose riles the
closing scenes :
We now come to tho closing scenes of tho
graud gala day of tho Democracy, aud hero we
leel that language is inadequate to convey a
true picture of the sublimity and grandeur by
which they wore characterized. Tho torch
light procession was the monster affair ot tho
season—the largest procession ever witnessed
in this city or Stato. The universal opinion is
among those capable of giving an opinion, not
wholly based by party prejudice, thut there
could not have been loss than five to six thou
sand in the moving mass of human beings.
It was, at least, one-third larger than the
.•Temout procession of Tuesday. As the pro
cession came out into Washington street the
display of fire works was commenced from the
roofsofthe Rates House and Palmer House and
blocks opposite, aud followed the marching
column of torches iu its progress at Washing
ton street. This principal avenue of our city
was made perfectly brilliant throughout its en
tire length, with toreli-lights, fireworks and
bonfires, it was one of thegraudest spectacles
we ever witnessed, and was greeted with tho
most overwhelming bursts ol joy and enthus
iasm. The welkin rung again with shouts for
Bucliar.au, Breckinridge and Democracy. The
cry was caught up by the masses who lined
both sides of Wosnington-street for nearly a
mile, and sent back again in joyous response.
“ Wc can conceive it to be scarcely possible for
the spirit of enthusiasm to run higher Ilian it
did on tho night of the memorable 17th in In

Sugars.—Tho continuous upwurd movement
in sugar lias been a subject of general com
plaint among families ami consumers, aud the
sugar trade is now ut an unsatisfactory posi
tion. The short crop of LonsUma sugars have
set tho wits of specuhiliors to work, uml a great
many purchases of foreign sugars have been
made on New Orleans as well us New York ac
count, to hold for a higher range of prices,
though prices are very high already. The
trade is, consequently, only supplied from baud
to mouth for immediate consumption*, yet
there have been largo und regular arrivals of
sugar from the Spanish und British West In
dies. The stock of hogshead sugar iu New
Yoik nt the close ol last week, tho Post is in
formed, was Go,000 hogsheads. This shows no
scarcity of foreign sugars, if it were oil the
market. The deficiency iu the receipts from
all points since the 1st of January is very large
though the increasing importations are rapid
ly making it up, the high prices attracting sup
plies from t lie British west Indies. The de
mand has been contracted iu consequence of
the high prices nml consumption is rather on
the decrease, so that, as that journal is inform

appears to lie determined upon in tin* minds of
members*
Immediately uftor the nomination of Mr*
Fremont, Mr. Burlingame, of Massachusetts,
delivered a very pungent speech in denuncia
tion ol Mr. Brooks’s assault on Mr. Sumner,
subsequently to prevent harshness und trouble,
as they allcdgcu. Mr. Boyce and others request
ed M r. Burlhiguuio to explain away any inten
tional personal affront to Mr. Brooks—stating
however, that they did w> of their own accord.
Mr. Burlingame complied orally, ami Mr.
Banks made a memorandum of his oxidation,
which you seen appended to Mr. Brooks’
speech. This morning (Mr. Brooks having
gone Carolina ward,) Mr. Burlingame pub
lished the following card :
A CARD.
I mu informed that the Memorandum of u
conversation of myself and friends and tho
friends of Mr. Brooks lias received, iu some
quarters, from its position, us appended to Mr.
Brooks’ speech, an interpretation which does
injustice to its real meaning and to my inten
tions.
Tills is what I say, and have said, in relation
to my speech : Tlmt 1 observed iu it the rules
of personal and parliamentary decorum ; that
I could not qualify or retract any portion of it,
ami held myself responsible to any gentleman
aggrieved by it.
This is tho only construction which 1 sup
posed would be placed upon tho memorandum,
which my friends reduced to writing, that there
might be no misunderstanding. But, iimsmuch
ns attempts, not altogether unsuccessful, have
been made to pervert its true meauing, 1 now
withdraw it. And, thut there may not be any
misapprehension iu the future, 1 say, explicitly,
tlmt 1 leave my speech to interpret Itself, und
hold myself responsible for it, without qualifi
cation or amendment.

Washington, July 10, 1856.
Wlmt will come of this, God only knows.
We are weary here of wrangling and violence:
yet it is generally wished that Mr. Burlingame
Jiu4 published his card before Mr. Brooks’ de
parture, or not at all. The “memorandum*'
was a Horry ntllilr. The circumstances connect
ed with this curd render it still inure so. Mr.
Banks uo doubt thought ho was adroit in pen
ning the first; but what can bi* said of the
friendship of u man who would for quietness’
sake put one iu Mich an abject position!
II was strange that tlinSenute having on its

ed iu the House, that, that body will not touch

j&Tlie return of Padre Vijil to Nicaragua has
been noted. He came and was rccoguised as
a minister, und then quietly returned, to the
astonishment of every one, for the presence
here of such an agent was important. But it
is stated by persons usually well informed in
Mich matters, that Father Vijil (nronanneeri

certain high ami inlluential ecclesiastics in this
city and m Baltimore, anil tlmt he returned to
his country for tho purpose of reconciling the
ecclesiastics and laity to the papal authority,
which they smuotiino since set at nought. He
appeared to be a serious aud good mail, and
little skilled in the diplomacy of politics, how
ever familiar lie may bo with the affairs of tho
church. Major Hoiss, is, I believe, the deposi
tory of the actions of his legation. The posi
tion the good padre luis vacated will he more

Later.—The Benato has passed a bill appro

porenssioning” the old muskets of the United
States; and it is believed that several improve
ment bills (which will be vetoed and then
passed over the veto, it may be,) will be dis
posed of before the adjournment. The House
has had some nciion oil the adjournment ques
tion, which cunllrms w.hnt has been suggested

July 21.—Additional.—The house has had
an exciting time over the adjournment question,
each Jpurty accusing tho others of flrttering
away the time that has past. Messrs. Camp
